Wow I think I need to get some sleep, this thread title looked like it was making a lot of sense as I was sitting here nursing my cat looking at its ears. Kinda made me wonder what the deal was with them, and then I was thinking oh wow some one else is wondering what the deal is with them. I mean as them been a pretty good yard stick for what mood your cat is in. Yeah need sleep.

I fail to see any appeal to that, I'd be freaked out and wonder what kind of unholy union such a creature was spawned from

Cats have very good hearing. So people in Anime surgically implant cat ears onto their heads. It is a brutal trade as Many cats are killed to harvest their ears.

It's a fetish thing. As for fetishes, well Freud hypothisized that a fetish was made when a boy would see his mother naked and notice that she didn't have a penis, and that a fetish would be something he would fantasize as a replacement for his mothers penis.
...yeah... Freud may have been an early genius in the field of psychology was still a fucking joke back then. I can't adequately explain why cat ears are used or why i myself actually find it attractive, you're better off not worrying about it. It's not like the cat ears are used as a mind controlling device and as we speak an army of cat-eared women are on their way to your hometown to murder your entire family.

That's like asking why playboys wear bunny outfits: you COULD ask, but why would you question it?

Because some people get turned on when females have animal parts, which I find rather disturbing.

It's seen as cute and it's an easy form of cosplay. You just put on a pair of ears and you ready to go.

I might be wrong, but I think it also has something to do with Shinto mythology. You'd have animal spirits shapeshift into human form, but they'd still have their animal ears (cat, fox etc).

They should be so lucky. Fun little fact: every anime character not wearing cat ears is wearing duck ears. Look it up.

Holy crap, I always thought that picture was fan art, given Horo's lack of visible pants. I guess Manga gets away with more (or at least tries to... maybe wants to?).
huh? o_O It's not that explicit <.< She appears nude in a couple of scenes but it's tasteful rather than nude for the sake of nude.

Ookami to koushinryo (Wolf & Spice) is a brilliant manga and anime. Has real depth and complicated drama, it's not about action or archetypal characters like 90% of the stuff out there.

Holo is my absolute favourite manga character, and after watching the S1 & parts of S2 of the anime, she's easily one of the best characters there are.

Well the story and plot are a bit dry, the ambiance, drama, romance, and grasp of the subject material (16th century barter-credit trading) gives the show a strong polish and creates truly unique down-to-earth conundrums that aren't simply hero 'x' beating villain 'y'.

I recommend it manga newbies and veterans alike. The artwork is fantastic (barring some scenes, especially in the few moments there is action) ... but landscapes and so forth are beautifully drawn.

I feel like there's a bit of a divide going on between the "Well I've really never understood it" and the "BECUZ TEHRE KYOOT" crowd. If I may interject, it is worth noticing that people, well a significant portion of our countrymen if Youtube is to be believed, cats are cute, fun to pet, and by extension, it can be implemented as cat ears and tail.

it's culture oriented, it's a way of expresion/portrayal of emotion/behaivour/mentality. it has nothing to do w/ "being cute" (unless that is the portayal, and how they did it.) if you want a comparison, it's like the steryo type of americans being dumb fat rednecks, or british bland old people w/ nothing but drunks and asexuality, or us canadians living in our iglues w/ the polar bears, watching hockey and drinking beer wearing our Toques. thats right, T-O-Q-U-E, not "knitted hat" it has a name eh!? :p or austrailians all being crocodile dundee and steve eerwin (i think i have the last name right, didn't look it up.) it's just a steryo type, portrayed both in the culutre by the people of the culture, and then scewed into some steryo type it's not, by people not in the culture :p just like other ones around the world /me looks out side at my rain, goddamnit...eh.

Cat ears are awesome and uber-cute. You don't question this. I'm sorry, but you just don't.

Fuck cats, evil demon spawned monsters that they are. Therefore, Cat ears can go to hell.

Go Dogs!

OT: Dunno, The Japs have been putting wierd shit in their cartoons for a while. Course, so have we, I seem to recall quite a few animal ladies with big ol hooters in some of the older cartoons.

Make of this what you will.

I don't see any attraction to that. Why the hell would the girl be acting as a cat? That's not sexy or attractive or cute.

It's just another generic staple in anime it would seem. And by the looks of it one that works very well.

Yes a cosplay of Spice and Wolf would be wicked, mainly because to do it properly you have to be drunk. ;)
Well of course :D ... Maybe next year I might make a Holo cosplay from the second episode when she is wearing Lawrence's merchant outfit.

Does it still need to be spelled out?

*AHEM*
BECAUSE IT FULFILLS A SEXUAL FETISH FOR LOTS AND LOTS OF STRANGE PEOPLE.

And to those who think cat ears are "teh kyootest tinhgs evar!", apparently you've never met my dogs. Corgi ears win out over cat ears ANY DAY.
