I don't own any of the current generation of consoles. I wouldn't call myself a PC elitist but frankly, I, like a fair amount of people, much prefer it. I prefer mouse and keyboard, switching only to a USB pad when I feel like it - not as default. I prefer the ability to use freeware. I enjoy the ability to use a flexible machine flexibly, frankly. I like that it's my stuff and it does what I want. I also love how a completely ridiculous gaming PC rig completely wipes the floor with the current generation of consoles on its version of their games.
That PC gaming is being cowed by console gaming is quite frankly obvious. Even PC-oriented series are being dragged down to the console level - look at Supreme Commander 2, it's a completely different game. The sequel is less epic, more cartoony, simpler, why? Because the 360 could. not. handle. the first game and the second had to be toned down to cater primarily for the console audience rather than the original market.
I first played Mass Effect on the Xbox 360. I was gutted that it apparently wasn't coming out for the PC. When it did, I could have exploded. Those sleepless nights I spent around a friend's flat playing it on their Xbox 360 soon were little more then practise for when I got the game for myself with a proper mouse and keyboard interface (ahh, soo much butter, far less clumsy, strugging with that stick was a seriously obstacle between me and the experience) - and turned the graphics settings up up and away past that the 360 has them at (and chugs on - seriously that's another thing that bugs me about current-gen consoles, they know the exact limitations of the thing, there's no excuse for crappy framerates. When the FPS on my PC chugs, it's because I was too ambitious. When it chugs on a console, it's developer sloppiness.)
Anyway, I beleive I've completely digressed here.
The fact is, PC gaming is here to stay. Consoles are a poor theatre for innovation and thus there will always be a need for the more flexible PC market and the crazy buggers who buy the latest hardware.
I just wish they would remember that there are still people out there who like turn based strategy. z: )
