The man who wrought "Girl with the dragon tattoo" because the gap would be bearable, and he can see how successful it became :)

Hunter S. Thompson, if only to see him literarily crucify then sodomize modern American politics and politicians, then drop acid while shooting at adoring college students from his patio.

Ernest Hemingway, if only to see him beat the Emo out of this generation and then run for president under the "playboy/ award winning writer/ slayer of men and of lions in that order" ticket.

Leo Tolstoy so he can finish War & Peace. No, wait I wish that book had never ended so he better be coming back for awhile. Not to mention it would be interesting to talk to him. I also think Charles Dickens might have a career in stand-up as soon as he gets used to modern humour. I love how my CAPTCHA is "charmed life", seems somehow appropriate.

I've always thought it would be cool to bring Tolkien back to life and show him the incredible movies that were made out of his work, so that would be my preference.

Well this...

But why not Robert Jordan since he himself couldnt finish the Wheel of Time Series and he was an excellent writer.

I think I'd rather ask him to complete his universe instead of C. Tolkien publishing all his unfinished notes.

Arthur C. Clarke.
We need you, high-concept science fiction, now more than ever.
Arthur C. Clarke would be my pick for sure. We need more authors like him.

Asimov and Jordan. Mainly Asimov. And I guess Douglas Adams.

And if we can cure Pratchett sooner rather than later, that would be Ace.
I've never read any of Asimov's work yet, but I hear he's good. So yeah, him too.

Robert B. Parker.

I was really getting into his series and I was more than horrified to learn that he'd died of that heart attack. I know he could have added much, much more.

He's only been gone for a year and he's not a major author but his passing depressed me.

I'm seeing all these people calling out for Lovecraft and Cthulhu, and it makes me sad, because I doubt most of them have even read his works. Cthulhu was a small part of the whole mythos. Beyond that, dude was pretty damn racist. True, it would be a product of his time, but still. I also have some doubts about the callers for Douglas Adams having read things like the Dirt Gently books (and by God they should).

Now, someone who not only deserves it, but needs it? Robert Jordan. Why? Simple, his work was unfinished. He never completed the story. Yes, Brandon Sanderson will complete the wheel and theres nothing wrong with his writing, but tarnations if I don't want to see the man who started it, finish it.
