Paprika, fucking hell that was a great movie up until the stream I was watching it on broke down and we all missed the ending...

OT: Ok,because I am sick and fucking tired of telling people "Watch these because they are good!"
I am just going to use Youtube to do it.

[youtubeFETrNYaRuc8]

No two episodes here, the series is only 6 episodes long!

and finally the movie suggestion:
Awwwww the videos won't work. I hate the UK!

OT: I've got a few recommendations here, just take a random pick and then watch the first few episodes to see if you like it or not

Cowboy Bebop
Hellsing Ultimate
Soul Eater
Elfen Lied
Desert Punk
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Black Lagoon
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Baccano!

I know I'm going to regret this but...
Can anyone recommend me an Anime?

First I'm not the greatest fan of animes, mostly because of the art styles, but also because of the sometimes bat-shit weirdness.
Yet I have seen some very good ones, that managed to be amazing enough to make me wonder what else I might be missing?

Then I ask around some friends, specifiably telling what I've liked before only to wound up watching some effeminate boy whining about his high-school crush with his random pikachu side-kick and, oh yeah giant Mechas everywhere :(

Anyway this is what I?ve seen that I liked:

Best series I've seen so far would be Dark Note up until the middle, then it went down hill fast!
Also Hellsing was pretty decent.
From movies I loved the two Ghost & the Shell films, Akira and the two Vampire Hunter D.
Perfect Blue was amazing, also Whisper of the Heart and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Do you mean Death Note, not dark note?

I'm not an animie fan at all but I finally caved and started reading, then watching, Death Note, and thought it was brilliant.

I'm around the middle of the books, dont want to watch till i've read, and I personally think its going a little downhill as well. The whole thing with that corporation getting the note is a bit 'meh'. Also, please dont tell me about anything beyond that! NO SPOILERS! :p

EDIT: Im not picking at your spelling, i genuinely dont know if you meant death note or something differernt. If something differrent, check out death note :)
Hah, had no idea I misspeled it, thanks :D
And if you're talking about the Yotsuba Corporation, don't worry things arent so bad yet.
There are still a few clever suprises in store and it will pick up again :p
Seems the manga is really close to the anime so I won't say anything more.

that girl has big ass anime eyes but i am sure i seen bigger... then again maybe not. yeah that all i got. i may consider watching; i proffer action anime's but i could try it anyway. and really it will make me cry... that's hard to believe.
If you don't believe me, watch it. All the way through, Clannad and Clannad: After Story; none of that "I watched two episodes and it didn't make me cry" crap; obviously the crying will come from certain events (specifically in After Story) that transpire after you know and love the characters. That's how it works. So by all means, watch it and send me a message when the tears are falling freely. :p

And it will make you cry. Maybe not the first show, Clannad, but its sequel series/season, After Story, will absolutely without a doubt bring the tears. If you do not cry, you have no soul.

B) If the Fuko arch, itself, doesn't move you... you have no soul.

Based on your examples I could recommend you these (too lazy to write out a description for each one, though :p ):
Monster
Jin-Roh
5 centimeters per second
The Place Promised In Our Early Days
Paprika
Black Lagoon
Noir
Madlax
Studio Ghibli's stuff

The Place Promised has sci-fi elements, Paprika is crazier version of Inception and Madlax has some supernatural stuff going on and Ghibli's works are mostly fantasy but apart from that these are all realistic anime without any "weird" stuff.

Some sites which could help you in researching anime:
http://www.anime-planet.com
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com
Half of those are excellent suggestions from my own personal experience. The other half I either disagree or have not seen. Will you be my friend ♥

To add to his list, I'd definitely suggest Voices of a Distant Star...

Also... I'm going to continue my list from earlier

Jin-Roh
Crest/banner of the Stars
Clannad
5 centimeters per second
The Place Promised In Our Early Days
Voices of a Distant Star
Great Teacher Onizuka
Neon Genesis Evangelion, followed by The Rebuild of Evangelion
The original Appleseed. (If's it's CGI, put it down and walk away)
The World Only God Knows
Break Blade
Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple
Castle in the Sky
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Slayers
Spice and Wolf
The Familiar Of Zero
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I feel like I'm forgetting some real classics... but as it goes... That's a fairly strong line up in quality anime.

... And barring all that... go read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher...

