I've always had a bone to pick with anime. I hate the melodrama, I hate the guttural gasps every freakin' character makes every time something happens, and I hate the cutsie wootsie characters that think they are funny because they speak like 12 year olds.

And yet I still watch them. For my recommendation, I think I'll just leave this here.

I have 4 recommendations for you:

Samurai Champloo
Elfen Lied
Fullmetal Alchemist
Bleach

I have yet to run into someone who doesn't like at least one of these anime, so one of these should suit your needs. I personally recommend Bleach out of the ones I listed, cause the action is awesome and once the story starts to pick up it just takes off really well.

The guy who directed Perfect Blue did a show called Paranoia Agent, which is a little depressing but has some great single episodes, and a movie called Paprika, which is weird but amazing.
Paprika, fucking hell that was a great movie up until the stream I was watching it on broke down and we all missed the ending...

OT: Ok,because I am sick and fucking tired of telling people "Watch these because they are good!"
I am just going to use Youtube to do it.

No two episodes here, the series is only 6 episodes long!

and finally the movie suggestion:

I'm not too experienced in anime watching, but any other suggestions I could tell you someone else already suggested so watch these and decide for yourself if you like them or not.

Boom. Generic Response.

Every time on these threads, people will put the anime they especially enjoyed. I feel this is too personal. Too subjective.

So you know what? Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can get his own damn fish so he never has to ask anyone for their fish.

Yum. Fish.
This ain't my first time at the rodeo.

Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo are fantastic series. Anyone who is a fan of anime can vouch for at least one of them, if not all.
Since you liked Perfect Blue, try watching some of Satoshi Kon's other movies like Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika.
And anything by Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli.

He said he doesn't like weird anime. This stuff is as weird as it can get, especially FLCL which doesn't even have a plot.

Rurouni Kenshin an awesome show about a Samurai who is trying to live a peaceful life at a dojo has alot of really cool fights and some pretty good characters.

Durarara alot of mystery in this one you can't really tell where it's going till the last 3 episodes and it does an amazing job telling the story of the main characters.

Darker than Black (season 1 is amazing season 2 changes alot) It sort of reminds me of X-Men or something along the lines except that all the people that gained powers have lost their emotions and are basically used by corporations as killing machines. Absolutely amazing fights in it plus a pretty interesting story (season 2 and the short 4 episodes between 1 and 2 are only worth watching if you enjoyed the story)

Berserk has a medieval fantasy setting very good story with amazing fight scenes they don't hold back on the whole people getting killed thing. If you decide to watch it I STRONGLY RECOMMEND STARTING ON EPISODE 2 then when you finish go back and watch episode 1.

Eden of the East just really good story telling no real fights or anything just all about the story and I thoroughly enjoy it.

All of these are available to watch for free online at animefreak.tv I believe all of them have english dub I know all are fansubbed there

Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories.

It's one of the most unanime-like animes you'll ever see. Created by some of the biggest names in the industry, like Koji Morimoto (animation director: Akira), Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika), and Katsuhiro Otomo himself.

If this doesn't win you over, nothing will.

Either I missed it, or I did not see one person recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. Shame. :/
Regardless, definitely worth checking out. :D

Code Geass is my all around favorite show across any genre. This show is similar to death note in that it focuses mainly on one intelligent character who is rising to take control of the world. Code Geass will blow you away.

Thus, not reading the whole topic has been my downfall once more.
Well then I guess I'm out of here,I've not really seen many "sane" anime, unless Code Geass counts.

First I'm not the greatest fan of animes, mostly because of the art styles, but also because of the sometimes bat-shit weirdness.
Its hard to judge what you'd call "weird" since i like this stuff im used to it but from your post id also say darker than black like some other people above me.

I'm a huge Naruto fan personally. The characterization is just phenomenal, you end up knowing almost every aspect of everyone's personality and the fighting is pretty awesome. At least better than DBZ's standard 2 episode charge up for a screen obscuring blast of cosmic light (THAT IS NOT GOOD ACTION!). Part 1 is pretty good but when you get to Shippuden it just blows part 1 out of the water.

If you liked the Ghost in the Shell films, you should check out Ghost Hound. It was also written by Masamune Shirow (who wrote the manga the first film was based on). And it's directed by the guy who directed Kino's Journey and Serial Experiments Lain, which are both really good. I really don't know how to describe it in a way that wouldn't make it seem like less than it is, but it's got lots of elements of psychology, philosophy, and even some things like quantum physics in it.
