Can people not enjoy movies anymore?

Ok, so i went to see Dark Knight Rises last night and...i fucking loved it. It was a good conclusion to the saga and i legitamately did not see the twists and turns coming, also with an epic score, this is just my new favourite movie.

So, opinions aside, it upset me that so many people on the internet are complaining about the smallest details, y'know, the nit-picking and the complaining of unrealistic situations. C'mon, really? you are upset about unrealistic bits and pieces in a film that was inspired by a comic book where a guy dresses as a bat and fights crime?

I admit, there would be a few things i would change up in the film but not to the point that i would despise it,rant and rave about it because i was too busy having a damn good time.

TL;DR, Enjoy your movies guys (and hell, even games) sure there is some shit out there, but really just enjoy yourself and think of entertainment as an experience and not something to critique.

The majority liked Dark Knight Rises. On Rotten Tomatoes it has something like an 85% rating, and that seems to be about the percentage of people I've encountered that liked it. It's just that the minority that doesn't like a film these days is much more vocal. And the reason they're vocal - because so many other people liked it!

I'm okay with that, with DKR most of the complaints I've heard are totally valid. It just comes down to whether or not they can push you to dislike the movie.

Batman was sort of the only superhero franchise I could sort of watch as it was more 'realistic' than others, but I think now maybe my ability to suspend disbelief isn't what it once was. Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical. I barely consume any fiction at all anymore.

The flaws that might not mean much to you can bother others. I know I can't help but get really technical about films because of all my training. Things bother me a lot when I watch movies things that most people wouldn't even notice but these small things are the difference between a good movie(7-8/10) and a great movie(9-10/10).

You got to keep in mind a good reviewer will review a movie completely objectively and solely on the quality of the product but people don't like things objectively because everyone has different tastes. That is why a movie can be utter trash but still have lots of people that love it.

Basically people need to know the difference between quality and preference and know that it is ok to not like something that is great or like something that is terrible just enjoy what you like.

I tend to just turn off and go on the rollercoaster ride. Heck, I enjoyed the end of Watchmen despite how upset the fans of the comic were. I read the comic and honestly I thought the ending was more plausible for a big screen film. Nobody else would have got it.

I do my best to avoid any site regarding films unless it's a silver screen title. Everybody is a critic or the next undiscovered yet brilliant director.

That isn't really an unpopular opinion, in fact its held by the majority at large in regard to movies.

Why would anyone's negative opinion "upset" you? Perhaps your overwhelmingly positive feelings towards the movie isn't as positive as you think? Don't get so emotionally involved in things if you are unwilling to accept discussion or dissension towards your favorite thing.

I went in expecting the movie to be good, and it was much worse than I was expecting. I may express this opinion within the channels where discussion might be heard such as between friends and forum posts such as this. If you're willing to discuss the movie on its merits, then GREAT! Perhaps we may have a more rounded opinion then we did before. Uncomfortable with the sole basis my opinion is NEGATIVE is not conducive to discussion, and I don't care. Get over it, the world is a big place.

I think Yatzee said it best, and to paraphrase: if you really like something what other people think should be inconsequential, unless their criticisms are causing a niggling thought in the back of your head you didn't like something as much as you've tried to convince yourself you did.

I am so goddamn sick and tired of people trying to tell me "oh you shouldn't actually think about what you're watching; you should just enjoy it because something is on the screen". Discussing movies, and picking them apart, is something I enjoy and how dare you even suggest it's something people should not do. That's just really... Wow...

Why can't people enjoy films? Well it's more the internet you're talking about here and it's because the some of the denizens of the internet need shit to function and thus they try to convince themselves things are shit in order to keep going. The downside is that the reason they need the shit power is so they can write about how shit they thought something was on the internet and when other people agree with the persons claims of shit his shit capacitors increase in power giving them even more shit.

Also glad to here Dark Knight Rises id good as I'm going to see it in around 3 hours and I was getting worried...

I loved it I've also really enjoyed The Avengers, and, come to think of it, a lot of movies I've watched recently. The only one I've seen recently and really didn't like is This Means War, which was horrendous. On the whole, either I'm getting more easily impressed, or movies are getting better.

