Graphics help immersion their's no denying it, and new technology also improves limitations. So that new ideas can flourish, and others can be improved upon. We might even see a larger digital distribution service on consoles for example.

Just because a game has great graphics doesn't mean it's terrible in the gameplay department at all.

The prospect for a new generation is exciting, and I personally am looking forward to all of the great games that the next gen will bring.
i've got games older then most the people on this forum that would like a word about that 'better graphics = immersion' thing, and your right, good graphics doesn't mean bad over all game. but that's what they're going to be selling, the graphics. that is what the 'great innovation' they will likely be pushing. that and a 'good reason' the jack up the prince for new games.

while I'd like to hold out hope the next generation of games will be better, i can't. just don't see a reason to be excited about a new system that premisses more of the same, only prettier.

Well, I'm not sure, I want to welcome the new systems, but we know literally NOTHING about them. We can't condemn or praise something we know nothing about, so lets just leave it at that until we hear more at E3.

As long as they're not so powerful as to leave Nintendo out of the loop again I'll be happy. It really hurt the Wii not having cross-platform titles, and as I'll be getting a Wii U it would be nice to have that extra variety.

As for a universal "gaming device", I think that's definitely the way to go once the technology reaches a level where the machine literally has enough power to emulate reality (at least audio-visually). Let developers focus on the software rather than the hardware. I don't see it happening anytime soon though.

Also, to hit on what I said earlier, games still have a lot more avenues to go down in order to create immersion. Til recently we've only been focusing on audio and video, and tactile response is in its infancy with motion controls (and arcade steering wheels to a greater, though more specialised, extent). When games let you smell the rotting flesh of your enemies, and taste that honey mead, games will get that much more immersive... and that much more unpleasant :p

They really need to bolster the RAM on the machines to a min of 1 GB maybe 2 to be save. Put in some new 23 NM processors and they should be game. Also maybe allow for SSD harddrives?

I don't really give a damn is PC is too powerful compared to consoles. Just let it be, graphics are at an acceptable level now, we need no more.

The PC should be more independient games-wise (which won't happen due to markets (pretty reasonable))
You sir are god for that post, good to know i'm not alone.

I don't get the obsession with graphics in this day in age, fine ten years ago I would be pumped to see a graphics revamping into something less eye straining, but after MW showed up with its fancy graphics and the whole damn industry followed, I was satisfied enough to just stop giving a shit. It should be about game play now and less about graphics. Damn't my Graphics card isn't the best and I don't know shit about computers to work with them, can't we just keep it at a level where I can continue enjoying new games with out being frame rate fucked? please?? With sugar on top?

I'm ready for them. New console generations usually bring about a nice dose of fresh new IPs, and a bit of risk-taking.

Unless there are several absolute must-play games, I'll probably wait at least a year before adopting though. My new PC will handle things in the meantime.

I just hope they don't do anything stupid like go digital-only or something ridiculous like that. I wonder if they'll bother changing the controllers.

Seriously why do they have to keep pumping out new systems every couple of years? We are to the point now that they won't be much better than our current ones, and I am not paying another $400-$600 just so I can continue enjoying games.
Time to get a job.

Having a new console isn't an entitlement. You can keep playing your old box. Personally, I'm more interested in the rapid advancement of technology and using the same piece of hardware for a decade is the exact opposite of progress.

I feel mixed. I know that the technology for games could be a lot better with a new console, but I still don't feel like my 360 is outdated. My tune might change after I see the new specs. I guess we will just have to see.

Well, fuck. That's about the summary of all my thoughts on this. The PS3 is finally picking up, the Wii has a great send off in Skyward Sword, and the 360 is starting to wear the grey in it's beard proudly. So, of course they'll throw new ones at us. At least it will be around two years before they hit shelves, then two after that before the common, affordable model with a decent supply of games is available.

all I have to say is...

IT BETTER FUCKING BE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE

(I know I wont but it feels good to yell about it)

Bring it on, I've felt like I was playing games on an atari for the past 2 years with this old ass hardware.

Oh great, just what we need. people saying this is overdue because the pc is so far ahead, deal. Consoles have enough graphical fidelity already, any more is just superfluous. consoles, since they are a unified platform, are expected to use there hardware to the fullest. Making a game for the 360 or ps3 is already extremely expensive and the games, as well as the middle class studios are suffering for it. People could be making perfectly good games and no one buying them because they don't have the money to create them in the top tier graphics engines of today. The triple a console scene is shoving more and more people out until only the huge mega corporations / publishers can afford to make games for them at all. Since every bodies pc isn't the same, pc developers can create games from the high and low end of the visual spectrum. Consoles don't get that, games have to be at their fullest ability graphically and we have the fidelity to make huge epic worlds, we don't need anymore. It alienates studios and quality games that can't be produced because of the huge cost. We do not need better graphics, we need to look at the big picture and just work on making better games.

Can't say I really care all that much. Given past history they're technically overdue for a new console release, but given how expensive development has gotten (and continues to get), and how lackluster this generation has been in general compared to previous generations, I'll be sticking with my PS3 and PC for quite a while, with emphasis on the latter.

Honestly, the way the console industry has been moving, I'm not sure I'd buy another console again. They'd have to pull out some pretty incredible stuff to win me over.

So what new tech can allow for much better AI? Because that's what we need more than anything.
We already have that tech. It's right there in the Xbox 360 and PS3. Even moreso in the PC. The CPU power we have at our fingertips is more than enough I'm sure. It's just not so easy.
The CPU power needed for AI depends on what you want it to do.

But the real issue is that AI programming is just plain hard. All the theoretical stuff is still relatively primitive, and difficult to use.

Meanwhile, what the average game uses is beyond primitive. By the standards of AI research, 99% of games are using techniques that can barely qualify as 'intelligent'.

However, Artificial intelligence isn't really what's required in most game genres. With some notable exceptions, it's quite easy to design AI that can absolutely destroy any human opponent.

Ironically, what's usually needed in games is 'artificial stupidity'. The AI has to be stupid enough to do make mistakes a human being can exploit.

Furthermore, these mistakes have to be thought out very carefully, because they have to resemble the kind of mistakes a real person would make, rather than just any old weird thing.

You have to make the players believe they outsmarted the computer. Not that the computer is deliberately doing something unbelievably stupid.

Or that it fails to notice something which any human would see immediately.

It's a programming problem far more than it is a computing resource one.

with everything that is going on right now, is it REALLY a good idea to go to new consoles when the current crops are still obscenely expensive and have untapped potential?

I'm a PC gamer at heart, but I will buy a PS4 if it has backwards compatibility. I will also grow wings and punch the moon and that day too.

Unless one of the big 3 companies revolutionized the fabrication process for them, the cost for the new console would be too damn high
