Ramen. And laxative for when all the ramen catches up to you.

Oh wait, you're in the military? You probably know about the catching up bit already then. Good 'ol MREs.

Well, since I happen to hate mac and cheese, yes, for me there are lots of things more delightful than mac and cheese with burger.

Personally speaking, I love fried rice. I really enjoy making it myself, but in order to do that you have to have made steamed rice at least one day ago, though if you have steamed rice that's even older than that, it's even better. So, if I get the hankering for fried rice, and hadn't made any steamed rice recently, I have to go to a chinese take-out place. Which isn't bad, cause they usually make pretty damn good fried rice too... but if you've got the steamed rice, it's not a difficult recipe to make at all. Throw the rice in a sauce pan or wok with some oil, fry it up a bit, add chopped onions, chopped carrots, and peas, as well as some soy sauce and salt, and you've got a delicious meal.
Try frying crushed garlic in the oil first, then the onions then the carrots, then the peas, THEN the rice. Soy sauce to taste. At least, that's the way I make it, and it tastes so good. Or you can add some eggs before adding the rice. That works wonders too.

Hummus is easy and pretty cheap to make, and you can eat it with anything from crackers to bread.

Also, when feeling lazy but looking for a quick snack, I'd just spread some Cheez Whiz on a tortilla and roll that shit up. I never said it was anything necessarily delicious, but it did the trick.

*Originally Is there anything better than? Renamed to open the topic lol*

So, as I sit here and type while eating, I am enlightened by the delighting recipe that is quick, easy and delicious. I'm talkin about good ol' Kraft Dinner Mac and Cheese with a pound of hamburger spiced and thrown in to the mix.

Is there anything better than delightful KD mixed with burger? Discuss, and add your favourite quickie meals for times of gaming and/or internet surfing... or if you're just too damn broke to make anything else.
Actually, I can't name a better dish. This is actually my favorite thing to eat. Well, I make my own cheese now, but the kraft stuff is good enough. Another cheap food that is good is chicken and rice.

So much stuff is cheaper when you make it yourself because, as @tkioz pointed out, you pay a lot for packaging etc.
I eat vegetarian a lot because my sister is a vego and it's just easier to make the one meal so anything we cook is relatively cheap.
Vegetarian lasagne is a great, easy meal, and mac and cheese too when it is home-made.

Tip - when making anything with grilled cheese on top toss on some bread crumbs as well. Nice and crispy topping.

Get something called Steak-umm's. You can get a box of about 15 slices for $5 and you've got about 7-8 sandwiches there, plus a couple dollars on cheese and veggies.

Oh god Cup'O'Noodles...

After freshman year I swore I would never again eat Cup'O'Noodles.

I have not regretted it.

Ooh, also, this is a great one:

Boil rice
strain
crack in raw egg and stir.

The heat from the rice cooks the egg and it's all delicious and gooey.

season with salt, pepper, soy sauce what evs.

I realize that's how a lot of people make it, and while I might consider the garlic, I don't know that the rest appeals to me. When I have fried rice, I really like for the rice to be the star of the show, so to speak. That's why I don't like to add eggs, they feel like a distraction to me. That's also why I generally throw in all the onions, peas, and carrots at once, I prefer for them all to integrate into the fried rice flavor as much as they can. For the most part, they're just there to add a bit of color. Well, except for the onions, I actually do really like the onions.

Just a quick question:

How much do you spend for food in a week? Around my college, there are a lot of side-street mini-"carinderias" (small food places). One in particular served dinosaur chicken (as in a fucking ass-huge piece of chicken) and a cup of rice with free soup for 1 dollar, give or take. Extra rice costs less than 20 cents (same goes with the soft drinks/soda/juice/iced tea. If you spent more than 2 dollars per meal you'll be feeling bloated). That's the average price per meal, and you're spoiled for choice. There must be a hundred food establishments around there (from snacks to full meals).

*Prices are an estimated conversion to the US dollar.

I see... Well, the barest minimum I do is just garlic. But then I'd have to cook something else for me to eat with it (hot dogs and eggs are a GREAT combination). I call it the Perfect Breakfast. Which you can eat at any time of day.

EDIT:
Sorry for the double-post.

Oatmeal, your favorite breakfast cereal (generic brands), powdered milk with chilled water, fruits, brown sugar.
Cost: less than $1 per serving.
Nutrients: Better than most $30 steak, since you're getting plenty of fibers and vitamins, and probably the least amount of chemical additives in your entire life.
Taste: If you like creamy, powered milk is your friend, since you can dial the creamy factor up to 11. It's a beautiful accident that I found out from being broke.
Advantages:
1) Easy to cook (no heating required)
2) Easy to take out (powdered milk means you can throw everything into a plastic container, then carry it around all day at minimum weight. As soon as you add water, you got a ready-made meal)
3) Easy to clean. Just rinse out the container. No need for detergent, since you don't use oil to cook.

I alternate this (for breakfast, and lunch on weekends) and homecooked meals (usually stirfry, stew, hotpots, or pasta) for under $20 a week total. I ended up in way better shape than most of my friends who spends hundreds per week on food and diet supplements.

oh god all that mixed together? that sounds..disgusting. i absolutely never have a squeezy stomach about anything but that sounds awful.

the food i eat? right now?

well typically a box of cheez itz takes me a long way, a good handful or two every hour or two gets me throughout most of the day, then for my main meal of "college" food i'll usually cook up a chicken breast or some mashed potatoes, and i'll usually make a few heated rolls with it, those are fucking amazinggg

Powdered milk and protein powder is awesome to take to the gym. Add water after a workout and BAM, instant protein shake.

I think I've already said it somewhere, I'm no longer a college student, and don't HAVE to eat cheap... rather I like looking for quick, easy meals that don't come in a plastic tray and get thrown in the microwave. Another reason is I work 12 hour shifts, and can get a call at any minute, so the downtime I have is a huge piss off to waste on cooking instead of eating.

Thanks a ton to everyone that has been contributing, broke college kid or not, all these suggestions are awesome, keep it up!
