So, I was doing my daily thinking exercises and started thinking about women as I generally do.
But more specifically, women on the battlefield. And even more specifically, why I haven't seen that many in games. Or any at all to think about it.

I like women, quite a lot. And if one were on the battlefield next to me in say.... Modern Warfare 2, I'd work my ass of to ensure she makes it to the other side of an ambush, and I might actually shed a tear if she got killed in some over dramatic story twisting back-stab-athon. Men are everywhere in games, I'd go so far as to call 99% of FPS games a venerable sausage-fest. Surely there are more females in war IRL. Not as much as men, obviously, but at least enough to fit into 1 or 2 COD missions, amirite?

So, can anybody tell me of some war/army or just any good realistic FPS that had women play a significant role, maybe even as the lead character. I'd specifically love a COD type game that's pretty realistic and show the horrors of war through the viewpoint of a female, or at least showing a female experiencing the horrors of war. Even a mod will do.

Suggestions please...

No, Alyx doesnt' count. She's nice. But not the sort of realistic I'm talking about. She's way too good at kicking ass, and doesn't die when she's littered with hot lead. The female pilot in COD4 came close, but I just got to save her butt, I want a chick next to me on the frontlines screaming commands, running for cover, getting her asses handed to her by commies, saving my ass from militia. You know what I mean?

EDIT: This is getting a bit out of hand. I would like to focus on women in video games. Not IRL. After doing some basic research (which I should have done early). I've learned many, often quite simple and basic, reasons why women aren't generally ideal for combat applications in real world situations. However, I still feel it's a bit of a stretch to exclude women from combat roles in realistic games because of these real world limitations.

*Fairly* sure that women aren't found on the frontlines, even in real life.

EDIT: Since I'm being called out on this a lot...

I was on about the British Army.

Direct quote from http://www.army.mod.uk/news/12823.aspx:

More than 70 percent of jobs in the Army are open to women (close combat roles are excluded)
Which is what I meant by frontline troops.

Umm, theres a woman in KZ2. I think she gets cutscene-killed though.

The woman in Goldeneye 64 was notorious for being the hardest thing to protect in any game ever. So maybe she ruined it for the rest.

Because whenever females are done in action games they are totally unrealistic, one dimensional and lame.

Women at war? That's so gotta be a nurse game (eg: trauma centre) or a tailor who makes gas masks or uniforms (Stitching Mama). Has potential, but not for hardcore gamers.

You sexist! http://www.alternet.org/world/21557/
There aren't many of them. But they are there. More than enough to have at least one of them feature in a video game.

I believe that the British Army uses females for frontline troops.

OP: It would make a game more interesting to see a more gender-balanced war game.
It would be more realistic, but it depends what country/whatever you are fighting for in said game.

Most characters in those kinds of action games are totally unrealistic, one dimensional and lame. The fact that they're female has nothing to do with it. The problem seems to be, that when females are included, they are only ever there as the exception and thus their character tends to be based around the fact that they are in fact female too much, which makes them more one-dimensional, when it shouldn't matter at all.

Call Of Duty 2, Russian campaign. You have female soldiers fighting with you all the time.
Thanks. I've never played COD2. Will check it out.

Did a bit of digging, because my *fairly* was based on the British Army (which was unfair really).

Well, how abour Meryl and Eva in MGS?

Meryl has her own squad in MGS4 and you fight together with her and her squad in one sequence. Shes is generally quite important character (atleast in MGS4), also you can play as her in multiplayer.

I'd imagine there would be couple of women at least in the "Special Forces" such as the SAS and the like. In fact, IRL the tank battalions in the Iranian (Or was it Israel) Army are famous for consisting of mostly women.

I would like to see women being represented more in FPS games. Hell, you could have a mission where you play a female soldier, are about to be tortured but then make a one (wo)man escape

But to be fair. They should keep it low key. OMG!! A GURL ON THE BATTLEFIELD is the last thing that should be on your and on the developer's mind.

Quoting Tony Stark:

Good god your a woman!... (embarrassed) I... I mean I thought of you as a soldier first... Isn't that what we were going for...

Thanks, I agree. I'm not just talking about gender balance either, but just to see the more emotional view of women as seen on the battlefield. But it needs to be realistic. And not have the chicks break down into tears when anybody is killed.

yea, at the start of that mission where you start in the backroom of that clothing store? she's the first to get killed... always (everytime in my game atleast, she runs out and gets smudged over the wall by a potatomasher...
