Also check out his Phoenix Guard series, it's set in the same Universe as the Jhereg books, only it's based off of the Three Musketeers and hence rocks the fuckin' show.
Yep, I'd have recommended the entirety of his works (he does characters really, really well) from the start, but I figured go with the first. Plus, the writing style in the Phoenix Guard matches the old Three Musketeers style, which can take a bit of getting used to.

If you find the 'I'm so goth it hurts' nature of the Ann Rice vampire world gets on your nerves (not saying the books are bad, just that bit annoyed me), read Agyar. Only thing that annoyed me there was that it was a novel, and no more like it was to be found. Again, amazing characters, amazing stories, amazing delivery.

Ok, enough derailing the thread with the exact opposite of the intended post (plus there's already one for recommendations somewhere around here).

Avoid: The Descent by Jeff Long
Why: Climactic scene is the opening, then we get something that reads like a bad history book, then a boring story with uninteresting characters. Interesting concept, horrible execution.

Well i belive the books that involve anything about star wars suck.
Did you read the Rogue Squadron stuff by Stackpole?
Or the Thrawn books by Timothy Zahn? And the more recent "Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader was quite good as well.

Hmmm, books/series to avoid? Sorry, I can't really think of any. I guess maybe I supress memories of the bad ones?

It's way too late now, but just incase, if anyone has yet to read The Da Vinci Code then just don't. Absolute arse that would have been ignored if not for the subject matter.
I'm afraid I have to agree on this one. I was halfway through the book before anything happens.

Oh, and I found two others:
1: The last part in the Gold Compass series. I love this series, but I found the Amber Spyglass to be a disappointment.
2: The Silmarillion. Again, I love Tolkien and his works, but I found this piece of work to be unreadable.
I agree with the Da vinci position, but i liked the amber spyglass. As for the silmarillion, tolkien didn't really write it, so much as have his vast collection of notes collected posthumously by his son Christopher and Guy Gavriel Kay(Who's works i love)but yes its pretty unreadable unless your hardcore on middle earth lore and you read textbooks on edwardian theatre for fun, it is a good resource.

my additions:
The lightstone sequence by David Zindell. OMG its the most awfull slow and formulaic fantasy ughh, and i love, Love the neverness sequence.
Tad Williams Otherland set, so so long so uninspiring
/seconded on the Dune set
I'm sure i'll think of more as soon as i hit post but ah well.

One word - Twilight.
The single most badly written (but somehow popular)book ever to appear on the new york best sellers list

I had to write a report for Obama's book Dreams From My Father, I don't have anything against Obama, but this book put me to sleep. I had to keep drinking soda just to pay attention.

Twilight is one of the most overrated series I've read. its nothing but a glorified fan fiction and is painful to read, definitely avoid
