Wow....almost makes me want to start playing again.
Was that an underwater instance/zone? I had that idea a while back.

That, my friends, is the difference between great graphics and great design. It's all in the composition and colours and movement and sense of huge depth and space. With all this it's just too bad almost all the male character models are so amazingly ugly. I don't know what happened there. Surely someone on the dev team knows that RL men have wrists? This isn't even a graphics issue, it's just a basic proportions fail.

Lastly, the new forsaken/silverpine/hillsbrad missions? OMGAWESOME. I simply cannot express all the awesome. And that's without counting the plants vs. zombies minigame.

Probably won't get the expansion til a little after the release. I'm not willing to camp out in Toronto in December. Still psyched.

Ugh, dang it. Every time I half convince myself that I'm not a WoW junkie (and I was doing so well, I haven't been playing in the last couple of months) something like this comes out and it takes me a few seconds after it's finished to realise my jaw's hanging open and my eyes are watering from not having blinked in the last couple of minutes.

I wonder if it's too late to go in and pre-order Cata...? *sigh*

They've only been remaking shit for a while now, that's my whole problem. Since the original WoW, there's not been a single new memorable piece of music that's come out of their artists. 'Least for me, anyways, but it's funny how it correlates with their former composer leaving after composing for the aforementioned game.

No Howling Fjord music?!
I guess it is repetitive, but it's one of the firsts I heard when Wrath was announced due to in-game made trailer shown at Blizzcon 07. Probably the most memorable from the WotLK soundtrack, imo.
I still think the best of the Warcraft music is from the Warcraft 2 era, but WoW does have plenty of nice pieces. It might just be the fact that War2 was my first Warcraft game.

Also the entire Coldarra segment here from about 0:53 to 1:40 or so.

All and all, WoW does look really good for the limitations of the game engine. They try to make this game playable on more machines so more people can run it. With the computer I had at the time I started playing in late 05, I probably couldn't have run it at all.

Good design, yes. Colourful, yes. Pretty?....It looks beyond dated.
After playing Metro 2033/seeing it on Max, it really puts into perspective what is and isn't damn nice/eye candy.

Objectively, yes, but those screens look dull, brown and just like every other modern regurgitated garbage to me. (green is my favorite color, so I'm inclined to feel that way)
Perhaps I'm still a child for liking a vast colorful spectrum, but I find WoW's cartoony style easier to look at (most of the time). Older models and trees are still laughably bad; and the repetitiveness of the same model/textures used in various place is old/tired. They did up the sprite resolution on the trees in Stormwind, for example, but you can still see that it's not the case everywhere.

Yep. Vashj'ir is an entirely underwater zone. A little look at it here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101908-Chronicles-of-Cataclysm-Off-the-Deep-End]. :)

In case anyone has forgotten why Blizzard has the best art team in the business... watch the video!

Even with an engine as outdated as the WoW engine, they can do some pretty amazing things. Easily the best art direction of any game out there.

It's so dated these days it's hard to see past it.

Sure, there's a couple of nice scenes, but, I don't think it's the kind of game that should be making videos to show off it's graphics.
It's not trying to show off the engine, it's trying to show off the incredible art direction. In that way, it succeeds in every way.

You don't have to be Crytek to make amazing visuals. Sometimes it's what the pixels represent more than how many pixels there are.

Well if this was the year 2000 I would be blown away, but 12 poly models in 2010 do not make a good cinematic movie.
I'm not saying the game needs more, but you can't sell me on a game with this trailer.

But forget me, all the WoW faithful were blown away by this, so I'm sure Blizzard hit the right demographic.

I absolutely love the environments in WOW, it's beyond any doubt my absolute favourite part of the game. Sure, the locations don't boast bleeding edge technology and the graphics are not anything worth notice in this day and age, but the art direction and the sheer attention to detail is some of the best in the industry, as is the diversity and the sheer density of interesting things to find in each unique location. Personally I very much like the cartoony look that Blizzard have chosen to take over the hyper-realism most other modern games boast. True, as the above poster demonstrates, it's a personal preference. But I don't play games so I can gawk over the latest DX11 pixel shader effects, but rather so I can enjoy immersing myself in a genuinely colourful and fantastical landscape.

