IRL? I dunno, maybe it would make all the guys act like super macho twats to impress them but that already happens.

I wouldn't mind seeing more women in FPS games, so long as they blend in. Like no cammo bikini in place of a bullet proof vest.

Well in the US Military women are not allowed to be on the frontlines because of a certain reason that visits every month.

Also, it would quiet interesting to see how players would react to female enemies in a realistic FPS like COD or O:Flashpoint.

Thanks, I agree. I'm not just talking about gender balance either, but just to see the more emotional view of women as seen on the battlefield. But it needs to be realistic. And not have the chicks break down into tears when anybody is killed.
Chances are, if they are on the frontlines in a modern army, they are mentally prepared for the horrors of war.
So unless everything goes to hell, or ther're some conscript for a developing nation, they wouldn't breakdown and cry.
As such, it would not make sense in a war game if they were trained and payed soldiers that broke down.

Female combatants are interesting... they seem to transfer the pain resistance given to them for purposes of birthing a child into resisting combat pains.

It's pretty awesome, from what I can tell.

Anyway, a lot of RPG(FPS)s seem to give people equal right to die in combat fighting orcs, monsters, whatever the setting has.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion, for instance.

Play Mass Effect. They have both a female grunt (Ashley Williams) and a dangerous Spy/Sec Ops officer (Miranda Lawson/Webb).

A female Captain Price voiced by Sigourney Weaver would be cool

Yeah, but females have always been a staple of games like Fallout, Oblivion, Mass Effect, etc which have living towns and landscapes. It would be weird not to have women in there. You also get to choose your character. It would be weird not to cater for female players.

Linear FPS games like COD, GOW, Halo are working on a 20 year old concept and it's still a rarity to see females taking part in a realistic role. Or at least as equals to males. let alone having a female protagonist.

Mass Effect is not realistic in the slightest. It's set in the future as well.
Also, it's an RPG, females are almost always portrayed as equals to males in RPGs. Not so much in FPS games.

A female Capt. Price you say... 'scuse me for a moment... *fap fap fap*

The pilot of the downed Blackhawk that you had to save in CoD4 was a woman, wasn't she?

Anyway, I suppose women are pretty uncommon on the front lines, both IRL and in games. They're much more likely in RPG's than FPS's anyway.

Probably because men and women aren't equal, militarily speaking. There are simply certain biological differences that make one more suited to specific tasks than the other. I'm not saying one is superior or anything, just that they are different, and not equal. It probably depends on the objective at hand which of the two can be considered superior. I'm not too well informed on said differences though, so take this more as idle pondering, rather than a definite statement.

Because fratboys would be offended if action girl in, say, Modern Warfare 2, was as good at murdering tons of dudes as they are.

They are.
A great deal of U.S. Military women complain that people think like you.
"Oh, she was probably only on base"
When in reality they usually apply for the heavy combat missions.
Due to generalizations of a female's combat abilities, you end up pissing off a woman who did as much work as the next guy.
So it is realistic to find women on the front-lines today and it is somewhat realistic to have found them back then. I remember a Russian sniping squadron comprised only of women, and they got the highest amount of sniping kills.

Kind a sexist there. Biologically, women are different. But I firmly believe they are capable, with the correct training and learning, to do anything a male can do. Unless it involves his penis, but I doubt there's any penis activities in the military. Unless... no wait, that doesn't count.

Ok, I accept that women can't serve on the frontlines of the US military, perhaps not any civilized military force. but I'd still like to see them in more roles. The COD4 rescue mission was awesome. but only a small taste of what women in war are capable of. We just save that chick, we don't see her bombing the shit out of insurgents with her chopper. Or doing anything much except being rescued by the men. We don't even get to see her die in the blast afterwards.

Tempted to edit that post since everyone is quoting it.

This is the response I made to the last person:

Did a bit of digging, because my *fairly* was based on the British Army (which was unfair really).

Direct quote from http://www.army.mod.uk/news/12823.aspx:

More than 70 percent of jobs in the Army are open to women (close combat roles are excluded)
So no, I'm not in the business of "pissing off women," I'm simply working on the knowledge of my own countries army - given that the British Army happens to be a pretty good one I don't think it's completely unfair to assume other "modern" armies operate in a similar manner.

Why? Because barring the Russkies in WWII (and that was nothing to do with feminist altruism, just a desperate need for anyone who could hold a gun)and possibly the Israeli's there aren't very many female front line troops. Plenty in support roles and a few combat pilots but apart from that it doesn't really happen that much.
Women do show up in the sneaky special forces/spy role in a few games (Cold Winter on PS2 and...um...that sony one, with the Helghast...can't remember the name).
