...I gotta be honest that's one of the dumbest things I've seen in a long time. How do they think putting Rapture on fucking clouds and blimps is a good idea in any way? And all of the horror element is lost once everything is bright and you can see all that's going on.

I'm convinced that Irrational games all lucked out on the first Bioshock (it was really damn good) but then didn't know what to do with the series so they turned the intense novel-esque shooter into a bland action shooter. They're sorta like the MGMT of developers. And now they think it's a GOOD idea to turn their shit around completely? It barely resembles Bioshock anymore, it's like if a FPS RPG that took place in Modern Day came out and was called The Elder Scrolls V.

Maybe some people like this sort of stuff, in case you couldn't tell I don't. But whatever it's their game and they can run it in to the ground any way they like

So apparently the big daddy dive suits have been around alot longer than rapture so rapture might not even be the only underwater city in the world, and i wonder if we will be seeing other characters like Fontaine in this one pulling off one of his scams

Given the extremely obvious "mocking-America" propaganda going on there, I hope Irrational doesn't end up bludgeoning us over the head too much with their "meaning" of the game. Subtlety and atmosphere are a good thing. Also, I too would like to see the name changed. In the Shock line, "System" stood for SHODAN and outer space, "Bio" stood for Rapture and underwater stuff and Big Daddies. We need a new name for this kind of thing. I also hope they can pull off something atmospheric with their non-impersonal main character and so forth.

Also--
You do know that System Shock 2 was a flop right?

As good and highly praised as it was no one bought it, and only later did it become a cult classic.

One huge reason is that Looking Glass (then Irrational) had this problem where they made good games that got drowned out by other games. System Shock 1 got owned by Doom, I believe it was. System Shock 2 got buried by Half-Life. Such is likely why no one bought it, despite its quality.

Dude, no it's not. It has fuck all to do with the punk movement. Nothing to do with it. Nothing. NOTHING!

It's retro future. Pure and simple.

Actually I think you never read a Steampunk story in your life. Go read Perdido Street Station and come back saying what was the punk counter culture in that book.

P.S:Wild Cards is horrible.

Everyone's opinion on differant series is going to vary. "Wild Cards" is perhaps my favorite work of the deconstructionist super hero movement.

That said, again, your talking about things that use the label incorrectly. I've read many things that have called themselves "Steampunk" and are not, which is exactly why it irritates me. You can say "hey this work of fiction is calling itself, or being called Steampunk, and it involves no elements of punk at all!", that doesn't make your point at all because it's exactly what I'm talking about. "Girl Genius" is another example of the same exact thing.

Retro-Future and Steampunk are differant things which is why the terms are differant. Alternative History is another genere that also gets mixed into this a lot as well, alternative history being stories about what might have been if say aliens had crashed in the middle of Poland right before World War II started, or if time travellers gave the confederate army modern weapons during the civil war. Occasionally these works go far enough where you see things similar to the retro-future or steampunk generes show up if they deal with things based around a current, more advanced technology they have a partial understanding of, spliced with older tech. Basically improvising based on old technology to use a new one they have no basis for. That isn't either Retro-Future or Steampunk either. I admit though that I am still waiting for someone to try and claim Harry Turtledove is a steampunk author. :p

I understand a lot of people want to defend the whole "Steampunk" label because it sounds cool, and reflects that on something they happen to like. That does not change that it's inaccurate however. They didn't just tag the "punk" onto the end for the sheer heck of it. The term came about in order to differentiate the genere (which never produced much) from "Retro Future" concepts which existed even then.

My curiousity is piqued...

Im looking forward to hearing more from this. And as a side note, I think it's awesome to see them use a Pinkerton agent, you barely ever hear use of these guys in anything.

They really should have named it Skyoshock or something.
The name Bioshock has no real meaning.

I wonder why they REALLY needed to keep the whole big daddy thing going though?

Edit: Does anyone else feel like this game is basically taking place in the Myst universe?

I think it looks great! Sure it's not the best name, and one can question why it's called BioShock, since it apparently has next to nothing to do with the other two, but if you read the synopsis on the site, it does hint at some form of gene-altering aspect of the game. And if that's true, then the name BioShock fits, just like it did with the first one.

It was called Bioshock because it was a spiritual successor to the System Shock series which took place on a space ship and had a rogue AI (Shodan) hence the System Shock name worked.

Bioshock took place underwater, so I guess the Bio tag kind of worked, but the shock didn't really.

Now the name just makes no fucking sense as it takes place in the damn sky.

I know it's the spiritual successor to System Shock, I'm just saying if you break down the name BioShock, you get Bio and Shock. And because of the plasmids it was a literal Bio-Shock. At least that's how I think of it.

It basically looks like what Bioshock would've looked like if it was Steampunk. Still, it looks good.
Bioshock is not steampunk?
What I meant by that is that Bioshock Infinite looks like Bioshock with a Steampunk makeover. I never once said Bioshock 1&2 were Steampunk.
I think his point is that Bioshock already was steampunk.
Ah, right sorry.

Yes, yes. the Bio prefix could be reffering to life in general. And plasmids, or just the story, could be a shock to your biology.
But yes, soo glad irrational is making another bioshock, and that it isn't set in rapture (lest Columbia eventually sinks, which'd be cool). Didn't play Bioshock 2 because, shit, the story was done in bioshock one. I won't nomially vote for crap sequels like that.

Flying Cities?

Victorian-ess Clothing?

Propaganda plastered on sides of buildings?

I am impressed...and slightly aroused.

how does bioshock make sense with it being underwater it would be hydroshock or aquashock, bioshock is to do with it being biologically based power ups via plasmids rather than the cybernetic upgrades in systemshock so presumably this will also use bio based powers

Really?

Do we need a knew Bioshock game after Bioshock 2...

I suppose I'll have to wait and see but I haven't much faith...

you do realize they might as well have not called this bioshock, it doesn't even take place in the same time frame, its not a sequel and it doesn't have much (if anything at all) to do with rapture..
Yes if you see my later posts where I actually get a chance to watch the trailer properly and all the way through, I ask why they bothered naming it Bioshock.

Why not come up with something new and original, like Aeroshock... or Big Daddies In Space.
at the time I decided to make the post, you had only posted what I had quoted,

No you were off by about 9 hours.
