I just saw this article on my home page:
Link [http://autos.sympatico.ca/automotive-news/3501/boy-throws-knife-at-mom-to-prevent-dui]

"According to local authorities, a Winnipeg teenager stabbed his mother this past saturday in an attempt to stop her from drinking and driving.

The confrontation began when the 14-year-old boy attempted to take his 31-year-old mother's car keys because he felt she was too drunk to drive. The mother fled the house with the keys and her son responded by throwing a knife, striking her in the upper body.

The unidentified woman remains in hospitable in a stable condition. The teenage boy has been charged with aggravated assault, and is currently being held at the Manitoba Youth Centre."

So, what's up with that? I think the kid has his heart in the right place - that is, to try and prevent drunk driving - but to throw a knife at someone? Maybe he plays too many video games! *gasp*

Wait, then he'd know a knife is an insta-kill... and probably wouldn't have done it.

Anyway, what do you Escapists think? Pretty crazy? Kudos to the kid or should he be punished?

Boy: [sub]("Idea forming...")[/sub]

I'm with you, OP. Heart in the right place, but wrong means to resolve the issue.

Well, first thought is that video games will be blamed for this pretty quickly. Second thought is that the boy should have called 911 with his mother's license plate and reported the DUI. That would have been the far more sensible and responsible thing to do. Kudos for the boy's initial attempts to prevent her from driving, but nega-kudos for the knife throw.

Half punishment. He was right, but reacted wrong.

He could've tried wrestling her to the ground and taking the keys back, or worse comes to worse, call the authorities for her own good.

The mom would hopefully just do some probationary work.

This confuses me on so many levels.

How did the situation where she was running and he was holding a knife in a throwing position arise?

How did he think that was a good idea?

Oh God, you have no taste.

If nothing else, he should have just made a show of calling the police and reporting her license plate and general location.

I'm surprised he was able to throw a knife in the first place.

You can't just toss any old kitchen knife and expect it to hit point first, especially at someone running.

Oh God, you have no taste.
Good, so the intentionally groan-worthy pun caused somebody to groan.
Mission accomplished.

But I didn't groan, I laughed quite hard. And I felt guilty!

Man, that kid has pretty good skills to pull off something like that.

... Not that I condone it. He's a bit wack-o, but at least his heart was in the right place. Hope that woman pulls through. I bet she'll never try to drink and drive again, though.

I don't think he was throwing to stab her, just maybe cut a little bit or hit her with the hilt. I mean, how many fourteen year old kids know how to throw a knife well?

Time to try harder...

It could be he had little other choice. Stabbing her in the right place is guaranteed to not kill her, but if she got in an automobile drunk, she could have very easily killed a child, another motorist, or an entire family on the road even mere blocks from their house, before police would arrive to try to find the car and its license plate number.

You can't reason or rationalize with a drunk person, especially a self-centered one that wouldn't even listen if sober.

Stabbing is safer than bludgeoning or anesthetizing with drugs too, maybe next time he should get a tazer; but since he probably didn't have one, a shallow cut with a disinfected blade would certainly get across the point.

I could almost see a conversation like that happening before the knife throwing. The kid trying to stop the mother; the mother saying what are you gonna do call the cops, do you want me to go to jail? Maybe there was some anger involved or something though. Could be he was pissed that she wouldn't listen to him or something.

Edit: I think they should just give the kid probation and as long as he doesn't seem like a phsycopath let him live in foster care.

You call that bad taste? Well then don't look at my other post.

Hell, if no one's died then it's fair game.

"Obviously those dern vid'ja games of his!
Corruptin' the youth n whatnot..."

Or atleast that's what FOX news will say.

"Then he got down and prayed to Private Allen, the terrorist from the newest war simulator, Modern Warfare 2! Details at 11!"
[sub]This joke may or may not actually come to fruition. If it does, I fucking called it.[/sub]
