I've shot a Sig p226 and absolutely hated it. The trigger just felt awful, much too soft and floaty with too long a pull. Not sure if it was just the one I fired being poorly maintained by the range, or if all of them are like that, but I absolutely don't want a Sig.NinjaDeathSlap said:

I've tried quite a few glocks actually, the 17, the 20, the 22, and the 34. They're alright guns. They point well and I like their grips, but they aren't what I'm looking for. They feel too light for me, and I don't like the way they eject casings.exessmirror said:

back on topic: any CZ gun will be fine. i prefer the CZ 82 because i love Makarovs, but the 75 is probably their best because of how well it balances price and reliability.
i wouldn't buy an M9. any CZ is just as reliable at 2/3s the price.
next, you need to buy a Mosin. you can't beat a $100 rifle that fires 20 cent bullets.
out of those three, I'd take the CZ75, it's widely deployed, known for it's reliability, tons of options for modification even just addons, it has an underslung mounting rail for attatchments, everything from compensators to lights to laser sights can go on one of those badboys, from what I've heard it's a pretty easy gun to clean and maintain too.

Those are all three solid choices. After that, it will just come down to personal preference, what is available in your area, etc.

I'm a Ruger fanboy, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I'd have to second the .22 Ruger Mark III vote. If this really is a target plinking gun for weekend trips to the range, you're wasting your money on 9mm ammo. It's a solid defensive round, but if you're just shooting at paper, it's a bit of overkill.
That said, of the handful of people I know that have owned Berettas, I've never heard a single complaint about reliability, feel, or performance.

I really can't afford to judge anyone, though. Where I'm from, we tend to have a very "Gunz? LOLWHUT? These are for cops!" policy, which guarantees that your average Joe knows jack shit about them pew-pews and boom-booms.
If you really feel you need one for your personal protection then, jeeze, allow me to be impressed and possibly dismayed, seeing as this seems to imply your neighbourhood is very dodgy. I'm probably wrong, but hey. Sheltered Canadian white dude speaking, here.

I've never used the three you're torn between but I hear the Beretta is fantastic. However I have to root for my favorite every man gun: The Glock. Its an awesome choice for your first pistol if you ask me. I've always liked how they shoot and they are some of the most reliable pistols you'll ever find for the price. Almost all of them will come well under your price limit. I'd specifically recommend a 9mm variant. I use a 19(small hands) and I get some good groupings.
I'm guessing you live in a city, because in rural Canada there is a pretty high rate of firearm ownership and a very prevalent culture surrounding the shooting sports/hunting. I would say that handguns, while not nearly as common as rifles or shotguns, are far from being considered a rare possession. Any specifics you'd like to share about what you hated about the SIG? That should make proper suggestions much more worthwhile.

I should probably qualify all of this by saying I don't actually *own* any firearms (though I'm knowledgeable about them and I have plenty of experience at the range).

Granted, it's the only one of the three I've actually fired, but it's also the most commonly used, and therefor has a wide range of aftermarket and replacement parts. It's also very comfortable to hold (it's one of those guns that had a feel in the hand you just don't forget, if you understand me), and the two I've fired both had very comfortable actions (they were a bit less pop-y than some guns I've fires).
On a side note, have you looked into the Steyr M-series? I have virtually no experience with them, but as far as looks go they can't be beat
