I don't hate steam, but I don't really like it either. Firstly, how hard is it to make a program that actually works!? Secondly, it REALLY, REALLY pisses me off when to play a game I have no choice but to buy it through steam/run it through steam. Way to go monopolize the industry you ........ yeah, don't really like that. As a general idea it's ok, just the implementation I don't really like.

I dont hate steam specifically.

I hate all forms of digital distribution when they are in place for no other reason than to fail miserably at preventing piracy.

Im not supporting piracy. I do denounce a system that promotes unneeded middleware that eats resources, acts as a system of advertisement, and fails to do the one thing that it is supposed to do.

How many "steam only" games are out that are already cracked and being pirated as we speak?

As for steam specifically, I am not impressed. Their biggest selling point is their deals and their library. However the way Im seeing it, most of their deals are either very out of date games, or games that are just plain bad. In the occasion a good game is considered a deal its almost always one that I have already played and have no ambition to play again, much less pay for again.

Why do you hate Steam? I see this hatred for Steam quite a bit and being not as much of an avid Pc gamer as I should be, I was curious as to why you hate Steam.

Also if you do not hate and/or dislike Steam please refrain from answering.
-thank you.

I enjoy actually owning my games with steam technically there not myn i hate that. Plus am a collector i enjoy my 100$ collectors editions i enjoy buying 2 of my favorite games 1 sealed and 1 i can play. I like displaying all my game boxes all over my appartment so am always in a warm ebrace of my passion. Its better then just a bunch of digital downloads we dont really own.

The offline mode is a joke. What kind of fucking offline mode needs to connect to the internet to start offline.

Yes, to get Steam in offline mode, it must first connect to the internet. THAT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF AN OFFLINE MODE!!

Also, why the hell does steam default to downloading the full game when you try to install it from the disk? With Civ5 I had to open up the disk files and run the setup manually. I didn't buy the physical copy to download the damn game you idiots!
This is my main gripe with it. Lately my internets been shutting off randomly too(stupid wireless connection) so this has been bugging me more and more. I find it annoying that I can't play games that don't even need to connect to the internet to play(single player games), but I need to be connected to play because of Steam. It's especially annoying with games I have a physical copy of.

I hate steam because it always screws with me and my PC. Either when I launch it or exit from a game, it'll take forever to open/close, and then to add insult to injury, it'll scramble up all my icons on my desktop.

I also hate when theres a sale and no one botheres to tell me about it D:

some reason it took me about 2 weeks to download dragon age origins.... no idea what the problem was and ive never experienced it again. apart from that i love steam, $5-10 games that are some of the best old games ever made (KOTOR!!!!!) its a great change to the way video games are sold and distributed. I havent bought a boxed game in years which makes me happy because i hate the big retailers.
Buying from Steam is about the equivalent of buying from Amazon. Just because its solely online doesn't make it a big retailer.

I don't know if I count because I don't hate Steam. I just won't use it.

I guess my peeves would be:

It's a draconian form of DRM. Even if you buy the disc, you have to install Steam.

If it ends, so does my access to the games that I bought. Yes, I know Gabe Newell said that, if Steam ever goes under, that they will release a patch that will free the games that you purchased. To date, this claim has not been proven. Being former IT, I can guarantee that people will be too busy looking for jobs to bother writing that patch.

It forces updates. The game that I bought a physical copy of was Sin: Episodes. I liked it well enough but a number of people who couldn't grasp "don't run straight at the people with miniguns" bawwed about how difficult that section was. Steam released a patch to remove the teeth out of that encounter. Sometimes I don't like later updates to a game and I would prefer to patch to a level that does not create issues. GalCiv1 and UT2K4 come to mind. (Yes, not patching to the highest level creates the tradeoff of not being able to play online. I'm willing to make that tradeoff for certain games.)

That would about cover the major issues. To date, I have only bought two games which require Steam: Sin Episodes and Portal. Other than that, I've avoided it like the plague. Sometimes, that's a problem such as Supreme Commander 2 but I'm willing to make that sacrifice to avoid Steam.

