I find myself in a middle ground between both.

I enjoy casual shooters and adventure games as well as beat 'em ups and hack n' slashers.

But you sit me infront of a good competative FPS like Unreal Tournament and I will blow most people away, I'm not a huge fan of realism and I miss med-packs and being able to carry a stupid amount of big, bulky and killy weapons.

Eh...

I'm not sure this'll work. It's very difficult to define hardcore gamer. Some might think they're hardcore because they play nothing but Call Of Duty and have a high K/D ratio. Some might think they're hardcore because they've spent 13 hours straight playing Civ 4 on hardest. Some might think they're hardcore because they managed to get 5 Stars on expert on every song in Rock Band 2. Some might think they're hardcore because they managed to beat every Myst game without using a walkthrough.

There's not really any way I can think of to make a test that doesn't exclude at least one legitimate gaming group. It's an admirable idea, but I'd need some hefty convincing it'll work.
But it's a goddam test. The whole purpose of it is elitist, I'm not after a hardcore title that everyone can gain, I'm looking for champions, I'm looking to make hardcore being something worth earning: A legitimate gamer group and a hardcore gamer are two different things. I just think if we're going to use this term, let's make it f***king HARDCORE!

I think that Hardcore is a term that annoys me.

I call myself a Core Gamer because I love games, I spend time reading up on games, watching videos on it talking about them not to mention the hours I waste playing.
I think you should be considered a core gamer because you love games and play them regularly, Being good at them shouldn't come into the equation.
I like the subtlety and shades of grey involved in your use of the term Core Gamer. In fact I like it a lot. Indeed, I would probably define myself as a Core Gamer based on your definition.

However, I'm looking to define Hardcore Gamer in the way one defines World Champion or Dan grade martial artist. There needs to be a test for those who wish to persue it. My feeling is that it will be the only way to end the debate. For example, I play basketball but I'm not a world champion player or an All Star, those titles only go to those who deserve it and have passed various tests...

The answer is simple, because simplicity is the way.
Does one consider themselves as hardcore gamer? If yes, they are. If no, they are not.

Personally i don't consider myself as such despite around 20 years of gaming experience, plenty time wasted on MMOs and a lot of gaming time / week. I just treat it as entertainment, not 'all there is to my life'.

Ah well that's easy.
Competition, on A variety of different games and genre, Only then do you really get to know whose cream of the crop.

Hey all.

I been thinking. When I was in school I was defined by the tests I had passed and the grades I have acheived. In the UK if you want to become a full citizen of the country you have to demonstrate that you have certain knowledge and pass a test. Before you take your practical driving test you have to pass you theory test. Two steps of summative assessment which give you the credentials to claim to be a)a graduate, b)a citizen or c)a driver.

I propose we settle the hardcore debate with a series of questions, with a pass mark of 80% that a hardcore gamer must acheive before counting themself as one. Let's make this knowledge based folks.

I'm looking for question suggestions (do not include answers please) and a suggested number of how many questions should be involved.

Are you hardcore enough?
Well, there's a problem right there. You're working on the assumption that anyone can define a "hardcore" gamer. Most definitions I've seen were sketchy at best.

That about sums it all up.
Is it sad I could actually name more than half of the games/people on that pic.

No, I got around about the same too. It's a fun quiz that separates the men from the boys.

I think you meant to say "Need psychological help", comrade.

Or is that being redundant?

Personally I refuse to use the word hardcore, it just reeks of desperation.

"Oh, we are not like the other people who play games, we are much better, and we need to show that by calling ourselves HARDCORE! Because that is such an awesome word!"

Why can't we just call it gamer? Isn't that enough? I would never call a person who plays games once a month a gamer. Casual gamer maybe, but that doesn't mean there is a need for us to call ourselves hardcore, it just comes off as pathetic.

That said, there is also no need for us to have any kind of test, what good would it serve in the end? Why do we need to label everything?

No Kate Walker. That test fails miserably.

Also, VIVA PINATA! TEH HARDCOREZ!

think so :D also, you can still have a mundane job, a gf and friends and play WoW 10 hours a day :D
Agreed; I managed those in simulcast myself once.

But I got better.

There's no such thing as a hardcore gamer, it's just an old wives tale they use to scare the children.

But in all seriousness I've never enjoyed this ranking of gamers that seems to be so common nowadays, it's fine to classify gamers (Retro gamers, puzzle gamers etc) but when you contrast casual with hardcore you can see what I mean.
