Unless they're backwards compatible. I'm more then likely just going to wait and build a gaming PC. I've spent a lot on 360 games and I'm not gonna buy another system unless I can play them on it.

And this becomes the point where the games industry implodes on itself. As lacking and overdue we are for a new console generation, the tech to develop better games for better consoles just isn't here yet. By releasing a new generation, games are going to HAVE to look better to warrant the release of the system, and with that extra graphical fidelity, games are going to become even more shallow and unfun. The games industry has shown you can't have one without sacrificing from the other.

OH COMON!!

You haven't even given us a software update to allow PS2 Games to be played but instead can use PS1 games. At least give me THAT before you make a PS4.

I have a hard time differentiating between 780p and 1080p/i most the time, so I don't see how this will benefit me graphically.
Higher detail models, higher detail on textures, further view distances - resolution is just the smallest part of it.
As an example (Pictures only, videos automatically have decreased quality) of simply texture improvement:

And more that I currently CBF looking for.
Add to that more shader effects, better lighting and even new effects, and you will notice a major graphical upping.
Compare a PS2 game to a PS3 game. That sort of thing.

And no, I'd rather that happened later, AFTER this obsession with graphics settled down.
I know! I hate this obsession with graphics over original gameplay! I think a new generation of consoles will do more damage than good, due to high production costs.
No one is really that obsessed with graphics. There are plenty of overhyped garbage games with both shitty and amazing graphics, just as there are plenty of amazing games with both shitty and amazing graphics.

A lot of the reason why the consoles need to upgrade is because games are simply becoming more complex, and the current consoles may not even have the processing power to run the engine at all, let alone output current generation visuals.

I still don't see how people can say this. The difference is pretty substantial. You may need a better monitor and/or glasses, lol.
Perhaps I overstated it. When put side-by-side, I can tell the difference. But without that, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you just playing a game because I don't pay that much attention to the graphical details(edit: Or, as perhaps a better example, the difference when it comes to movies). However, I would be able to tell the difference between PS2 graphics and PS3 graphics without needing a side-by-side. I suppose that's why I don't personally feel moving up to 1080 is as much of a graphical leap.
I think the problem is that we are getting VERY close to the point where we won't be able to tell the difference even if they are side to side, but things are kind of slowing down exponentially in the graphics department. Almost everything looks amazing and it seems the biggest limitation is time and effort instead of technology.

The point is, though, that we have to embrace each step if we ever want computer graphics to hit the point where they are indistinguishable from reality.

Wish they waited. I thought that was the point of the motion waggle thingies, to add more lifetime to those things.

Well, what the hell are you gonna do? And I too hope that the consoles are backwards compatible.
Even if it'll take me a few years to get them. I'll likely get the Wii U first, when I begin my descent into the next generation.

Also the economy sucks right now. I know that will do absolutely nothing to stop them, but it does.

The facts:
I am actually a shocked how young many of you appear to be, and I don't mean that in any derogatory sense. I just get the impression this current gen is your first, because you don't understand that we are LATE for the next gen. It doesn't normally take this long for a jump from one console to another. We need another jump to, because developers have both said and displayed in their games that they are starting to struggle with the limitations of the current hardware. Xbox graphics are getting to the point that they seems like they would be ideal... for a Nintendo game. I am basically saying the 360 now looks the equivalent of the wii when it first came out, because we all know have have seen how much better games can look (look at Battlefield 3 for the 360 vs. the PC)

My opinion:
Most games today are solely riding on their graphical capabilities, that said I am pretty bored already... Xbox games - for example - are starting to all blend together and look like over-saturated moving clumps of cake frosting. I am playing Skyrim right now and this is all that's going through my mind the whole time. If the industry is going to keep making un-imaginative crap with gameplay a secondary thought, the color spectrum set to perpetual brown and gray, and every character being a scruffy man's man... then dammit, you better at least make it all more real looking because that's the only redeeming value it has anymore.

They really need to bolster the RAM on the machines to a min of 1 GB maybe 2 to be save. Put in some new 23 NM processors and they should be game. Also maybe allow for SSD harddrives?
Well.... sounds like you are willing to spend quite a lot....

SSDs? holy crap...

A single ssd of the same size as an hdd in a console costs AS MUCH AS THE CONSOLE.
Okay... maybe slightly less. Add to that more ram, new processors...
I really wish companies would stop developing FASTER ssds and start to make CHEAPER ssds so that they can actually be put to use practically.

i think this info is lies. theyve just released Move and Kinect, i doubt they're gonna make such a huge investment now. or maybe it was a last minute thing they decided after seeing Nintendo was upgrading aswell

This is too damned soon and I am tired of hearing the incorrect statement of "THE PC is BEING CAPPED BY THE LAGGING CONSOLES" or "ITS ABOUT TIME". Seriously, neither of those are true. Please comprehend this. THey have yet to figure out the ins and outs of the current generation to maximize the output of the system. If they cant do that, then all the shiney new hardware in the world is NOT going to make a massive improvement on what they are able to produce.

I think with trying to release a new console cycle this early, if backwards compat of some type is not available it would be pure insanity.

EDIT :

I think it's funny, as someone pointed out earlier, that most of these people who are opposed to a new generation are almost entirely 15 years old or younger. Explains the inability to see past graphics.
I have to disagree with that assessment as I am well over 15 and more than capable of buying a new console if I so desired. Its just not a good idea because the benefits would be negligible.

So what new tech can allow for much better AI? Because that's what we need more than anything.
This! Screw graphics; we need better A.I.

I think first versions will be backwards compatible, to boost the sales. Then after they sell enough, they'll release newer versions without backwards compatibility and all the other cool features.

If they are backwards competable I might get the PS4 a year or two after they're released. If not... well, it'll have to wait five years or so. I still got plenty of PS3 games to play!

That or the more expenive of the launch models will be backwards compatible for five minutes, most of them will have disc drives that stop working unexpectedly and then no PS4 will be backwards compatible ever again.

Not sure whether thats a good or a bad thing, hopefully better graphics wont be the only new feature on these systems. It would be a nice change to have some games with smarter AI's. Either way i wont be buying a console, upgrading my graphics card to keep up with the latest console ports makes more sense considering my current financial state.

Woot new xbox and playstations!

Now we can upgrade from 7 year old hardware to 2 year old hardware!

EDIT - i never understood people always wanting backward compatibility so can someone explain it?

Example why i don't get it. I own a PS3, now when it comes out i'll probably get a PS4, but why would i care if it's backward compatible? I already own a PS3.
Some people dont and some people simply dont want a bunch of hardware laying around, when one machine could suffice. Besides would you buy a ps3 if it broke while already owning a ps4?
