Casual Games are the Romcoms and Horror films of the video game industry. Fine for passing a bit of time but not the classics that stay in your memory. There's a place for both in the world as far as I'm concerned.

The only people that annoy me in gamestores are those that waste the employees and other customers time, normally it's 12 year olds trying to buy GTA or trading in a bunch of crappy PS2 games then deciding it's not worth the £8 they get offered.

so i read all the replies and well...

Seeing casual gamers in game stores, makes me feel like a god in a geek/snob kind of way.

I dont trust employees, i've met 2 employees in my 11 year old (and counting) gaming life who actually knew what they were talking about.

Other than that i was trial and error.

I dont want to punch them in the face, i just want them to stick to walmarts and stuff...leave game stores for gamers.

Yeah, since the majority of my friends are just like that. But I found that they're really like that because they don't have the ability to think. If they play a challenging game, (I won't give an example because some retard'll be like "That's not a really challenging game! My 10 year old niece can play it!" Shutup nerds)they'll find that they suck at it, and instead of trying again to improve like a sensible gamer would, they yell "This game's retarded!" chew on the controller, and then go back to playing Halo. Oops! I totally let that one slip...

I don't have anything against newcomers to gaming (as mentioned earlier, we all had to start somewhere), but surely if you are going to work at a gaming shop, a prerequisite is knowledge of the industry, isn't it? I was in EB about a year ago, and an employee was showing some guys around the PS3 area. They say they want something with good co-op (they already had Rainbow Six: Vegas, so the options were already limited), then she points out Heavenly Sword, claiming "you could take turns at it". No joke at all. Gobsmacked doesn't do my reaction credit.
it's the PS3.

it's not like there are any good options.

*puts on rain coat*
True, but she could at least have tried to find something, instead of pointing out random games.

Usually it doesn't bother me when young/casual gamers are buying games - the vast majority of gamers aren't hardcore, so it's pretty commonplace to see one or two casual gamers in game stores. It's the casual gamers that think they know what they are talking about that bug me.

The one incident where I was on the verge of calling a "casual" out: As I was waiting in line at my local GameStop, the person ahead of me asked an employee about Too Human (it's release date, if it's good or not, etc), but before the employee has a chance to answer the person behind me blurts out that it's an FTS. Right. I couldn't help but chuckle a good bit and point out that Too Human is not an FTS. Looking rather flustered, the employee politely told the man in front of me what it was - totally ignoring the casual. The casual gamer stepped out of line and pretended to browse older games until I left the store.

My brother is 12 years old, and could kick many peoples asses at Call of Duty, but when he walks into a game store, everyone treats him like some whiny kid walking in with his mom and begging for the latest piece of low-budget Wii crap. It's not his fault that he has to walk in with his mom, he can't exactly drive. My point is that people need to stop assuming that just because someone isn't over the age of 16 that they are automatically a casual.

Just a question...why does anyone care what games other people go out and buy? Its not like they're going to abduct you and force you to sit there and watch them play it, you get what you want (and enjoy it for the greatness you believe it is) and they get what they want (and get to enjoy it without being hassled by everyone else for being 'casual gamers').

If someone is being an outright idiot (for example, standing at the front of the line in a shop and wasting time by asking the guy behind the desk for a full blown review of the game), then I can sympahise and might even join in with the degredation of the poor fool. Otherwise, some people just need to mind their own business and stop ripping into others for 'having no taste in games'.

Whenever I'm in a game store around the holidays, I always see people passing by me whom I just want to stop and say "Excuse me, but that game sucks." For example, last year, I was at the local GameStop, and I passed by this woman carrying a huge stack of like 10 craptacular games. I can understand purchasing Turok if you haven't read reviews, but how the hell does The Guy Game appeal to anyone? Also, at the bottom of the stack, I saw the cardnial sin. Barbie. Horse. Adventures. I so badly wanted to tell her that all those games suck and then point out good alternatives such as Rainbow Six Vegas instead of Turok, porn instead of The Guy Game, and anything at all instead of that...thing.
Same here, but I know that instead of taking my advice, whoever I was giving it to will probably throw a fit and give me shit for trying to help them out. I'd really love to steer people away from shit games and point them in the direction of better ones, but I doubt I can do that.

