I blame religion for the world's impending downfall. On a political, economic and globally fuck-up-people scale.

I'm probably more scared of Christianity these days than Islam...although to be honest they all seem to be as bad as each other.

Charity and equal rights. Think about it. Survival of the fittest means evolution. By allowing people who are not "the fittest" (i.e. the thick twats) to reproduce, we have cut the evolutional chain, meaning we can go no further until it is re-linked.

Religion, I frankly blame that for the worlds downfall. Religion on a political, economical and 'insane people' level.

Religion is dangerous not only through the way it clouds the mind with faith, but also through the way it is used as a method social control. That's always been the purpose of religion.

Consumerism. Going out of your way to get things because you have to have them.
Not only that, but also paying money for goods and services that one could obtain themselves through a little effort. Most people, when they need something, will just go out right away and pay money for it.

I do it myself whenever I possibly can, not only to save money, but to exercise my mental and physical ability to be self-sustaining as a person. If society were to collapse right now, most people would be fucked simply because they wouldn't have a Kwik-E-Mart or grocery store to make an errand run to.

I still say religion. The reasons why I blame organised religion are far too great in number to explain. But seeing it first hand through my family, friends and work has made me feel this way. I'm watching evangelical Christian headcases prophesise and encourage working towards doomsday as well as stamping out others who do not accept their views, Islamic fundamentalists who cut off the hands of children and bully their women into utter oppression, Hindu's who can't settle on their land rights and Jews who cannot tolerate a Muslim presence.

It's frightening stuff, it really really is. In this modern day and age it's still incredibly terrifying to see how it continues to function. Some of the people that believe in this bullshit are world leaders, important political figures and celebrities! That counts for all religions too.

I can see the world being torn apart within the next twenty or thirty years.

the complete lack of propper disipline for youngsters. i'm 19, and i look at some of my peers and think "you weren't hit enough when you were younger. you have no respect, and no concept of disipline. you're nothing more than a thug"

i look at the current kids (all round 9-12) and their behaviour, and think they need a good smacking to drill something into their ignorant thick skulls

Ego. The whole world says their the best, when most are equal in more ways than they realize. So I believe the biggest problem is the rulers of each country have egos that are way out of control. (or the worlds dependence on fossil fuels.)

Is it a modern day Roman Empire? I'd disagree with that.
As would I.
I also agree, at least the roman empire were competent.
yeah, the romans did some good aswell.
Just in the influence that we have and the fact that it's so widespread. The Roman Empire was much more competent, I'd agree with that statement. And I view it as a slowly dying empire is all...

You know those idiots who talk in the news about all the crime the GTA games cause? About all the school shootings being the responsibility of Maralyn Manson? You are doing the exact same thing when you blame religion for the terrible things that people do. Worse, you completely overlook the fact that even without religion people do terrible things. Some of the people who don't believe in "this bullshit" have committed some of the worst attrocities imaginable in the name of "cleaning it up". Do I hold atheism responsible for that? Of course not. That would be ridiculous for the simple reason there are over a billion atheists in the world and for the most part they are not trying to wipe out other creeds and cultures, but are happy to lead their lives with their own beliefs. By the exact same token, how can religion really be responsible for so much shit in the world when there are at least 4 billion theists in the world who all just live their lives and don't try to cause any trouble?

Some people are just bad. If they are atheist, religious, or simply Charles "Batshit" Manson crazy then they need to be judged on their own merits for what they do. In each case the the person responsible is just that, the person responsible. Not what they believe, not what they have been taught, but the person themselves.

but which nation shouts the loudest?

please forgive me for the ignorant hate-crime the rest of this post is about to become

most of europe looks at america and your rabid patriotism and sighs deeply.
the only reason your the 'greatest nation on earth' is because you declared yourself so, and just happen to be the biggest MEDC going at the moment.
we look at you and see an excited and spoiled child (in terms of history) who's just learned that he get what he wants by screaming at his parents (that would be us, over here in europe with a history longer than 200 years)

eventaully china will take over, and they WILL be better than yo, but you won't be able to handle not being the kid with the biggest collection of toys.

The biggest problem (that we're building towards at least) is the massive dependance on fossil fuels to maintain our standard of living, which are being used up at a huge rate, and for which we have no viable replacment to currently in place or indeed anywhere close to being in place.

The time will come when the only fossil fuels left will be those which are prohibitively expensive/difficult to obtain and with so little power being provided by alternative sources, most of our first world civilisation will be plunged straight back into the middle ages.

Maybe that's overly appocalyptic but the human race has a history of not preventing problems that can be seen up and coming and I just think that will repeat its-self with this situation.

You're pretty much completely right. And I say that as someone who has spent the majority of his life in America.

It's like Lewis Black put it; imagine if you worked at an office. Every day, one of your coworkers loudly and egotistically proclaims that he's the best worker there and the rest of you would be hopeless without him.

What would everyone's impression of that coworker be? Probably that he's a douchebag who hurts more than he helps.

That's because your ignorance is affirmed by the media dangling extremists in your face.

Hey, I got an idea! Let's take the violent and loud minority of a religious group and assume that everyone who has a faith affiliated with that general religion is EXACTLY the same! That makes sense, right? Let's also assume that anyone who DOES believe is automatically an uneducated moron who isn't fit for any sort of leadership, political career, or celebrity status (For some reason).

I can't decide what bugs me more: Elitist anti-theists who can't simply let people believe what they want even if they disagree (And yeah, you can disagree without being a jerk-off), or elitist anti-theists who obviously know very little any faith, but just assume they do because they watched some interview on Youtube with Dawkins who is under this hilarious delusion that if religion suddenly ceased to exist, that all the world's problems would be solved.

Yeah, hate-speech is a great way to show how bad religion is. Way to take the high-road.

And pardon me if I am coming off a bit harsh, but I've seen too much if this crap lately. People have a right to believe what they want. And please, I know that there are people who shove religion down the throats of others. I'm not saying they are right, but I AM saying that the right response isn't a hypocritical one.

I'm not going to respond to any quotes here, as I don't want to derail the thread any more. You want to talk more about it or whatever? PM me.

I would say pride is the world's biggest problem. Because we think we are better than others, we kill others for power and money. We destroy the environment cause we think we can own Mother Nature, and we spend too much cause we want more. I think Earth's biggest problem is just our hubris. We think we are superior to everything.

i like his analogy more. it's shorter, more succinct and gets the point across better.

Kudos good Sir!

No, they won't, I don't see China lasting for more than 10-20 years before the population finally get sick of their leaders and the bloodbath that follows that will set China back even further than they have become.

I don't really see one big problem with the world today, instead I see many problems, oil, fundamentalism and general fucktardery. Maybe this insistance on renewable energy (wind, hydro, solar, etc) to REDUCE our carbon output instead of investing all that cash into a technology that could actively reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. But that's another issue.
