Meh, what is the definitive vampire anyway? That's like asking for the definitive super hero or werewolf...
Dracula? Superman? I think you could call them definitive with ease, even if they aren't your preferred characters.
No, they were just the most popular incarnations, they weren't the first and they weren't the last. They sure as hell don't define the limits of what a vampire or superhero can or should be...

You can ask for better movies/books but you can't ask for a 'better' vampire because they are simply all different. What makes them good is an entirely subjective opinion...

That said, if anyone can actually justify why being glittery is good, I'll eat my own face...

I think there's a difference to what is the "definitive" version of something and the "best". I agree completely that what is good is an entirely subjective opinion. What I mean by "definitive" could as well be called "quintessential".

It's not about who was first or last or "best". It's about what's the most iconic. Jaws is the definitive, quintessential, most iconic shark attack film, even if I think Shark Attack 3 is a lot more entertaining and thus better in my opinion.

God, i wish real, non-sucky vampires would come back. I actually miss the juvenile terror of having my body drained of essential fluids.... Now girls are draining their fluids over Edward Cullen. HE'S NOT REAL!

Sparklepires should not exist. They need to be destroyed.

I'm still trying to find a good vampire book dammit! Vampire Diaries is decent, but I despise the female main character. So far the best one I can find is Interview with a Vampire, and well, still not quite what I'm looking for. EXACTLY what I'm looking for in terms of vampire, but the book itself. Hmm, looking for something with a little more heart pounding action instead of just focusing on some colonial era vampire's moral struggles >_>

... Blade.
You think "old, good" vampires, and you think Blade.
Damn kids...

But yeah, I would love to see some more Dracula-type vampires.
I mean, I am completely uninterested in vampires, and even I can't deny the awesome of Dracula.

I'm not on the bandwagon, going on every twilight hate thread going "OH YEAH, F-TWILIGHT!!!"
But I've been alot less positive against vampires in general now.

And now with New Moon, warewolves are next. You could already see it on the WoW forums when Blizzard announced the Worgen race.

I can say this we as a society need to bring back the bloodsucking human-enslaving vampires we grew up on. Not this emotionally drained 'i hate who i am' type vampire.

If you're willing to read for your vampirey goodness, I recommend Charlie Huston's great series beginning with Already Dead. It's got all the violence and darkness you'd expect of a more traditional vampire story, plus the vamps definitely don't sparkle. The author's more of a mystery writer than a horror guy, so the plots generally center around a private eye style investigation (I know, another vampire PI...but this one actually works). The characters are fun and unique...and not averse to killing people. You know, vampires.

SO true. These Sparkle-Shiny-Cutmyselfatnight-Vampires are pathetic. The kind of movie we need is a movie where there's a really strong vampire and said vampire completely and totally fucks up a major city. Then gets staked...somehow.

But, unfortunately, Twilight and it's spawn have permanently scarred the Vampire genre in general, and there will always be some kind of good mushy sparkly-shiny vampire book out.

The best vampire movie ever was "Bram Stokers, Dracula". Luckily for me I have it floating around here somewhere to keep me happy until this ridiculous trend is over.

I can't stand Twilight. I work in a bookstore and I'm sick of people asking for it all the time.

I have to say in defence of Buffy, at least it was funny and had well written characters.

I also recommend checking out the following:

Vampire Hunter D (Manga and both movies)
Dracula (Original book)
Buffy (At least series 1-4 and maybe 5-7 depending on how interest you still are after series 4)
Angel (Just Series 1)
Hellsing (Manga and tv series, haven't seen unlimited yet)

Look up Dracula's powers.

When was the last time you say a vampire turn into a Wolf, Fog or a rat? When was the last time you saw a vampire have his powers reduced during the daytime but still be able to use them at Dusk, Dawn and (most importantly) noon? Or when they used sacramental bread as a weapon against him?

Definitive? Only to people who haven't looked him up.