I honestly wish more developers would follow Blizzards footsteps and put an emphasis on art over cheesy graphical effects. Visual presentation is about more than just how high of a poly count you can boast! Games like Okami, Psychonauts and indeed WOW prove that point all too well I think!

Anyway, very much looking forward to Cataclysm. I haven't the money to be playing right now, nevermind purchasing a new expansion, but that's just as well since the first few weeks of an expansion are always over-crowded and frustrating anyway. I can wait, and then when I start playing again, take my time exploring the new content at my own pace. In my opinion the way a game like WOW, with such vibrant and beautiful environments *should* be played.

Awesome, it looks like a low end xbox 360 game as opposed to before when it looked like a high end ps2 game!

There's more to eye candy than simply the amount of polygons and the likes. Metro 2033 looked bloody brilliant, even with DX9 graphics (can't wait to put it on DX11 when my new PC arrives), but pretty? Metro station, tunnels, tunnels, destroyed Moscow, tunnels, metro station, more tunnels, etc. Not that I'm complaining about that, it fits with the feel of the game, but I wouldn't call it pretty.

But while the graphical quality in WoW isn't of a high standard, it presents a lush variation of tons of environments, extremely rich in detail and clearly crafted with care despite it's technical limitations. Presented with the ab-so-lut-ely amazing music (I thought WotLK was good but fuck me patch 4.0 kicked it up another notch) it creates such an atmospherical environment.

If anything, I think that aside from a few early standouts like 'Making of the World,' the game's music has only gotten better.
I thought the original game's music was amazing enough. Then TBC came with amazing music like Terokkar Forest [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlFr_qqOp54], Silvermoon City [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu2frsrG70o] and, in my opinion the crown on at least their TBC work, Karazhan's music [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR7bqc2mheA&feature=related].

I thought it couldn't get any better and then, well, you provided the examples, WotLK came. And then I thought it couldn't get any better again and patch 4.0 hit. Funny thing is that I haven't even explored that much so far, I've been leveling a new Orc Shaman nice and slowly so I haven't even seen anything of the new Alli content yet, but when I heard the night music of the Northern Barrens (sadly that's not on Youtube yet, but I'd love to post it) I knew that this expansion is going to top the previous one, at least musically, once again.

Edit: Found it!
And there's only so so so so so much more...

The first part of the trailer was indeed pretty awesome, I agree on that. The second part, and that's me putting it lightly, was pretty damn mediocre at best.

The music you put up... I just can't see their soundtracks getting better since the original WoW, especially if these are their best tracks. For instance the Dragonblight one, through the majority of it there's not even a remotely coherent melody. And the music below the trailer, wow... "Why does something like that even exist?" is a question that comes to mind...
While it's hard to trump A Call to Arms, I massively prefer the new Ogrimmar music over the old one. Most actual ingame music, if you ask me, impacts me a lot more, though I'm very glad they haven't tinkered a lot with the NE music. You haven't linked a lot of that coincidently ;-) Consider themes like the one I linked above, the Northern Barrens one, the Karazhan one, the new Horde and Alliance themes, some of the new race-specific themes, they added so much. There's more instrumental variety then ever before, and I find that a lot of music is, say, fine-tuned to fit even better.

What I find best about them, hell all music from Vanilla to now, is how incredibly well they fit with the environments, it all blends together so perfectly to form one coherent experience.

Hmm, maybe I'll just give this game a try again. Probably not though, it's just too damn frustrating to be low-level and see all the max level guys posing around with their shiny armor and be all alone. I think my highest character is level 35 or something, and it already took ages to just gain one level.

Looks really meh.. *gets to 0:52* Holy fucking shit, that looks awesome. That sky thingy blew my mind.

One thing really bothered me, when will they get a better fucking composer? It seems like they can't do anything besides regurgitating old tunes or just ripping off the damn intro music from the original WoW... Jesus.
All their music isn't like in the trailer. Just listen to the music for all the zones, and you'll hear the diversity.

I have nothing but eternal admiration for the composers at blizzard. They have the best damn music in the industry.