- Rounoni Kenshin Reminiscence OVA. It's great and only lasts for 2 hours. Can't go wrong with it.
- Trigun is also a great choice, funny as hell first half and then becomes more and more serious. Rabu ando piiiiis!!!
- Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime of all times, but the subject is quite heavy and it gets really really sick in the end. It's a mecha story, but also the biggest mindfuck in history. Every single character in that anime is mad, love it. They're also remaking it into movies, so good choice if you want to see great graphics.
- Last Exile has splendid graphics and design and a simple story. The graphics style is far from the normal ANIKI anime, so its easy to feel different from your fat otaku neighbor ;)
- Full Metal Alchemist, the original series, becomes weird at some point but rallies with a superb part just before the end. A splendid choice.
- Naruto, I'm guessing you've seen it already, but if not, the first 100 episodes of the original series are really really good.
- Ghost In The Shell series 1, better than both movies put together, the finale is an intellectual orgasm
- Full Metal Panic Fumoffu: downright the best parody you'll come across. Don't worry about the plot but be careful not to drink soda while watching it, you'll paint your walls with mucus. Some episodes, like the Bath and the Rugby episodes will leave you with stomach ache from so much laughter.
- Elfen Lied, as stated before, we love it for a reason, but I have to say, no other anime has so much sexual abuse as this one at its core. Boring first 5 episodes, great from then on.
- Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, possibly the best romance anime you can find, mainly because the protagonists have sex within the first 2 episodes and it's overall more mature than Demi Moore. Watch it with your partner and don't forget the tissues.
- 5 centimeters per second: a short movie, one hour long, hope you still have those tissues.
- Most Studio Ghibli's movies: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Totoro, Laputa Caste in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, but the best choice to start with and impress your parents is Grave of the Fireflies. And bring more tissues, but this time for real, cause you are going to cry, a lot!
- Berserk, the best story ever told. Although... the animation was quite bad, you might want to wait for the new release starting in 2012. Also take a look at the manga, it's the most violent one I've seen yet, superbly drawn.
- Chobits is also great, but you're better off reading the manga, as they cute-messed the ending in the anime. If you think you know where the story is going after the first episode (volume), you're BADLY mistaking :) Splendid story, splendid idea.
- Cowboy Beebop: lots of fillers, but possibly the best anime ever made. Superb design, superb main characters, some of the episodes are jaw-smackingly good. The ending was just... pure poetry.
- Monster: 70 or so episodes featuring the best police thriller you can find. It's quite similar to Death Note so you'll feel right at home. Make time to see it cause you will always want to see the next episode :)
- Jin-Roh, The Wolf Brigade: great movie, you'll instantly fall in love with those minigun wielding red eyes armor suit (wow, long description) policemen.

Guess that's enough for now, happy hunting.

Haven't watched the movie but from what I know it's like a shorter version of the series with a different ending. Anyone who knows better is free to correct me.

Watch the TV series then the sequel, After Story.

Disregard the movie all together.

Make sure you watch the Ghost In The Shell series, it's really good. Other than that, I would personally recommend Fullmetal Alchemist (both the 2003 series and Brotherhood). They're both incredible series.

Also, to the person who said Jin-Roh earlier - did you genuinely like that movie? It was one of the worst things I've ever had the misfortune of spending time watching. Everyone to their own, I guess.

NO. NO NO NO.

Okay, think of the worst filmic adaptation you've ever seen. Eragon, Dune, The Last Airbender, what have you. This is that bad. This might even be worse.

Both the film and the series are adaptations of a visual novel. The series takes its time to develop things and does to splendidly. The film, on the other hand, literally takes one of the most important and emotional events of the story and skips past it to a few years later, having the protagonist simply narrate it simply in retrospect within like 30 seconds. It's bad. Watch the anime. If you have to watch the movie, watch it after, but absolutely do not do so before the series. You'll thank me.

In short, yeah. What he said. Sorry, the series is my favorite anime and I also love the visual novel, so the movie is a bit of a soft spot for me. It was bad.

Also, I'm going to be one of the few and say Naruto is good. The filler sucks, yes, but you can look up which episodes are filler and skip them if you hate it so much. It may take a little while to get really good, but it does get really, really good.

Also, it's not anime, but watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. The incredible show that the crappy movie was based on. It's truly amazing.

Well, it's actually kind of challenging thinking of a good anime with the stipulation of it not being overly weird...I'll recommend a few from a few different genres:

Comedy - School Rumble, bit of weirdness but pretty funny
Romance - Clannad, only the faintest hint of weirdness
Mecha - Macross Frontier, pretty straightforward, actually...but IN SPACE and with a lot of emphasis on music. It can get kinda cheesy though.
Modern(ish) - Library War, also pretty straightforward, with guns, if you're willing to forgive the slightly absurd premise.

That's about all I can recommend at the moment...if you feel like going out on a limb then "To Aru Majutsu no Index" (A Certain Magical Index) is one of my absolute favorites...

Good hunting.

I'm gonna say...

-Elfen lied: if you want to be horrified/disgusted/occasionally laugh
-Air: If you want to cry... multiple times!!!
-Code Geass: If you want a very well rounded anime...
and just because...
-Highschool of the Dead- If you want a (surprisingly) good zombie anime with lots (and I mean LOTS) of fanservice...

...seriously, watch the first 5 minutes of the first episode and you'll be like "WOOOOAH!!!...WHAAA???"
