I never understood this either. Cat ears on people are not cute, they're weird. They don't look good, and I've never met a mentally stable person wearing cat ears.

Twisted, macabre humour aside. I'll wear them if only part of the scene. No different really from any other type of non-protective headdress.

Some people think that cat ears are "cute" and so they put them on "cute" anime chicks (who are always young) to increase the "cute"ness levels.

I'll admit cat ears can have an appeal to me, but sometimes the "cute"ness levels reach Taste Like Diabetes [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TastesLikeDiabetes] levels. I remember one time there was a thread on who had the "cute"st avatar. Ugh, the "cute"ness was too much for me.

Hardly and Otaku only thing, like most people have been saying, cat ears are cute. Or sexy depending on the personality of the character and the way they are drawn. Often times a character with cat ears will have a personality to match, whether that's the playful cheerful kitten kind or the relaxed lounging imperious kind again depends. Kind of like the tank is a huge strong looking guy, or the fragile speedster is short. It's as much of an easy way to identify a characters personality as it is a stylistic choice.

Actual people wearing cat ears, you've got to be something special to pull it off without looking ridiculous.

Why they exist in the first place is kind of a mystery, though.

I myself have never understood the trend in Japanimation of putting cat ears on everyone and everything, I find it unexplainable as Japan is a nation with cultural tropes very normal and completely relatable-

...In all seriousness maybe it's some kind of sign of innocence, are people in anime with cat ears ever 18+ males that could actually pass as male? Then again maybe it was that for a while, then after all the kids started running around with cat ears screaming "KAWAII" (is it just me or should Hawaii be paying Japan half of it's travel revenue at this point...I mean considering the average IQ of people in the west who use that word in their day-to-day lives simply hearing Kauai being pronounced would warrant an instant plane ticket purchase) it was something to do for your anime to get instant praise from some lonely teen forum-goer who thinks they're the cutest thing on earth (I go to a school where I'm surrounded by girls of this mindset...*seethes with rage*).

Edit: As for the status of cats in general, I've never seen why people think they're so cute...dogs on the other hand...
