Cars 2 could be Pixar's first flop.

Cars was good, it was probably Pixar's worst movie; but the worst Pixar movie is still a pretty good movie.
I expect the sequel to be about on the same level.

At least it'll still be infinitely better than Shrek 5 or whatever it's called. =D

But Kung Fu Panda 2 still looks cool.
Agreed, there have been four good Pixar-esque 3D animation Dreamworks flicks and those are Shrek (1), Kung Fu Panda, Ice Age (1) and Ants. I do hope they don't kill the Kung Fu Panda franchise like they did Shrek and Ice Age...It could happen, but I'm an optimist.
Actually, Ice Age was done by Blue Sky Studios for 20th Century Fox.
Good call, learn something new every day =D
I mostly agree with you guys. I thought Ice Age 3 still had its charm but on the whole it was run through the ringer, as for Shrek, I prefered the second over the first, Puss was amazing.

Kung Fu Panda however was AWESOME! The style was soooooooooo detailed, from the body structure of the animals to the fight choreography. The Tai Lung escape sequence, in fact the character as a whole, was so bad arse it gave me goose bumps. If I had to complain about it, id say the fact that Jackie Chan, the ACTUAL Martial artist, only got around 5 lines of dialogue is a bloody insult. I pray to the ancesters of Kung Fu that the second one doesnt suck.

My God I love Animation.

So much potential, way too much Larry the Cable Guy. Anything with that stupid redneck automatically decreases in appreciation value by a factor of at least one million.

He makes me angry...

Cars was not their best. Which still doesn't mean it's bad.

I don't really have any desire to see it's sequel.

I thought Cars was a good movie, and I'm not even into automobiles. It's certainly not Pixar's best, but I thought it was better than some of their films, like Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo.

*dodges tomatoes*

Wait, I thought those were good films too! I just felt Cars was better, that's all.

This. Cars was hardly fantastic - I liked it better when it was called Doc Hollywood - but when the worst movie a studio has made is still decent, that's a hell of a track record.
Now that you mention it, Doc Hollywood is an awesome comparison!

I heard about this...basically Michael Eisner was the bane of Pixar's life and they were heavily against them. When he left the new guy (I forget the name) offered John Lasseter (deemed the head of Pixar) a major seat at Disney. This meant he got to make decisions about what Disney did as a company. However to do this, the rest of the board wanted to make some money out of Pixar, since they held quite a few shares in the company. As such, Disney requested Pixar to make 3 sequels, Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Monsters Inc 2. If they refused, John Lasseter wouldn't get his seat (this was also his major dream, to become head of Disney). The reasons for those 3 films was that the merchandise had the most profits, and in todays market the merchandise often makes more money then the films (I think...don't hold me to that...)

Anyway, this is also a reason why Disney's films are getting slightly better. Tangled was a group project led partially by John Lasseter, however it was a Disney project. Disney wanted to get back to making regular cartoons and trying to "capture the magic they once lost". Two projects I knew they were doing was "The Princess and the Frog" and "Rapunzel" which became "Tangled". However Pixar are still doing original projects. Their next big ones are "The Bow and the Bear" followed by "Newt" (look them up, I think the plots have been summarised). So if you see a Pixar sequel, blame the Disney board and don't expect much love from it (bar Toy Story 3 but Pixar wanted to make that mean something).

Personally the way I'm looking at it is that while Pixar may get slightly worse, Disney will be getting so much better. I'm quite happy for that compromise, I mean it could be worse...a WHOLE lot worse...

So long as they don't make a sequel to Up, I have no problem with what they make.

I didn't see Cars initially. Like others, the trailer didn't really do it for me, and I thought it looked a bit silly. I ended up buying it for my 3 year old son, and it became one of his favourites. I really like the movie. It's definitely worth watching.

I have to admit, I'm cautious about how good the second one will be. The trailers make it look rather silly, compared to the more serious themes of the first one. I'll still take my son to go see it though.

I wish I could say that I was clever enough to come up with that comparison, but no. Basically every movie critic has pointed out the resemblance before me.

It's still true, though. Even if you don't know Doc Hollywood, the plot is such a cliche. Wow, the guy with a big ego and a single-minded focus on winning realizes it's better to take things less seriously and care about others? Color me fucking surprised!

It does look bad, and I really disliked Cars (along with any movie that uses sports or races as a main plot device). Main reason they're doing it was how much of a commercial success the first Cars was. I mean look, there's all that merchandise still being sold on it...

My reaction: "WHAT?! NO INCREDIBLES 2?! WHY?! WHY, PIXAR?!"

I'll still go see it.
Ah, fuck, I loved The Incredibles! And they made the widest opening for a sequel in any of Pixars movies!

Yeah, fuck Cars, move onto The Incredibles!

I thought Cars 1 was their first flop. I'm just waiting for Monsters Inc 2. That will be awesome.

Cars indeed was Pixar's worst critically acclaimed film (86% on Rotten Tomatoes), but by an exceedingly large margin it has made them the most money.

Conversely, Up has been regarded alongside Toy Story and Finding Nemo as their best, but because of how little associated merchandise the released alongside it, their stock price fell when the movie came out.
An alarming trend, but not an entirely unexpected one.
Business and Creativity have an initial common ground, and something to offer each other, but expectations seem to drive them apart as time goes on.

They did it for the merchandise sales. Honest, you can't make much bank on Up, there's only Russell, the Old Guy, that Bird, and the Dog; very few characters to sell.
Toy Story 3 offers all of those toys to be sold, and Cars 2 will have a crapload of cars that they can cash in on in toy sales. Pixar is kinda becoming a sell-out, though I blame Disney
Becoming a sell-out based on one yet-to-be-seen film?

OT: I didn't even know its been announced. I still don't get why they haven't done The Incredibles 2 either.

Their worst (I've only seen bits of Cars, so I may change my mind if I ever see it) is Finding Nemo though.
