I don't think this will pass. But if it does, there will be MASSIVE protest rallies in every capital city in the world with access to internet. We'd probably see one of the biggest protest movements since the civil rights and Hippie rallies, all calling for the demise of this treaty. Soon politicians would have to be facing "Overturning ACTA" as a promise while campaigning if they even want a chance to be elected.

And what's to stop this from becoming bigger? Already this is violating many nations' civil rights, so what's to stop those enforcing ACTA from adding more amendments onto the treaty to give them more control over the web and public as a whole?
wasn't anonymous suppose to rally against acta

O.T. all I have to say is don't we have more important things to worry about like the war or the economy can't the whole piracy on the web wait till after all that

May as well make breathing illegal too while their at it, as [assuming what's been said in this thread so far is correct], they're going to have two choices, either A: Arrest everyone with an internet connection, or B: Put this one up on the big wall of stupid laws that are completely impossible to enforce.

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100310/0425238499.shtml

in Europe (EU- thats every one in the EU) 663 voted against 18 for. It is not coming hurrah.

EDIT: A quote from one of the against party - "This Parliament will not sit back silently while the fundamental rights of millions of citizens are being negotiated away behind closed doors. We oppose any "legislation laundering" on an international level of what would be very difficult to get through most national legislatures or the European Parliament,"

I'm at work and thus too lazy to check all the posts thus far, so forgive me if I'm repeating someone.

A couple days ago there was a pretty long thread about the Declaration of war by "Anonymous" against the governments of the world that intend on signing it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.228417-ACTA-Vs-Anonymous?page=1

It covers a lot of what I read being said on this thread, at least on the first page.

I'd imagine it'll be a bit of a non issue. Mainly because the act, in its current wording, is almost totally unenforceable. By doing this, they'd force ISP's to shut down the accounts of at least 70% of Western internet users, which is just insane. There's no way America and other western nations, stalwarts of the free market as they are, would risk causing such a huge cash leak in the internet industry.

Now, I'm not saying don't be worried, or don't fight it, but I doubt this is the foretold end of the internet, just based on how deranged anyone would have to be to actually fully enforce it.
I agree with Fuburt on this.

I wouldn't go too far as to say that this is the "civil rights movement of the internet" or whatever, but this will be a big deal if this continues.

Where is the Republican party on this there is no way in hell they would let it pass
Um, Bush was demanding to be given access to everyone's private information when he was in office. Don't you remember how Google stood up and said, "Sorry, that goes against our mission statement of: Don't Be Evil."

Republicans are pro-business and about LESS government involvement so why would they take a stand against something like that? That is a Democrat thing. They go for civil rights and the person over big business. (At least that's what the Old Republicans would favor. If it's good for businesses it's good for everyone was pretty much the motto.)

Ah, difference between tax evasion (just not paying) and tax avoidance (claiming residency of Cayman Islands to avoid paying). The former is illegal, the latter is legal. Stupidly.
And predictably, the latter is what they all do.
(It's why I'm beginning to advocate a universal tax of 1% on everything)
Then the government can say "Fuck Hollywood" and not enforce any film copyrights until they agree to start paying again.
1: Can you imagine the uproar?
2: While Hollywood may only pay a pittance of what it should pay, it still probably pays in six or seven figures.
Basically, Hollywood holds all the aces :(
Yes but all the people who typically would side with hollywood would be pissed that they have to pay taxes and hollywood doesn't. And all the people who don't normally support hollywood well... lets just say they would be having a field day stealing all of hollywoods shit for the few months that the government chooses not to enforce copyright for the studios who refuse to pay.

Is it legal? No.

Is it Justice? yes.

Now if only we could find a way to dismantle the RIAA.
