Hey all.

I been thinking. When I was in school I was defined by the tests I had passed and the grades I have acheived. In the UK if you want to become a full citizen of the country you have to demonstrate that you have certain knowledge and pass a test. Before you take your practical driving test you have to pass you theory test. Two steps of summative assessment which give you the credentials to claim to be a)a graduate, b)a citizen or c)a driver.

I propose we settle the hardcore debate with a series of questions, with a pass mark of 80% that a hardcore gamer must acheive before counting themself as one. Let's make this knowledge based folks.

I'm looking for question suggestions (do not include answers please) and a suggested number of how many questions should be involved.

Are you hardcore enough?

The way I see it, you can only be matched as a hardcore gamer if you have a rounded knowledge of all game types and mechanics.

If you are playing a FPS online, you MUST have a double death/kill ratio. If you can't even succeed in taking down 2 guys before each death, you are a failure!

If you are playing a MMORPG... Well, I'm out of ideas there. Help?

Well... I only got shit on the FPS.
Basically, you have to be more than fairly good at all kinds of games before you may pass and call yourself "hardcore"

This can only be tested in practice and theory though.

I want to be a casual gamer though! Regardless of how much I play, how good I am, what games I play... I'm a casual gamer in attitude (read: I play for fun), I don't want to be hardcore!

Have you beaten Mega Man without cheating? Mega Man 2? Mega Man 3? etc...
Have you beaten Ninja Gaiden without cheating? Ninja Gaiden 2? Ninja Gaiden 3?
Have you beaten Contra without cheating? Super Contra? Operation C? etc...
More along those lines.

Ehhhhhhhhh. There's no real definition of "hardcore gamer".

My personal definition is just how much time you spend playing games. If you play every now and then. Like maybe for one hour, three times a week in order to kill time. That would fall in the "Casual gamer" category. But if you play for a few hours or more, three times a week or more. Then you'd fall into the "hardcore gamer" category.

I still don;t know whether to define a hardcore gamer as someone who games daily, someone who games 8+ hours in a row, someone who games so much thay have no life outside gaming, or just someone who avoids casual games.

OT: These debate can only be resolved when someone gives a clear cut definition of 'hardcore gamer', which will never happen.
507, with the new ones that have been revealed. ;)

but apart from that, yeah, we could do with a definition, or a better phrase to describe the intended target.

I always looked at the terms "Hardcore" and "Casual" as referring to time/effort spent rather than gaming knowledge.

So a housewife who plays The Sims nearly twelve hours a day is more hardcore in my book than somebody who has played a wide variety of games with fewer hours. Afterall, you could never touch a game yet call yourself hardcore by simply looking up all that gaming knowledge on your local internet machine (Just sayin' you could, but I'm sure nobody would).

Assuming that this is just a bit of fun...

Of the top of your head, name three games designed by Eugene Jarvis.

Name both of the creators of Elite and the name of the computer it was created for.

Which platform was Tetris created for?
(last one should filter out the people using wikipedia)

Aw snap! That'll do pig, that'll do...

Edit: Although I don't think that test goes far enough. I think they're still room for more grilling, like Mastermind, anyone ever watch that TV show?

Edit: Also that picture is waay to Halo centric on the bottom line and generally I think they images reflect too much of modern games. One cannot be a movie buff by knowing a lot about cinema of the last 5 years...

Incidentally to all the happy ragers on the thread. I should point out that the reason I mentioned the driving theory/practical tests was to create a paralell to gaming. I feel before we get to the practical test one should have a sufficient level of knowledge to qualify, much like Dan grades in many martial arts.

I think that Hardcore is a term that annoys me.

I call myself a Core Gamer because I love games, I spend time reading up on games, watching videos on it talking about them not to mention the hours I waste playing.
I think you should be considered a core gamer because you love games and play them regularly, Being good at them shouldn't come into the equation.
