A recent thread by MetaMop about unnecessary swearing in games reminded me of another subject I've been thinking of for a while: blood.

What are your feelings for it?

I think blood really depends on what the subject matter is. For example, we see games like Gears Of War and Mortal Kombat with ludacris amounts of blood. Could those games really work without it? But we see things like Mario and Star Wars without a single drop; well Star Wars, a little bit but that was barely anything. Would we really want to change that?

So please, speak your mind. Do you like everything the way it is, or would you change it up? If so, what and how much?

It's hard to say, I have never been bothered by it and it has never amazed me in any game. I would have to say I would leave it, its not something that I feel is necessary but its fine nevertheless.

Honestly, I don't even notice blood in most games unless it goes waaaaay overboard, like the deaths in Dead Space 2 or Mortal Kombat. I'm far too descensitised in that regard.

To me, blood in games is like oxygen in real life. I won't notice if there IS oxygen, but I'll certainly be disconcerted if there isn't.

Well Splatterhouse is WAY WAY WAY too far. Well... its subjective. I bet people play Splatterhouse only due to the tits n' blood. Because theres no other reason to play it.
It purely depends on your Demographic (target audience).

I've never been bothered by blood and have in some cases been amused by its over use. It just depends on the game, some suit it, others don't.

I think its over used, but thats the entertainment culture right now, eventually we'll come full circle back to subtlety.

I adore Gears of War 1 & 2. I want God of War. I play Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

So yeah. I'm not troubled.

I dislike it. I typically turn the blood off if I can and de-splattered my Dragon Age, and removed gore from Fallout 3 (Yes, you can. Really.).

What's the point? I find it annoying.

i dont think he was asking if people are bothered but if it hinders or hurts a game
Ah, sorry about that.

It all depends on the game. The lack of blood in Star Wars games, or Mario games, or many Nintendo games, doesn't hurt them one bit.

But playing, say, Gears of War with the content filter on? S'not the same.

Nothing inherently wrong with blood, only that it's been massively over-used, and cliched now. Difficult to have much blood without looking like your another idiot thinking sticking lots of red in things makes it scary.

I don't really care one way or another, most of the time. If it's over the top, I don't like it. It doesn't generally hinder the game for me, but I'm not going out of my way for it, either.

I always liked the color red so I think blood looks pretty cool sometimes, and when it's overused for the sake of comedy it's strangely effective and can set a mood if something is bloodless until a certain point.
and now this song is stuck in my head

Madworld, Lol. Blood is appropriately placed in games these days. Violent games have people squirting it, LEGO games have people dropping bricks instead and Prototype was made out of it. I reckon the Australia version of L4D2 should still have more blood though. The experience just feels to ingenuine (is that how you say it?) corpses disappear before they hit the ground, a point blank shotgun will only propel zombies backwards and so on.

Ahem. Ludacris [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludacris], as opposed to ludicrous [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ludicrous]. Sorry, I've just seen that too many times here.

Anyway, I think a tasteful amount of blood can add to an experience, but sometimes a whole lot makes it more fun. If it's in a game that doesn't take itself seriously, like Gears of War.

Normally I'm pretty ambivalent on the matter. It doesn't belong in everything, but some games just aren't the same without it.

I liked the blood in Dragon Age, even though it did get ridiculous at times. But it's a good change from those RPGs and action games where your armour remains immaculate after gutting dozens of enemies.