I have a really hard time enjoying movies now. I can still like comedies but that is about it, actual movies just bore me for the most part. I would prefer to read a book, play video games or watch anime instead as I enjoy these much more.

I don't know why but I can actually enjoy anime most of the time yet movies bore the hell out of me.

Right off the bat, I haven't seen the movie yet, but there is a part in your post that bothered me a bit.

The source material is no excuse for plot holes, continuity errors or otherwise cracks in the narrative.

Again, haven't seen the movie yet, don't know what those flaws are precisely.
But he source material is never an excuse to muck things up.

I'm going to see Dark Knight Rises in a few hours so let me turn back the clock a few weeks and talk about The Amazing Spider-Man. I would have loved this movie if I was a kid and didn't know as much about the Spider-Man mythos but now that I'm a bit older and know some back story I couldn't help but to call foul on some of the bits from the latest movie. That being said though, all of the stupid, boring stuff that I didn't like about Amazing Spider-Man I can still enjoy. If I'm in a movie that I can't really get behind I take mental notes on what I could possibly be riffing which is something I plan on doing, I swear to God! (the more I talk about making my own riff-tracks to less likely it is that I'm actually going to do it...)

edit: After having watched Dark Knight Rises...I didn't like it. The ending just seemed like a cop-out that went against the message the other films were trying to hammer in (in a way). I also had a lot of trouble understanding Bane speaking but then I'm also one of those people who can't understand people during a phone conversation. I liked Catwoman though, she was like Black Widow only with far fewer action scenes. I also liked the bit where Bane was cos-playing Red Hood.

I still enjoy films, but I also see the faults in them. No film is perfect, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them.

DKR had a lot of faults, as I have expressed on a different thread, but it was still great. The reason why so much has popped up about this is because of the massive build up. Nolan released three fantastic films, so naturally, due to all the hype, people are going to notice all the little faults.

It's the same for any art form, I think. Films, music, games etc. It will always get criticised. That's just how it is. If we sat down and watched something with no opinion...what's the point? You can still thoroughly enjoy a film and criticise it, as I have with Batman.

Suspension of Disbelief (being able to believe something despite it being unrealistic...i.e. Spiderman getting bitten by a magic spider and becoming...well...Spiderman) will only stretch so far, and for some point, it stretches so far as to break. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know what "unrealistic" things happen in it. But being based on a comic book or not, some things are just too far out-there to really buy into.

I'll go to another comic-book-based movie example: Dare Devil. Now, I know DD got his powers by having chemicals splashed on his eyes, blinding him, but giving him super sonar hearing. That's all fine and dandy, makes sense even when you use comic-book logic.

Soooooooooooo how does getting splashed in the face with chemicals that blind you also suddenly turn you into a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon martial artist capable of toe-tap jumpin your way up a 5 story building? Being able to leap 20 feet into the air? That comic-book logic I can't follow because the seemmingly super-power has nothing to do with the accident that created it. Chemicals to the face =/= hyper jumping powers.

There is always going to be someone who doesn't like what you do.

That should not effect your own personal opinion though, you liked it, that's all that counts. I think people forget this, which is what annoys me sometimes when people are actually wasting their breath trying to explain to you what was 'bad' about a particular movie/game/book/song that you liked. I had this problem with Mass Effect 3 when it came out and that whole mess went down, as someone who loved it you were constantly getting bombarded by people essentially writing you essays on why it 'sucked'.

But yea, people do still enjoy movies, it's just the people who hate them seem to be the annoyingly vocal majority.

In part it's a reaction to the rabid Nolan fanboys who constantly beat the drum of realism and how the Nolanverse is so 'realistic', and Nolan is the greatest director of all time, and TDK is so deep and meaningful and life changing.

None of which is true. The Nolanverse can't be realistic because the core premise of any Batman movie is absurd - as you yourself say, "man dresses up as a bat and fights crime." Nolan is a competent director with some glaring flaws - like his inability to direct fight scenes. TDK was an okay action movie raised up by one genuinely great performance.

It's exactly the same reason SWTOR gets such a critical kicking from many people - if you claim something is ground breaking, revolutionary and/or perfect then it damn well better be those things, or people are going to call you out on it.
