Oh. I dig it. How old are you and your friend? The reason I ask is because I went through a phase like that too (and it'll probably pass). I still had blank tees, but I felt that I had to buy concert t-shirts when I went just to prove I cared about the music. I've since gotten away from that mentality but I still wear a lot of band t-shirts (mainly metal, obviously).

Honestly, the t-shirts I hate are those pre-faded pieces of shit.
16 and 15 respectively, which sounds younger when you come out and say it.

I'd say it's just a phase then. We're all trying to find our identity at those ages. But you know him better than I do, obviously, so I won't claim infallibility here.

Good luck w/ it, though.

"Wanna-be metal heads."

Have you seen the song list for this game? I think those guys know their metal.
I was talking about the audience mainly, yeah I'm pretty sure the designers knew what they were on about.

Definetly.

I'm getting it for my brother. He's like that, cept he CAN play guitar

I, meanwhile, shall wait for a Blues/Jazz version set in Louisiana-Land with a black guy in a snazzy suit
Good luck w/ that happening. I'd play that, though.

Allow me to clarify. This is the reason why I don't want the game. Is my supposition correct?

You're worried that people who like metal will play a game about metal?
I'm not WORRIED. Anyway I'm thinking about the people who like metal for really stupid reasons. Because they think it'll make them look cool.
Frankly, that's what struck me when you mentioned Guns'n'Roses as a band for posers.
Forgive me for being blunt, but that is a nonsensical elitist view. Guns'n'Roses are a band that an entire generation of hard rockers and metallers grew up with, providing catchy party anthems to get drunk to.

I've been into metal for 6 years now. I wear t-shirts. I usually(though not that much recently) like to be all the way up front when at concerts. I don't particularly like Guns'n'Roses, but I acknowledge their space in music history. Since when does really enjoying at immersing oneself in metal, mean you were a poser?

Brütal Legend is filled with references and jokes that caters to the people who actually know their heavy metal.

As for the game itself, it has it's flaws. But it's also very good in many areas, it has an awesome soundtrack(with some exceptions), and just has that cool feel to it.

EDIT: While I'm at it anyway... Just ignore any such terms as posers, "true", and elitism in your life. It's all about the music, and it's really not worth obsessing over how sincere someone else likes it.

Complain less. Play more.

Your argument is a lot like saying "I don't like Halo 3, because it appeals to all the wannabe douchebags that pretend to like Halo." Metal has become a broad term to refer to an expansive collection of similar musical styles, and the subculture that comes with them. Saying that one subgroup, such as "T-shirt wearers" are wannabes is as ineffectual as it is ignorant. The experience of metal is entirely up to the individual fan, and what one may call "true metal" is wannabe for another.

Metal is big enough for everyone. Relax, and make some space.

Um, because a certain type of person you don't like likes it (true with most games really) doesn't mean you shouldn't get it. That's just immature.

dude, you totally just described me.

...awesome.

Well, except in the fact that I actually like metal for it's artistic merit, and not to fit in. God knows that metal won't get you cool points at my school.

I feel like it's the kind of game that trys to appeal to the wannabe. You know, the kind of person who listens to Guns 'n Roses, and uses 'awesome' as a sort of all purpose adjective. The person that thinks that they might possibly start playing guitar, maybe, in the future, (so long as it's not to difficult anyway) but still considers themself an expert on the subject. Y'know, the person next to the stage at a concert wearing a slogan t-shirt. Yeah, a t-shirt wearer.

I kind of associate Brutal Legend with that kind of thing mainly cos of my friend, who shall remain nameless.
"It's like a dream world."
"I wish I was like the people in this game!"
"Isn't Ozzy Osbourne awesome?!" - This on the day after he bought the game.

Anyway, are my fears justified? Apologies for the rant, I got a bit carried away.

Did a metal fan steal your teddy as a child or something?

If you think that, well, that's fine, it's your opinion, but that doesn't make it correct. The reality is, this game is so loaded with injokes, cameo appearances and other references that it's not trying to appeal to the wannabe, it's geniunely for the metal fan. There is so much that a person who isn't familiar with metal simply won't get, things that they won't be able to enjoy unless they GET metal. For example, many of ozzy's sayings when you leave, if you've ever seen him in concert, well, you'll be able to wax nostalgic over, if not, you'll simply think he's just reading from a script (he obviously is, but the lines are taken directly from his live performances). OH YEAH, and the fucking soundtrack is fantastic. It's got everything from classics like "mr. crowley" and "in the black" to lesser known awesome like "murmaider" and "cathode ray sunshine". I believe mr. schafer knows his metal, if not, then jack black certainly does, and it comes across mightily. This game is meant to appeal mainly to the metal fan, but it also does it's fair share of trying to ease people into the genre. Right up until "her ghost in the fog" begins to play as you battle a boss and scares the shit out of anybody that has anything less then a true interest in metal.

AND YES, IT IS WORTH CORRECTING IF YOUR FRIEND IS IN ANY WAY INCORRECT. LETTING IT SLIDE IS THE KIND OF THINKING THAT HAS LEAD (american) CULTURE TO THE SAD AND NEGLECTED STATE IT'S IN NOW. My point is, if everybody becomes accepting of ridiculous behavior and poor taste, eventually, poor taste and stupidity become the norm, and those who rant against it, are ostracized. This in turn, leads to the eventual degradation of everything that requires some form of quality, whether it's music, video games, and even literature. Everything that was once good is left intellectually barren as to appeal to the more intellectually flawed elements in society, which by this point, is near everybody. If you like any band called LMFAO you are fucking wrong.

Err...It's my impression that metal hasn't been cool for a long long time, and if they like metal because they think it'll make them cool then I say LET THEM. I don't understand why every metal fan feels the need to challenge another fans devotion to the genre. The "I like metal more than you" mentality needs to stop

A. How can you be sure that someone's entire motivation for getting into a style of music/book/etc is solely for "coolness"?

B. Most metalheads I know are convinced that metal is the only good music out there, shouldn't you be reveling in the fact that they're at least listening to "good" music, no matter what the motivation? Trying something out because they think it will make them popular will expose them to new things, and that's never a bad thing.
THANK YOU! And last time I checked, hardcore metal heads don't think metal is cool, and they don't want it do be cool! Brutal Legend is entirely designed to put off haters, it's insular and unironic so it will only appeal to a limited base, just like metal music.
I don't want anything I do to be cool, because it attracts people who don't think about the stuff in the EXACT same way I think of them. Especially metal and gaming.
