BioShock Creator Compares Videogame Sex to Naked Puppets

Digital love scenes are more "Team America" than "Black Swan," says Irrational's creative director.

BioShock creator Ken Levine thinks that videogames have a long way to go before they get sex right. He says that developers haven't quite grasped what it is they're doing when it comes to sex - at least in the games they make - and that at the moment, it's tantamount to taking the clothes off puppets.

He compared the current state of videogame love making to the sex scene in the movie Team America, where the male and female lead - both of whom are marionettes - engage in what is ostensibly a wild night of passion, but to the audience is a ridiculous, and rather amusing, display of puppets knocking boots. "I think it's not about being interactive," Levine said. "I think it's more about people not understanding what it is." He said that even something as relatively simple as nudity fell flat, because developers were still essentially dealing with Barbie and Ken's digital counterparts.

He also felt that there was a certain amount of prudishness about videogames that was standing in the way of things getting better. "The fact [videogame sex is] even controversial says that the perception of the industry is that we're making toys or something, as opposed to making creative expressions for a range of audiences - including adults." He didn't think that this prudishness wasn't just limited to those outside the industry either; Levine said that during an interview someone had commented on the amount of bad language he used. He didn't intend to change the way he spoke however, saying, "If I'm going to drop an F-bomb, I'm going to drop an F-bomb. I'm a big boy and I get to do that. It's one of the privileges of being an adult."

If videogames are ever to tell a broad range of mature stories, the industry is going to have to get over that prudishness, because sex is a pretty important part of life. Some developers are less prudish than others, of course. BioWare, for example, has included romantic subplots in its games for years, and while you'd be hard pressed to say that the sex scenes in Dragon Age or Mass Effect are all that great, they do get a little bit better each time. There's still a long way to go, both for BioWare, and the industry as whole, but these are important first steps.

I don't know about getting better every time. From where I stand ME1 had the best scenes in both taste and character interaction.

Getting better each time?

HAVE YOU SEEN DA2'S SCENES?

Anyway, I highly doubt we need to worry about sex scenes in Bioshock Infinite. Despite the male/female protagonist team.

And include more and more clothes each time...

On the subject, I still have yet to see a game where a sex scene is needed or even makes the game better than it would have been without it.

Anyone else find it h i l a r i o u s that people care so much about the sex-scenes?
Take Gears of War, or CoD. Add some RP elements to both, and a sex-scene with some frontal nudity. The press would go wild and it would be a controversy-storm.

Yet, in both Gears of War, and CoD, basically the only thing you do is shoot aliens/people until your arms fall off. Then you pause, take a breath, reload, and shoot some more.

Graphic violence = Okey.
Sex = AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHSOMEONEPLEASETHINKOFTHECHILDREN!

(And yes, I know media etc are concerned with the violence in games, but never as much as with the sex. Same goes for Hollywood movies).

Its not about the sex necessarily. I mean, grow up. If you really just want to see RPG characters having sex watch a Japanese Hentai movie. Whatever.

I always thought it was more about the relationships and the "implied sex" as in Mass Effect that counted more. The "thrill of the hunt" as it were. Pursuing a potential mate for a relationship. That's more exciting than the sex.

Yeah, you know, I gotta say I'm a little surprised that it seems like the one game that is upfront about its sexual content is Duke Nukem. Are we are more comfortable with it when its presented in a misogynistic fashion? Maybe not a terribly good example as that game can probably be considered in the realm of parody, but still.

My problem is more the fact that they just don't look convincing. Maybe now that "performance capture" is getting much better. Hey Heavy Rain dudes, up to the challenge of making a convincing video game sex scene? :) I'd settle for some shots that don't show you that much, but heavily imply what's going on and leave the rest to the player's imagination. They do it that way in films all the time when they want to maintain a PG rating or whatever. You know, girl drags guy into bedroom and shuts the door, fade to black. Everybody knows what's going on; they can fill in the blanks. I agree that just the simple fact that dealing with sex at all is controversial in games needs to be addressed. My issue is more in how it's presented, but that's always been part of the technical limitations of the medium at the time. We've all seen badly acted and poorly convincing sex scenes in terrible movies too, after all.

I used to be one of the biggest fans of Ken Levine, way back when Bioshock was undoubtedly my favorite game, (which was pretty early on into my gamin career) then he sold out to make Bioshock Infinite, (a piece of - ok fine i'm not going to go into that) But now with actions like this he is starting to slowly- but surely win me back over.

Just curious what is so bad about Bioshock Infinite? Since it's not even out yet.

On Topic: I do agree that there is a unfair perception that video games are still "just kids toys" and that does get in the way of storytelling.

Gives new meaning to "cover-based shooter."

And it all went downhill with the ME2 scenes being awkward. If you're gonna do something special, do it right.

While the sex scenes in ME1 were intimate and felt more mature than.....well......dry humping as was the case in Miranda's scene in ME2, Tali's scene from the same game was done perfectly, I thought. It wasn't sexualiased at all, but still felt WAY more romantic and intimate. I've heard that Jack's scene is pretty good too, but I haven't seen it so I can't say.

Really Bioware sex scenes get better?
Because the way I enjoy sex is by progressively leaving more and more of my cloths on.

I think the major problem with video game sex is the exact same problem that cut scenes have had sense the dawn of gaming. The characters can't actually touch each other. because of motion capture or graphical limitations two people making physical contact of any kind will always look off.

At least someone bothered to create a 'modified' sex scene for DA:O. Ok, it was more porno than intimate sex, but it was slightly better than the usual crap > . >

But personally, unless it's a character driven story, sex scenes are useless, unless Doctor Ned and Claptrap were getting intimate behind our back, and we could care less in that situation. > . >

And presumably that would also come with the maturity to know when it's appropriate to drop an "F-bomb" and when it isn't.

Anyway, I think the developers need to go with the Alfred Hitchcock approach and show as little as possible in regards to the "love" scenes (I use the word "love" extremely loosely). I say this because a) uncanny valley and b) there's a hell of a lot more intrigue involved the less you're able to actually see. It's why Tali Zora is such a popular character, and why Psycho is regarded so highly among classic horror fans.
