it was creepy only so long as I had to worry about ammo and money, namely the first two or three levels. after that I pretty much had enough money to buy enough ammo and health to steam roll anything that wasn't a big daddy. that said there were some scary parts. I'm looking at you goons playing dead

I'm with you on scary games. As a youngin', I witnessed the really old, old game called Alone in the Dark... or is that the old Nickelodeon show? No, that's Are You Afraid of the Dark? Anyhow, tangents aside, I can't play horror games. Dead Space, no thanks... Resident Evil, never. Bioshock, however, was a great game. I played through it and had a grand time (though it was on easy). The story is great, there are some freaky moments, but there's nothing "scary" about the whole thing (unless you were to play on a harder mode and invested emotions into the character). There is, as another said, quite some unease throughout the entire game because everyone in Rapture is just plain insane; however, you can't be too scared by a game in which enemies will sing "Jesus loves me / this I know / for the Bible tells me so."

Go for it. I'd say it's worth the 5 bucks and just play on easy to remove the "I'm going to die" fear. Because, unless you start trying to control your character by repeatedly bashing your skull into the keyboard and hoping everything around you dies, you'll be fine.

From what I can tell from the Demo. Its eerie, but never spooky.

If that makes any sense
The full game is fucking creepy. And it's not just jump-out scares. The suspense gets to you. But, as Not a Spy said, all it does is startle you when you realize that you can kill anything. I think my video pretty much sums up my points:

It was scary at first.
But then, I realized I could kill anything with the shotgun and it stopped being scary.
I will admit.
Their were a couple sections that scared me to an extent.

Some parts of it are scary, but the tip is to just keep moving. If you turn it into an action game in your mind, and don't go all sneaky ninja (it doesn't help until you get chameleon), you probably won't get scared.

Bioshock thrives off it's atmosphere. You really feel the game. That's why it is really creepy at times. I was never absolutely petrified from it, but there definitely are some creepy moments.

The worst I can think of is when you are walking down that alley half filled with water and you see the shadow of a splicer in the room you are walking to, then the lights go out and he disappears. That scared me the most throughout the whole game.

Edit: And it seems someone has posted the part I was talking about earlier in the thread as a video.

More creepy than scary. The only time I actually screamed was when I first fought a Big Daddy. Other than that, I was too busy bitching about the game's choppy run on my PC to get scared. Bioshock's good for jumps and "WTF" moments, though.

By the way.
Those weird statue things in the bathrooms that wouldn't attack until you had turned around to look them multiple times.
Those were scary.

Not that im advertising but Steam is selling Bioshock for like 5 bucks today (part of the holiday sale).

I suggest everyone buy the hell out of it as its a fanastic game.

I like bioshock in that its horror is sort of more toward the disturbing. This is a normal city that just went to hell as hard as possible.

Yes, as a matter of fact-- for about ten seconds.

Then, the zap-n-thwack monotony begins...

The entire game is like Ravenholme cranked to eleven. It's incredibly immersive and packed with jump-out scares... I'm a Silent Hill vet and I can attest if you're not into horror it will freak your shit out.

That being said, it is an amazing, fantastic game and if you don't play it you are missing out on some deeply immersive cinimatic gaming.

I didn't find it to be especially frightening. In order for it to be truly scary, there has to be some sort of viable threat towards your character and after awhile you acquire enough arsenal to clean out most of the Eastern seaboard, so any real threat is more or less non-existent.

The atmosphere can still draw you in though. Worth playing, I think.

Some blood stains, creepy sound, and the occational enemy that jumps around on the wall. If you played HL2 and liked it you got nothing to be scared of.

I got scared ONCE throughout the whole game, when I turned around and saw a disfigured splicer two feet away from me, the rest is just way too actiony to be scary.
Ah, I remember that :) In that medical place with the mist? I was half expecting it, but then again I half expected it whenever I entered a new room. Still scared me enough to hit it with my pipe a few more times than necessary.
That guy? He got me too, i literally dis-configured the crap out of his body, i beat every part of him with the wrench, then electrocuted him and set him on fire, shot him a few times to.

Hate for that guy, i still won't go in that room.

Bioshock starts out as a scary game, then goes to two of the most ridiculous themes ever, and then it's just a shooter after that.

The only thing that intimidated the hell out of me at first were the Big Daddies, unfortunately considering how passive they were in the game..that feeling changed quick.

In the end, the game was just too easy, the Big Daddy needed to be aggressive from the moment they saw you.....and the re-spawn system killed the sense of any challenge in the game...

-_-

still love the game though....=)

It can be scary, but I wouldn't classify it as a horror game. The incredible atmosphere is used to turn the tension up to 11 a couple times.
