I was gonna say "WTF Japan" because I thought they meant women's underwear, which would be very creepy. But then I found out it was men's, so I'm like "OK, whatev's". But now I'm all like "Wait, it's cool for it to be men's underwear, but not women's? Is that sexist? What is wrong with me?"

So in short I'm confused as hell right now.
The Japanese limited edition was actually less weird, as it didn't contain any underwear or pizza boxes. Atlus USA made it weirder for American audiences. TRULY THIS IS THE FUTURE.

Did that help or did it make things worse?
That probably says something about cultural perceptions.

i don't get those special editions for brand new IPs
special editions ought to be meant for fans but with brand new IPs there are none (of the game anyway)

I know as soon as some people hear the word Catherine and underwear, they are gonna pre-order immediately without even checking the contents of the Special Edition.
I already have the art book and soundtrack - from the Japanese version. ^.^
You haven't lived till you've had to outrun a monstrous baby while solving a block puzzle.

No boxers or pillowcases though.
Wait so you've actually played it? So can you tell me more about the gameplay than the site does because seriously, that thing is like a salt lick for pre-pubescent teens. It says nothing about the gameplay other than "block puzzle combat" and I'm not even sure what the heck that is?? So to me so far it's like a version of Steal Princess with the oversexualization ramped up to 14....

An' for the love of Nike would people PLEASE stop saying they're buying this to "support ATLUS" No. Sorry. Don't buy it. You want to buy a litesofthentai game your biz, but if what you say is true then where the hell were you when they released equally daring (but not sexual) games like, well MOST of what ATLUS has done but that I never see on threads here. Get serious, the only reason Catherine is getting this attention is the over sexualization. So most of you can knock off the "Supportive Faithful" crap. (Unless you actually own Dark Tower. In which case, you're a better man than I Gunga Din.) The over objectification is probably why I'll have to give this one a miss, I mean your date's gonna' see that pillow/art book at some point and yeah - have fun explaining how you're just supporting poor little ATLUS! *facepalm*

Oh and by the way ATLUS, yeah I love you but seriously, don't try to compete with GL, My support does have it's limits (Dark Tower)....

When I saw the headline about a special edition I was kinda sad since I had already preordered the regular edition through gamespot, but once I saw the SE's contents I was like meh, but now I get an art book and soundtrack regardless so Im happy!!!

Ehh...$20 extra?

I'll spring for it, I suppose

Just to support Atlus more. And the pizza box will make AWESOME storage, I suppose.

Sadly, the clothes won't fit me. >_>
Well, if I do decide to get it, I'm probably going to have to get it from GameStop.

The majority of the pre-orders I make are from Amazon, and it looks like Amazon is just offering the Art-book and CD, I guess they don't want to ship the rest of the stuff, or they think the rest of the stuff is just too weird.

Though it might turn out to be one of those things where different retailers get different pre-order packages, some get the shirt, some will get the pizza box and underwear, and others will get the pillowcase.

I hate it when companies do that. I didn't get that cool Castlevania t-shirt, because I pre-ordered my special edition copy of Lords of Shadow from Amazon instead of Best Buy.

This is frustrating me now. WHAT THE FUCK EVEN IS IT? I don't even know the genre. All I've seen are pictures of those two girls and Shaggy from Scooby Doo, I haven't seen even a single hint to it actually being a game other than that it's on the Escapist, but people are shitting their pants over it.
WHY?
There is a thing called Google, many people use it if they want to know something, just search for videos about the game. There are already videos of gameplay from the Japanese version on youtube.

It is a anime art style platformer with anime cut-scenes.

All I can add is, that it is one of those situations where people that love a certain game company in this case Atlus, find out about a game they are creating and find it interesting and want to play it, but then found out that Atlus wasn't going to make a release for outside Japan.

This got Atlus fans in an uproar and so Atlus, seeing they had made a big mistake, started development of copies for worldwide release.

Other than that, from what I have seen of it, it is psychological horror puzzle platformer. There is always a giant market for psychological horror stuff.

Ya I'm gonna ignore this game, just like every Japanese game that pushes the boundary between perv and stalker. So pretty much all of them...

right is it not the point of special editions to get you to spend more money on a game

are we gamers really lacking for underwear and empty pizza boxes that these are considered extras

maybe the games industry should look at the optional extras carmakers give you for some hints.

You know what? I cannot shake off a feeling that people from Atlus went with a following line of thought: "You know what? Since people are convinced we'll always do a properly mature tackle at controversial topics, let's make the most obnoxious game of ALL TIME. It'll be all about sex. Don't think about anything else, just sex, and maybe betrayal. And let's put some sheep into it, to make it more weird. And let the main character... Climb up the box tower just for the heck of it. And then let's throw a bunch of awkward collector items. Man, people are going to get pissed, when they'll find out it's not really that mature game, but it will be SO worth it".

Seriously. The more I see about it, the more I think they dropped the Persona style plot, and put their trollface masks. I dunno why, but I expect a letdown at this point.

Of course, the thing that makes most sense of all is the fucking pillow case. I know otakus are a crazy bunch (I happen to know cos I kind of am one), but Christ. A pizza box? Soundtrack? Boxers? ...oh, Japanese love pillow! Well now it's less weird!

I'm preordering this because I love "True" special editions. Today, the standard "Pay $20 USD more for an artbook and because its the only way to get the in-game widget" CE is what we normally get. I have a mint copy of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, complete with gold-plated medallion. I have Metal Gear Solid 1-3 Japanese Special Editions. Hell, I even have a Cho Aniki box that I picked up from the crazy Chinese guy near them movie theater who sold import SNES and eventually PSX games and modded systems.

Atlus does some really enjoyable stuff in the medium and they're willing to break ground in ways that isn't typical. Catherine is reported to be a psychological horror investigation into a very VERY unusual protagonist. In Japan, they're called "Sheep Boys" - which are basically guys who have difficulty processing what to do about women/finding a mate and as such "shut down" or have a break down that comes out in other ways. Maybe they appear to not have any interest in "traditional" Japanese male values, especially finding a woman. Notice this is a totally different and newer thing than say, "hikkikomori". From the gameplay videos I've seen and the cutscenes, this delves into the emotional experience of this rather unlikely hero. Catherine's sexuality is not portrayed as alluring but rather scary, and I'm interested to see where this is going: Will it be the tale of a man who has misconceptions about women/other people and learns to see past them as he grows up and attempts to have a mature relationship - maybe Catherine and his nightmare world isn't so scary after all? Or is she really malicious with her amorous intent and takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting "sheep boys", because she was tormented? Something else entirely?

and free boxers and t-shirt. Can't complain.
