I think the problem is that we are getting VERY close to the point where we won't be able to tell the difference even if they are side to side, but things are kind of slowing down exponentially in the graphics department. Almost everything looks amazing and it seems the biggest limitation is time and effort instead of technology.LetalisK said:Joccaren said:Higher detail models, higher detail on textures, further view distances - resolution is just the smallest part of it.LetalisK said:I have a hard time differentiating between 780p and 1080p/i most the time, so I don't see how this will benefit me graphically.
As an example (Pictures only, videos automatically have decreased quality) of simply texture improvement:

And more that I currently CBF looking for.
Add to that more shader effects, better lighting and even new effects, and you will notice a major graphical upping.
Compare a PS2 game to a PS3 game. That sort of thing.Perhaps I overstated it. When put side-by-side, I can tell the difference. But without that, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you just playing a game because I don't pay that much attention to the graphical details(edit: Or, as perhaps a better example, the difference when it comes to movies). However, I would be able to tell the difference between PS2 graphics and PS3 graphics without needing a side-by-side. I suppose that's why I don't personally feel moving up to 1080 is as much of a graphical leap.TomLikesGuitar said:No one is really that obsessed with graphics. There are plenty of overhyped garbage games with both shitty and amazing graphics, just as there are plenty of amazing games with both shitty and amazing graphics.Jak23 said:I know! I hate this obsession with graphics over original gameplay! I think a new generation of consoles will do more damage than good, due to high production costs.Vegosiux said:It won't be backwards compatible, I'm pretty sure it won't be.
And no, I'd rather that happened later, AFTER this obsession with graphics settled down.
A lot of the reason why the consoles need to upgrade is because games are simply becoming more complex, and the current consoles may not even have the processing power to run the engine at all, let alone output current generation visuals.
I still don't see how people can say this. The difference is pretty substantial. You may need a better monitor and/or glasses, lol.LetalisK said:I have a hard time differentiating between 780p and 1080p/i most the time, so I don't see how this will benefit me graphically.
Well.... sounds like you are willing to spend quite a lot....thisbymaster said:They really need to bolster the RAM on the machines to a min of 1 GB maybe 2 to be save. Put in some new 23 NM processors and they should be game. Also maybe allow for SSD harddrives?
I have to disagree with that assessment as I am well over 15 and more than capable of buying a new console if I so desired. Its just not a good idea because the benefits would be negligible.Hammeroj said:I think it's funny, as someone pointed out earlier, that most of these people who are opposed to a new generation are almost entirely 15 years old or younger. Explains the inability to see past graphics.
This! Screw graphics; we need better A.I.DustyDrB said:So what new tech can allow for much better AI? Because that's what we need more than anything.
I think first versions will be backwards compatible, to boost the sales. Then after they sell enough, they'll release newer versions without backwards compatibility and all the other cool features.Vegosiux said:It won't be backwards compatible, I'm pretty sure it won't be.
That or the more expenive of the launch models will be backwards compatible for five minutes, most of them will have disc drives that stop working unexpectedly and then no PS4 will be backwards compatible ever again.Vegosiux said:It won't be backwards compatible, I'm pretty sure it won't be.
Some people dont and some people simply dont want a bunch of hardware laying around, when one machine could suffice. Besides would you buy a ps3 if it broke while already owning a ps4?Somonah said:Woot new xbox and playstations!
Now we can upgrade from 7 year old hardware to 2 year old hardware!
EDIT - i never understood people always wanting backward compatibility so can someone explain it?
Example why i don't get it. I own a PS3, now when it comes out i'll probably get a PS4, but why would i care if it's backward compatible? I already own a PS3.
