Tolkien. Can't go wrong with Tolkien.
Exactly, also I've heard A song of fir and ice by Georg R.R Martin is pretty good. Myself I recomend something by Ed Greenwood or Richard Lee Byers. These are all fantasy though so...if you don't like fantasy I'm out of other suggestions.

Dirk Gently's Hollitstic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams, anything written by Tom Robbins, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, anything written by Neil Gaiman are all vaguely psycological and sci-fi-ish

Titles are in quotation marks since I'm too stupid/lazy/don't know how to make them italics

Graphic novels:
-Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" series is fantabulous, as is anything the man writes. (although "The Graveyard Book" left me a little unsatisfied)
-"Wormwood: Gentlemen Corpse" by Ben Templesmith is gross and funny and bizarro
-"Death Note" by Tsugumi Ohba
-"Petshop of Horrors" by Matsuri Akino

Books:
-"Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad
-"The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams
-"The Belgariad" by David Eddings (first book in series is called "Pawn of Prophecy")
-"The Chronicles of Narnia" series by C.S. Lewis (first book is "The Magician's Nephew")
-"Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment" by James Patterson (first book in the "Maximum Ride" series)
-Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (first book: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" or "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" if in Europe)

Don't mess with that Twilight shit. It will rot your brain. If you want vampires, read "Dracula" by Bram Stoker or "Interview with the Vampire" by Anne Rice or even read "Hellsing" by Kohta Hirano. Anything, just don't read Twilight. Or, you can just suffer through it to say you've read it like I did, throw it in a dark musty closet, and never speak of it again.

Edit: It would help if I read, haha. Sci-fi, hmm?

Graphic Novels..um..Enigma, by..I'm not sure who wrote it. All I know is that it's amazing.

Other..Too many to list. I'm reading Thomas Pynchon at the moment. He's quite good.
PG Wodehouse is also great, if you're into that sort of thing..I don't know..

Books I would reccomend:
  • First Shot
    Fahrenheit 451
    Atlus Shrugged
    Contact Harvest
and The Anarchist Cookbook, in order to prepare for the inevitable bloody revolution.

You know, I was sure that that list was going to be longer (It's not that I don't read alot, it's just that 90% of the books that I read are crap).

Okay, so I just finished reading Watchmen for the 20th fucking time and I realized, I need some new books.

So, what should I do other than turn to my fellow Escapists?

What would you guys recommend for me. I'm heading out to Books A Million within the next few days, so really anything would be appreciated.

I tend to like a lot of graphic novels. I have almost all of Alan Moore's and Frank Miller's work with the exception of The Killing Joke which is on my list to get. I also love horror stories, murder mysteries, suspense, and psychological themed books.

So help me out!!

EDIT: Oh, yeah, this might help. I also like Scifi themes
You should read all of the Lovecraft that you can get your hands on. It seems to be your kind of books.

--Xvito, keeping it excellent.
The HP Lovecraft? What is that exactly?

Hows about Stephen King? Pick up any book of his, read it and enjoy. His books are all about that kinda 'psychorror' that you seem to like - so I'd go for it!

If you love sci-fi and have not read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, then you have not lived (I would normally say "God have mercy on your soul", but in this case, Douglas Adams was an atheist). Even 30 years later, it is still some of the most mind-bending hilarity this side of the Milky Way, without the heckling mess and attempts to explain itself that some sci-fi books I've been through fall prey to.
Yes to this. They remain my favourite books of all time.

Also Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (already mentioned, and I'm impressed) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, also by Douglas Adams.

Does it have to be fantasy/sci-fi? Just because I read these really good books recently and want to harp on about them but they weren't fantasy. They're about a tabloid journalist called Max Chard by a man called John Burns. Hilariously funny (the books I read were called Hack, Spike and Snap and one other I can't remember).

Yes to Terry Pratchet's Discworld also, but I did find some of them kind of boring.

Libraries are the bestest!!!!

And about the Twilight thing...yeah, its a little too late for that. About a year before the movie came out, a friend of mine (whose a girl) recommended it. I read 20 pages and wanted to burn it. Since when could vampires be in direct sunlight and don't have to drink blood?? Why is every person in that school so nice to the supposedly ugly new kid? Why is this "beautiful" vampire so madly in love with her? And since when can vampires be in love?

Stephen King's work is already kinda given. I mean, who hasn't read something by Stephen King.

He's a good writer though. I enjoyed Secret Window, Secret Garden and IT the best.

I recently got into the Farseer series by Robin Hobb (Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest). A brilliant series about the bastard son of the prince who is secretly trained to be an assassin.
Might be worth looking into.

I also agree with the idea that pretty much anything by Neil Gaiman is automatically worth getting into.

ummm since the Bram Stoker days, Dracula was able to go out in the sun, he just lost some of his powers is all and even in the Anne Rice ones could go out in the sunlight depending on their age

so vampires have been able to go in the sun for a long time in vampire lore

And since when can vampires be in love?
see my previous comment about Bram Stoker and Anne Rice and many other vampire stories

Oh, yeah I forgot Dracula could go out in the sun.

Okay, edit to my previous post. Since when could they go out in direct sunlight without being harmed or lose their powers.

Yeah, vampires are supposed to burn or hurt, not get "glitter powers". I always imagine the scene from "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" where the one vampire gets out of the carriage in order to try and save the girl he loves and is burning in agony to try and save her. Now that was cool, none of this glittery Twilight crap.
