I know I'm going to regret this but...
Can anyone recommend me an Anime?

First I'm not the greatest fan of animes, mostly because of the art styles, but also because of the sometimes bat-shit weirdness.
Yet I have seen some very good ones, that managed to be amazing enough to make me wonder what else I might be missing?

Then I ask around some friends, specifiably telling what I've liked before only to wound up watching some effeminate boy whining about his high-school crush with his random pikachu side-kick and, oh yeah giant Mechas everywhere :(

Anyway this is what I?ve seen that I liked:

Best series I've seen so far would be Death Note up until the middle, then it went down hill fast!
Also Hellsing was pretty decent.
From movies I loved the two Ghost & the Shell films, Akira and the two Vampire Hunter D.
Perfect Blue was amazing, also Whisper of the Heart and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

EDIT: Cheers to @SvenBTB, @deathbydeath and @hinataxemnas, thanks for the Claymore recommendation :)

I guess, check out Darker Than Black if you like things like X Men.

And maybe Eureka Seven if you're into mechs and a lot of character development.

I believe Gurren Lagaan is still free to watch on Hulu. So go watch that. Right. Now. Seriously. You will NOT regret watching that anime. So just sit back and get ready to get blown away.

And if you want an example of a GOOD high school romance anime, try ToraDora. It's the only decent one I have seen so far, and it is amazing. The characters are engaging and authentic rather than just annoying archetypes, and it never gets dull.

And if you like gangs, mythical creatures, and superhumans in your mystery anime, look no further than Durarara. Seriously, this one's got everything plus the kitchen sink and it is superb in every way.

If you liked the Ghost in the Shell movies, you might want to check out the series, which is called "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" (and the third movie, which is a sequel to the series).

Some other titles I'd recommend are (in no particular order): Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Outlaw Star, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Monster, Trinity Blood, Blood+, Wolf's Rain, and Kino's Journey.

Also, if you don't mind stuff geared toward a younger audience, I'd say pretty much anything by Hayao Miyazaki. The man is like the Walt Disney of Japan.

If you watched Hellsing, go back and watch the OVA series. It starts back at the beginning but goes a totally different direction and is WAY better than the original anime. With the one's you said you liked, I'd go for Ergo Proxy.

Gunbuster it is about mechs but isn't about some whiny teenager.
also anything from Mobile Suit Gundam.

Elfen Lied if you like Ghost in shell.

I myself like romance and ecchi. It's nice and slow paced for me. I don't like much action... If an anime is going to have action, it must be over, over, over the top.

Crest/Banner of the Stars is one of the best epic sci-fi operas I've seen.

I recently found an anime called Claymore. Its about demons, magic, the usual. Moderate character development, good cinematics, mostly solid story line; not bad

I would like to recommend Monster and 20th Century Boys. More serious and realistic than most anime. Art style is really good and the story doesn't decline (that's for Monster, haven't read through 20th Century Boys yet).

PS: I'm reading manga but i guess there is anime of it too.

Cowboy BeBop is a damn good series (regardless of medium) and well worth a shot. It's got good character development, action, drama and music. And it's fairly lacking in the whole 'batshit weirdness'(Pikachu-like sidekicks included) and giant mechs that are so prevalent in anime.
And there's also Black Lagoon, which is set in modern-times (somewhere around the late nineties to mid/late '00's). Though I will say that Black Lagoon has some weird parts and plenty of 'batshit-crazy awesome' characters and moments.

For a movie watch Tekkonkinkreet. It's great stuff.
I just started watching the series Samurai 7, and I like it. It's a steampunk/fantasy retelling of the classic movie Seven Samurai.

An anime that is not about effeminate boys going after girls woohoo!... Watch Toaru Majutsu no Index/(Railgun) series extremist magicians vs. extremist psychics focusing around a guy who after acouple of episodes loses his memory, making seem sorta realistic in the actual reations department.
