People how use 'gay' as a pejorative are presumably think that being gay has something inherently wrong with it. Otherwise why would they use it as a pejorative?
I hardly think "Fag" is used as an insult mainly for gays anymore. Just for someone that is particularly annoying. So yeah, I'll go and call someone a ****** if they annoy me in game. As for Gay though, well...Meh. You either are or you aren't. If someone calls you it, it shouldn't bother you. That is unless they go further and make it more personal.
The fact is that gay is an insult nowadays and there's nothing anybody can do about it. I can understand that gay people find it offensive when it's used like that but it doesn't really mean homosexual anymore (when being used as an insult). Sure, it used to be used by homophobes but now it's just used by anybody as a generic insult. Words evolve like that. For instance, remember when gay used to mean happy?
Different pejoratives have different histories and therefore meanings. Pussy for example was generally used to describe anything feminine during the early modern period, though it implied the sexual. The term narrowed to mean vagina for the most part now days (oh, and cat). The term Pussy as an insult is generally meant to mean that someone is effeminate and weak (basically the ye olde view of women). The word gay became a pejorative because it meant homosexual, in the same way as "homo" or "poof". The idea being that there was something wrong with being homosexual.Spot1990 said:
