While we're at it, can we bring back the search bar. I don't know where it might have gone off to, but apparently it's inaccessible. Escapist staff, could you please try to locate the errant search bar, so people can try to find other threads which talk about how terrible vampire mythos has become in light of Twilight.

OT:

Dude, shut up. There's no consistency in vampire lore to begin with, so it's all about picking a series you like a reading it. If you don't like Twilight vampires, do what I did: ignore them. Go read the Dresden Files, go read I am Legend, go read anything else you like. I didn't like Twilight, I never read them, and the concept sounded a bit soap-opera-ish, but we all sound like jackasses when the best we can come up with by way of criticism is:

"Nurr, I don't like your vampires. You changed it, now they suck"

Criticize the writing, the characters, whatever you like, but until you can find me actual evidence for what a "real" vampire would be like, stop being a pretentious idiot. Jim Butcher writes different vampires from Anne Rice, from Laurel K. Hamilton, from Bram Stoker, from Richard Matheson, from Stephanie Meyers, and from White Wolf Publishing. There's no consistency, and hence no "good" or "bad" only different interpretations of what a vampire "would" be like.

Stop the presses, one writer has a different concept of mythology from another. I'm shocked, shocked I say, to find that there isn't one universal way to think of vampires.
There seem to be some shared traits, though.

You have no clue how happy you made me with that reply. I don't particularly love Twilight but the mindless haters are really starting to get annoying. How many more "OMG TWILIGHT HAS SPARKLY VAMPIRES! VAMPIRES R ONLY COOL IF THEY SUCK BLOOD CUZ IM A MANLY ELITIST" threads do we need to get before people will shut up about it already.

I'm sorry, can you find me a non-emo, non-sadistic-bastard-vampire? If what you're saying is the only "real" vampire is the gorn-filled Hellsing stuff, I'm going to ask you to return your "literate person" license. Go read the original Dracula, it's all about Dracula being a bit emo. Go read any of Anne Rice. Hell, go watch Blade.

Just because a guy is ripped like Jesus doesn't mean he can't be emo. If your complaint is bishonen characters, I agree, but if your complaint is just the whiny nature of them, you apparently missed half of all of the vampires ever written or put on screen.

I didn't like Twilight, but dear lord, we can do better than this kind of complaint

Dracula has nothing to do with emotions, "real" vampires are blood thirsty dead people who's only interest is killing people and drinking their blood, not some 17 year old who wants love and cryes. Also why have vampires went from Nosferatu and Vampire the Masquerade to a corny teen love drama?! If you think the original Bam Stokers Dracula is the "real deal" (which i have read and saw the movie) you are wrong, cause the "original" vampires are from medieval lore and are about beast-men who eat people, which i should know since the word "vampire" comes from my language and is hunders of years old. So if you think the real vampires are the kind from Twilight, than i please ask you to leave the internet.
Also who said anything about Van helsing, that has to do with vampires as much as i have to do with Mars.
Try thousands. Vampiric creatures have been around since before we switched to the AD calendar.

If you think there's such athing as a "real" vampire I'm going to ask you to bugger off. Because (and get this):

[HEADING=1]They don't exist.[/HEADING]

Thank heavens for White Wolf and their Vampire: The Masquerade and Trokia games for their VtMBL, that is some awesome vamps for ya.
Sadly, after what happened to Trokia, I doubt any developer will be willing to try another "Vampire: The ..." again.

Indeed! I missed it first time around, but a magazine article and steam having it in its library got me to buy it.

I'd recommend you try it again with the community patches. I did and very few bugs remain.

Anywho, I loved the Vampires in that series - formerly the top predators in the world, they where hunted down by the Inquistion and nearly destroyed outright; now they hide and try to avoid detection, as the humans are too strong to defeat now, and increasing use of cameras and so forth just meants Vampires are getting weaker and weaker. Also, the origin story of the vampires really interested me, which is odd as I don't usually take to biblical/religious stuff.

As for Twilight, I don't really care about the 'sparkling' bit and whatnot, its more that they've basically written a genre highschool 'romance' story, then super glued vampires on top of it to make it stand out more.

I am Legend, THE BOOK, will likely redeem your opinion of vampires.

I hate twilight, up until that came out I used to love vampires.
I'm so glad i'm not the only person who has read the book. well apart from my other 1\2 who i near enough forced to read :p

WE WANT HEAD RIPPING!!!!

oh and i think they should make a live action Hellsing movie. i want to see Alucard proving that vampires are still awesome.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LITERATURE YOU C*NT!
And FYI Vampyrism WAS a real thing back in the "good old day" as you could call them, due to porfyria (or however it's spelled) which was very common in Romania at the time since they didn't really care whoever they f*ucked and major part of the villages were inbred. Porfyria is vaer funny since it made you highly light sensitive (sores and other horrible stuff in direct sunlight), and you had to consume a lot of iron: I.e. blood. And you know what, you should be very happy there is no real vampires cuz then you probably would've been killed ages ago. Now go blaspheme in a completely different forum.

Oh fuck, just watch True Blood all ready. It is the best Vamp stuff being made period. Nest season is most likely going to introduce Werewolves too. This show kicks ass.

The book was really good actually, better than the movie for shure.

OT: Vampires are dead. Meyer killed them. But atleast we still have Werewolves.

Hmm... The only valid mythos about a creature or mythological figure is the one that exists in folklore? Wow, you'd better go talk to every writer who has ever written about mythology. Tolkien basically made half of his crap up, even though it came from Middle English folklore. Do you reject that a mythological idea can't evolve over time?

Oh, by the way, the concept of a vampire is thousands of years old, and the word for it didn't just spawn in one place. Many places (including but not limited to: Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Greece, and Russia) have myths and words for what we now call vampire. Which are you claiming as the "one true ring" here? 'Cause all of them have different vampire myths.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_folklore_by_region

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_vampire_traits

So. Give me which one is the actual "right" vampire myth, and I'll go tell every author who has ever written an (obviously incorrect) vampire story. Or, you can accept that every myth in existence has evolved over the years, and stop being a horse's ass about it.

My point, however, as it has ever been, is that there is no actual "real" vampire lore. You can choose whoever's conception of vampirism you enjoy, and just run with it. I like the Dresden Files version. Other people like Dracula, some like Nosferatu, others Anne Rice. If you don't like Twilight's vampires, that's fine. But to argue that they're "wrong" makes you look like a jackass.

Um... Except the whole "vampires = porphyria" thing is based on the premise that sunlight hurts those who have porphyria, and hurts vampires. Here's the thing, "sunlight hurts vampires" wasn't part of vampire lore until 1922, when people misinterpreted the original silent film Nosferatu. Vampirism (and I'll never understand the pretentious desire to throw "y"s in where "i"s belong) was a myth, in the same way any supernatural creature is. Thus the myth is mutable and malleable.

Also, if you honestly think that vampirism was simply an offshoot of misconceptions about porphyria, where does the rest of it come from? The whole "can't cross a threshold" or "stopped by running water" stuff?

Or, how about we accept that there's never been a consistent set of "rules" for vampires, and move on with our lives?

If you want old-fashion Stoker-esque vampires, I recommend you get writing and hope it takes off. Otherwise, you might as well deal with the Anne Rice evolution.

Everyone who watched Twilight should be forced to read or watch Hellsing. The exact opposite of Twilight. This will force them to realize that Vampires are bloodthirsty killing machines with no human feelings of love and compassion.
