So, for the past few days there have been a lot of news about a 12 year old who killed himself by jumping on a river, supposedly as a response to bullying. Apparently, he was a victim of frequent physical and verbal aggressions and even had to stay at the hospital. Also, the President of the Parent's Association claims that there are no recorded cases of bullying in the school, despite the student's mother having already gone to the school several times because of that issue.

As someone who got picked on at school, this hits a little too close to home. I never got anything so bad that I thought of suicide, and I wasn't beaten much, but I was insulted and mocked a lot. There was on guy in my class who seemed to have it in for me (well, to be fair, no one liked him much), and I remember one of the best memories I have is a friend of mine punching his nose. Nowadays, I have a huge hatred of bullies.

So, I'm interested in knowing what other Escapists think about bullying, and maybe get to know about some personal experiences (either about yourselves or people you know).

Bullying ... People stay "stand up to the bullies"...

I found nearly hitting one with a chair made everyone think i was a pysco. I had about two weeks of High Fives, and he never bothered me again.

Shame it was in my final year of high school, And not the first, May have meant i was higher in "the food chain".

I can relate. This ass haunted me for 3 years of Middle school. Last year, I became sick of it. Guidance didn't help, avoiding him didn't help. Nothing did; bastard was to rich to be touched. I really don't care if you personally attack me; insulting my friends will result in my wrath. He made that mistake. It resulted in me punching him in the nose hard enough to send him flying five feet off his chair on to ground, whimpering like a baby. He never came near me again. As for the teacher who watched me do it, she pretended it never happened. I was one of her favorites and she hated the other kid.

Also, engineering his break up with his girlfriend was ample payback.

I think nearly everyone can identify with being bullied. However, I was never bullied so much as shunned.

People need to just embrace who they are, and then the bullying just seems like a small annoyance.

Hey, me too!

OP: I was bullied so much I attempted suicide when I was 15.

I tried to kill one of the guys who was bullying me as well. That didn't work out so well. Eventually, last year and suffering from severe panic attacks and depression, my parents pulled me out of school so I could do the exams by myself. It's working pretty well.
oh boy...that sounds bad. Cant say that it ever happened to me.

We have a pretty tight community at my school, there might be douchebags but bullies get beat up till they move. We don't take shit from anybody.

Ahh, gotta love them bullies. My experiences from 3rd to 7th grade cemented a horrid personality in me which I've molded into my own, and they've caused me to mature much faster and higher than the rest of the people around me, but they were some hellish years.

Truly, I had the entirety of the school against me. Everyone made fun of me, joked about me, basically made my life a lovely little version of hell. Even the few people who I thought I could call my friends slowly turned on me, especially in 6th and 7th grade. I was punched a few times but the main bullying was mental.

It nearly broke me when I was told on a grey, cloudy day during gym class by a kid who I genuinely hated to kill myself. We were golfing during that period and so I had a lovely metal club in my hand. I desperately wanted to beat the bastards' head in, but I didn't. I almost regret that...

Truly, the one good thing about my parents' divorce is that I was able to move and live a much happier and more normal life. It's funny though, there were apparently no bullying issues in my school either...

I have been bullied my whole life. Mostly from people you would never expect to do something like that. It all but destroyed any confidence, self esteem or motivation to continue living I once had. So yeah....bully is some pretty serious stuff and people should stop it where they can.

I fucking hate it, I had gone through it a lot when I was still a little boy, I never did anything about it though, I had always just took the beating, I don't know why.

Hmm...you know, the most I have is two dicks. One calls me a "jew" and the other calls me a "nerd."

I always have to correct the second that I'm a geek, not a nerd.

I'm lucky enough to live in an area where bullying isn't a big problem. In fact, the whole Cliche "groups" thing about high school rarely exists. Everyone is pretty okay with everyone else, and people get along fine. The people that get bullied are mostly the kids who try and fit into the stereotype (and by bullied I mean mostly left out or occasionally teased) by doing things like hating jocks or being excessively weird.

I was always part of the upper more jockey/popular chain of things, so I can say bullying has never really been a problem to me. I may have been a tiny bit of a bully myself to some kids in the past, but was generally regarded as pretty mellowed out.

part of it is the way you react to being bullied.
You know, I really agree with this, I used to react violently and never got anything out of it. And by that, I mean that I just got mad and started shouting; if you're going to get angry, at least cause the other guy some pain.

That's awful! The thing I hated most about being picked on (compared to most of the stories here, I don't think I can call it "bullyed" anymore) was how the teachers never did much. At most they just had someone write an apology and tell me to ignore them. Which would fail.

Oh, I've got a link for the news story I mentioned, but it's in Portuguese. Still if anyone's interested, let me know.

I know of it, though in the end I didn't so much get depressed as much as I got angrier and angrier.
Ended up knocking one of the shits around with a wooden sword, things got a bit better after that.
I certainly blame the bullying for a good deal of my reluctance to interact with people.

It's always nice though, to know that there are people in the world who I can always consider to be worth less than the rest of my fellow humans.

I grabbed the chair, But didnt lift it. It was mainly me screaming obsenities in the middle of a silent (And Stunned class) which caused the effect. In the end i came to my senses, Put the chair back behind the desk, And sat back down.

The arsehole I exploded at was sent out, and i got off scot free!

I was bullied for the first three years or so of Secondary School. I perhaps didn't help myself much by not really caring whether I fitted in or not - so that made me an obvious target. The taunting was almost every lesson I had with my form, whereas the physical bullying only happened when the ring-leader got bored duing breaks...

I spent nearly everyday for three years hating nearly everyone in my class (I say that as there were one or two people who were okay with me). Funnily enough though, I don't hate them as I once did; I just look at where we've ended up in the years since we left, and chuckle to myself a little...

[sub]And my school was another that didn't have any bullying issues...[/sub]

I've been bullied all through elementary and in middle school, I just ignored them. I hardly notice the name-calling and verbal abuse since I grew up with it I was use to it (I didn't even know that was considered bulling til later). The annoying part is stealing my stuff or throwing my books off my desk. Teacher don't care about you being bullies and they don't care when you rip off their skin in a death grip either (long nails are great self defense). In high school everyone was mature enough to stop it.

Who would kill themselves over bullying? I hold my life over the priority of the bullies so if I was going to take a life it would be a school shooting instead.
