"extremely violent" - Subject Zero.
"Irrationally violent" - Grunt.
"hyper-violent" - Thane.
What the hell is wrong with you, bioware?
Yeah, this sounds a bit ridiculous, scrapping original characters and making everyone a violent psychopath... it's the character that makes it interesting, not the psychoticness.

If there are 3 psychos in this there better be 20+ guys to join your squad.
Of all of them I'd say Thane is the only one I'd ever even consider putting on my squad. He seems like he'd have a Boondock Saint style to him. I only have 2 questions are they all going to be insane sociopathic criminals or will I be able to get at least one paragon type character? Can I get some of my old team back?

"I'M TOTALLY GONNA BLOW UP THAT LAB THAT COULD SAVE A SPECIES FROM EXTINCTION!"

This confused me. Why did I have to blow up the lab? Why couldn't I gather the data from the research and give it to the Council? It just felt weird.
We're still not entirely sure, seeing as it was blown up, but inside the lab you can see row after row of what look like cloning tanks, that plus the fact that the person in charge of the lab, a Krogan, was knee-deep in Husk research means that maybe the 'solution' Saren has to the genophage isn't that benevolent.

If Saren honestly wanted to use the Krogan army he created without worrying about them turning on him, as is prone to happen with the krogans, I'm pretty sure any plan he'd have to save the krogans would somehow include total subservience to Saren/You-Know-Who as part of a package deal.
Hm, I see your point. Still, I just thought it would make more sense to at least collect some data on it and give it to the council. That way you at least know what the hell they were doing in the lab.

But Shepard's policy of blowing everything up seems to satisfy.

Sorry Subject Zero, there's only enough room in my party for one psychotic, biotic abusing, shotgun wielding asshole and John Shepard doesn't bow out to anyone.

This is a classic example of why EA should never be asked to take a serious game, and make a sequel. They did it with red alert 3 (Tits = sales), now they seem to think you'd rather blow the shite out of everything. Of course, it may turn out there are some more decent characters, but a goody two shoes won't sell mass effect 2.

Here's what I figured from watching the trailer a few times over:

0:10-0:16 - "Turns out, mess with someone's head enough and can turn a scared kid into an all powerful *****." Possible indication of the BAaT training. Might be Rahna, the girl that became terrified of Kaidan after he killed Vyrnnus, during their BAaT training.
0:16-0:25 - Background of S.Z.'s appearance for the tattoos.
0:17 - What looks to be a key tattoo, possibly as a reminder of being confined to the BAaT program or time in prison.
0:26 - On her right arm, down her spine & the back of her neck are tats that resemble how geth bodies look (minus the tubes, which seem to be represented by the circles.)
0:29 - Tattoo of the Greek letter omega, possibly to symbolize that she is the end or it could be a reminder of the Omega Station (see Mass Effect:Ascension)
0:42-0:47 - The sex scenes return, and it shows you can have sex with someone other than Liara or Kaidan/Ashley.
1:13 - The batarians make an appearance in the actual game (in Mass Effect 1, you only saw them in the DLC, Bring Down the Sky)
1:14 - A very large LOKI Mech robot (human made or at least designed.)

Well she certainly fits in with the idea that Shepherd is rounding up a team of regulators to sort out the galaxy. Maybe the original team were too vanilla for the job (which is semi-unfortunate).

However they seem to have too many characters cut from the same bolt of cloth. I saw the Thane trailer and thought "great, here's the character to take Wrex's spot as the no holds barred killer". Then I saw Grunt's trailer and thought the same thing. Then I saw Sub Zero's trailer and thought exactly the same thing. I need a character to balance them out in my team; a Garrus to balance out my Wrex.

Thane at least looks like he might have a civilized side with the whole praying-over-those-he-kills ritual. But with Grunt and Subject Zero, it definitely looks like we're seeing the more renegade-ish teammates. And while I'm sure it's hard to recruit the sanest of individuals to a suicide run, I do hope there are some more paragon-minded squad mates. That being said, the video's cool and the character definitely looks interesting. Still excited for this game!
Exactly what I was thinking.

I'd rather have this girl than that blue chick with the oatmeal for brains any day. In fact, with the new dialogue system, I'm hoping there will be a quick-time option to defenestrate Liara rather than the background character we saw in the E3 trailer.

And this is speaking as someone who always goes pure Paragon/Light side. If Bioware has a real weakness, it's a blind spot for convincing or interesting "evil" options. Wrex and HK are great evil characters with interesting motivations, but the options they present the player always seem to be of the "NOW I WILL VERBALLY ABUSE AND/OR MURDER YOU" persuasion.

I think they're trying to address this by surrounding Shep with a rougher crew. ME1 stocked the Normandy with some great characters (and also Liara), but calling them "tame" would be an understatement. For all his bluster, Wrex was an introspective soul. Chafe as he might at regulation, Garrus wanted to keep the peace. The rest were pure sweetness and light.

Introducing some rougher allies in the darker second act makes perfect sense. Gollum, anyone? Lando? Wolverine? I could go on. And a desperate paragon character with decidedly renegade associates makes for a more interesting dynamic -- you have to use these people's talents to the fullest extent, while trying to influence or force them onto a more responsible path.

So I say: bring on the renegades!

I don't know why everyone gives this character such a hard time, she's obviously meant to be over-confident and self-important and it's not like her attitude has been applied to all of the game.
She appears to be a minority.

You still make your own choices, at the end of the day, or level, in this case.

They seem to be trying way too hard to come up with 'edgy' characters. So far I don't like any of them. Just too "hey guys am I cool yet?" I hope there's some depth to them to back it up story-wise, and that the other characters aren't as over-the-top as the ones already revealed.

Of all the decent examples you could choose from, you choose the plot-device, the "I've got no real personality", and the 'extreme' 90s anti-hero?

I do hope that's just a bad sense of humor...

Although I might prefer less overtly violent/evil seeming characters. Here is hoping that Mass Effect 2 is at least as good as ME1

Personally I'd like to see them include a rogue Geth, a character that will provide a little insight into the reasoning behind their xenophobia. All I really know about them is they were created by the Quarians, they rebelled & now they make great target practice
