Theres always books by Darren Shan or Eoin Colfer.....The Demonata and the Artemis Foul series are very good.
Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy if you want to recapture the Harry Potter feeling. Plus it's one of the wittiest series since Hitchhiker's, though by no means are they meant to be comedy books.

George RR Martins 'Song of Ice and Fire' is also a pretty damn good series. Both in the fantasy genre mind you, but both a geared towards a more mature audience than your average sword and sorcery book.

If you've just read Ender's Game read Ender's Shadow it is Ender's Game from the point of view of Bean. I liked Ender's Game but not so much the rest of Ender's Story, I did like all of the books that told Bean's story though.
My favorite book, The Beach by Alex Garland, the movie sucked but the book is Awesome (I've read it more than once) and gaming ties in a little. The author wrote the screenplay to the first 28 days zombie movie.

I really liked Catcher in the Rye when I was in high school.
1984 is good too, Brave New World as well with that theme.
Ever read Lord of the Rings? It's actually pretty neat. I like the linguistic flourishes.
If you want to be super depressed and weirded out: Fall On Your Knees by Ann-Marie Macdonald, I seriously could not put it down.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... Dragon Lance... and Dante Alegeri's 'Divinia Comedia', that ones a dry read though.
If I were you I'd totally pick up The Eye of the World, the first book in Robert Jordan's 'The Wheel of Time' series. They suck you in like there's no tomorrow. =-D
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This is the best book I've read so far, even better than my usual favorites by Anne Rice.

its basicly about a group of teens/children who were genetically altered at birth by a group of scientists, giving them 1% avian DNA, resulting in them having wings. the book is mostly about this group running from the organization that created them. its my favorite series of all time.

So recently, after taking a long hiatus from reading for fun, I finished Ender's Game. It reminded me how enjoyable reading can be (when not forced to read dull, school assigned books). However I have no idea what to read next so I turn to you, escapists. What books do you love? (fiction preferred but nonfiction is good as well)

i think you too would really love Maximum Ride. from the sound of it, it seems to have a very similar plotline. takes place in modern day US, Maximum Ride is about a group of teens/children who were genetically altered at birth to have 1% avain DNA, resulting in them having wings. the book is mainly about this group of kids running from the organization that created them, and trying to take them down. its my favorite book of all time~DarkHourPrince said:
Well you could always look into reading a series called "The Hunger games", by suzanne collins. It will make you think and is full of action. Lets see some other books ive enjoyed.

i am aware that this has likely already been said but im not gonna look for it, a song of ice and fire by george rr martin and the wheel of time by robert jordan are both extremely good( and as of yet unfinished) series that if you havent read i suggest you get off the internet and spend the next month of your life reading
edit: i cant believe i forgot about the five part hitchhikers guide to the galaxy trilogy they get hard to follow around the third or fourth book but its most definately worth it