So it isn't so much a "hate" so much as I just won't use it.

Steam is my favourite program on my computer (apart from Chrome probably.)
It's fantastic. I get the game updates and bug fixes automatically.
I can transfer games to new computers.
I can chat in-game, I can browse the web in-game.
The games are cheap (in AUS) as all hell.

Yeah, the only gripe I have with it is if I do get capped it takes a million years to start. Lesson learned: don't get capped.
And offline mode sometimes doesn't allow you to start games. But after the latest offline mode fix it hasn't played up on me and works fantastically :D

A long as Gabe is still in charge, Steam's monopoly is going to be a good thing. If/when Gabe is not in charge, then we're absolutely boned.

Say goodbye to logical, reasonable choices with regards to game development at Valve and hello to a Kottick clone (unless Doug Lombardi gets in).

they hate steam because its popular and does what their precious XBL/PSN does by 100x better. most of the time they don't explain WHY they hate it like that guy on 2k's forum when he didn't know Civ V was steam-only. he calls it a parasite and a POS program. they fear progress.
You need to hush. I'm a console player and while I don't have XBL myself, I've played it with others. Steam is different to XBL in the tiny detail and COMPLETELY the same in the big picture. It's not "fearing progress". Most people haven't used it enough to get past the things they hate. You're doing nothing to make people like you by making console fans sound like idiots. It's been done before, and it's not funny. It just makes you sound like an idiot. Ironic, eh?

Anyway,

OT: I don't hate Steam. In fact, I quite enjoy it. Or, I did. Suddenly Steam has made a few "improvements" which make it a lot less pleasant to use. Like the tabbed chat. If tabbed chat was implemented during the original beta of the new UI, I would have given so much nega-feedback. Gabe would have cried. It doesn't work for Steam.

There are a few other niggles which make it worse to use, but over-all, it's a good system. Most people hate it because they bought a game IRL and were forced to download/install Steam as a bi-product. I can see why they'd hate it.

I know a friend who USED to hate steam. He hated it because the UI was punishingly slow on his compy...it would take maybe 4 minutes to load the Games Library.

Then Valve did that kooky thing they do where they listen to fan's complaints, and released the new UI. My friend now no longer hates Steam, but, as he says, is 'still trying, really hard'. o.0

It's not that I hate Steam, but I had a bad first experience that has resulted in me not using it again.

More specifically, the game I had purchased from them kept crashing on start-up and Steam, despite having an elaborate support section, provided no help beyond "Ask the developers, not us." I purchased the same game from a different source and discovered the problem (incompatible drivers) during the setup stage, a stage I did not receive as a result of Steam's particular installation process.

My issue with steam is that it still refuses to work with my mic. Every other program works, but steam is all white noise, I can't even make out my own voice. Other than that I don't hold too much hate.

It is annoying having to run steam for Civ V even though I bought the physical CD....

I used to hate it because it was very tempermental and wouldn't download anything. It would always get stuck at 99%. Now I have better internet, and I switched my download server from chicago to somewhere in france. It works now....huh.

But now I love it basically because it's the equvilent of Xbox LIVE without the fee and you can connect with friends easily. The only thing that displeases me right now is that it is really slow to start.

That link. I just...
Damnit. Why are the prices so different? Also, in the Aus Steam store the prices are still in USD so...
Duck that.

So yeah, I want to get Civilisation 5, then i looked at the difference in price... No. Just no. Why are games so expensive in Aus?

Isn't a "Steam hater" like.. a reality oxymoron? o_O

The only time I've been dissatisfied with Steam is when (and still to date) my Global Agenda install will not function. Otherwise, it's been the perfect source of PC gaming at cheap prices and bundles.

Most things I would say have been said, possibly this too. But...

In Australia, Dead Rising 2 PC is 100$. On Steam It's half-that. It's enough to be worth every bit of trouble that I might encounter. (I usually don't anyway)