It's a real shame, I haveta say.

By the way, OP, you shouldn't get pissed off at the little kid. I'm sure you did the same (or something close enough) when you were his age. We all bought our share of shit games that, I know I did. I thought they were amazing cause to be honest, I was too young to know any better =/

Get a bit of perspective. You are not superior to what you scathingly refer to as "casual" gamers or soccer moms. At least they are having fun with the games, instead of being frustrated all the time just because their hobby has hit a bigger market.
I love how casual gamers have hijacked the concept of fun and changed it to mean anything that's devoid of depth and challenge.

The reason why some of us aren't thrilled about video gaming becoming such a big market is because it has dumbed down gaming and gaming culture.

Also, why do people keep insisting that the term "casual gamer" exists outside an EA board room meeting?
Because casual gamers constantly remind us of their existence.

These 'casual gamers' are normal people. You know, the people that get to have sex with women. Sometimes, these people like to buy video games because they want to turn their brains off and kill stuff for a while. Y'all can go back to jerking yourselves off to japanese cartoon porn and diligently reading your gamer magazines, I'm going to go get some head from my real life girlfriend.
I don't see anything wrong with Hentai...

Because it's the internet and everything's a fucking competition here. First price is dick-waving rights while runner-ups have to settle for dignity.

It's not that. It's that the man power that was being used to make the games I liked are now being used to produce games I don't like. They are also slowly making franchises that I actually enjoyed into more casual, and dumbed down versions of the games. This isn't always a bad thing, in the case of Civilization Revolutions, but in most cases, it's made me not want to buy games.

This also plays into the whole piracy discussion as well as the cost of games and how not every new release that comes in a box is worth $50.

But Shawn of the Dead was freaking awesome, and that was both of those!

There are a lot of things I want to say to someone picking up a crap game, but I don't because I respect other people's opinions (Unless they like My Chemical Romance or are a furry) and just shrug it off. True, it'd be nice to see someone pick up a decent game and at least consider buying it, but until everyone realises Halo 3 wasn't better than the second coming of Jesus Christ, that isn't going to happen.

Typical "hardcore" gamer: you have to find yourself superior in this light because chances are sex and a tan are two things that have escaped you for so long you have to compensate by being on top in something. Stereotypes are fun, aren't they?
This will probably end up sounding defensive, but fuck it, don't you fall under the "hardcore" crowd and not the "casual" crowd because you post on a video game message board? Not even one like gamespot where a "casual" gamer can find themselves when trying to get a recommendation on a game, but the Escapist. If you don't, then why not?

Since I get somewhat sick and tired of this petty arguing over games and the people who play them, I will yet again try to place the indifferent voice of reason in here and step up to defend the hapless lackies who are being belittled this time around.

I find it quite amusing how the first (and useually only) insult thrown at more...let's say 'devoted' gamers is that they are lifeless social pariahs. For example, I happen to be very pale, you have me there, but I am pale by choice (I think it looks better), not because I'm afraid I'll go up in flames in direct sunlight.

Sex is the other topic that anti-gamers will bring up as a way of degrading our hardcore comrades. Even though I personally hve never had it, I have it on good authority that sex is great, it feel good, looks good and could be seen as good exercise for some. However, it would be somewhat narrow minded to assume that because someone hasn't had intercourse that they are a worse person because of it.

What I've written here by no means that I (like some people on this forum) hold contempt for casual or hardcore gamers...I just want everyone to get along for once (it'll make you live longer).

I had to stand in line for much too long while some kid bought a game with small bills and change while his mom watched. Can't she buy the game and make him pay, like all sensible people? Of course he counted wrong, and had to count out more change.
I hate it when parents do this shit with their kids.

Hey Mabel, how about doing some practice runs with the kid at home so he doesn't count like a dislexic when he's in my line. And maybe you should explain the mind blowing concept of sales tax at home first so the little turd doesn't have a confused panic attack when the clerk drops the real price on him at the register and he doesn't have enough.
