Andrew Ryan. It's not his death, it's the terms on which he dies. "A man chooses, a slave obeys." I didn't even feel like a slave at that point, more like a tool.
Fundamentally, a slave is a tool.
I know, but a slave still has some freedom. He can choose to not obey, though that'll result in a beating.

Jack, or rather the player, on the other hand, has no choice. When someone says the magic words, he has no choice but to obey.

When Jack died on my first playthrough. It just came out of no-where and considering that I spent the entire game romancing her and I was happy with the softer side she started showing. Then *BBOOOOMM!!* dead.

As much as I enjoyed the game on its own merits, I blitzed through Killzone mainly because of my fierce hatred of General Adams. I felt overjoyed when I shot his cowering, pathetic carcass.

Simillarly, I was quite disapointed by Visari's death in the sequel. Man, I truly hate that Rico prick.

I never could bring myself to exterminate the rachni in Mass Effect. It reminded me too much of Ender's Game.
Exactly my reasoning. That book and Speaker for the Dead changed my perception about communication and compassion.

I felt legitimately sad when
Bolvar Fordragon 'died' at Wrathgate. He was such an epic hero, and since I played Alliance for a couple of years in the early days, I still remember him pulling a badass and fighting off Onyxia and her dragon friends. Seeing that as a low level character was mindblowing. You find out the advisor's a dragon, then she summons all her minions and he's like "Bring it the fuck on, all of you." And he wins. I was horrified to see him 'die' in such an undignified manner (poison gas + dragon fire). Then you see the abomination he'd become at the very end before he is made into the Lich King. It saddened me to see such a tangibly great hero of the Alliance to perish and be forgotten in such an ignoble manner.

Wow...thinking of the deaths in video games that I remember...it's really making me sad...and this is why I like video games. Because you get so attached to characters that losing them makes you feel like you've lost a bit of yourself. You control them, you're helping them, you are them, and when they die...it's just...just so sad...
Well said my friend. I can't count the times I've been saddened over the death of a favorite character and the fact that I know it was ME interacting with them makes the tragedy all the stronger. It's one of the ways in which I feel videogames surpass film on an emotional level. (See: Mass Effect)

I really hate how any characters who die in Mass Effect 2 don't even get a funeral or anything. It's like no one cares about their death.

When Thane died, it was okay. I thought he was an awesome character, but I didn't like him that much. But when Garrus died, I nearly ripped my hair out. Sure, his personality in the second game was kinda like cardboard, but he was still the best character in the game, other than Shepard. I'm actually going to replay the suicide mission, and I'm making sure he doesn't die. I'm not playing Mass Effect 3 without Garrus, dammit.

I was so upset when Mae Hughes died in fullmetal alchemist. It was really sad, especially when Elysia, his daughter, started asking questions at the funeral.

KOTOR spoilers:

Forcing Zaalbar to kill Mission has never given me a more evil feeling. I swear, some of the stuff you do in that game... it was actually very appropriate too, for a dark side user. Test your companion's loyalty by severing them from what they love, and forcing them to do the cutting.

Killing both Yuthura Ban and the Sith Master on Korriban. Same exact reason, it actually felt quite appropriate within the game's context, and was the most Sith-like decision you could make. A lot of the deaths in that game were really deep.

Jade Empire:

Sagacious Zu's death. When I finally got the last piece of the amulet, it was like a huge gold find. Then the next cutscene shows Death's Hand in the same room. I was like, "Oh no, you fuckwit. You're not doing anything to me OR my friends" shortly before he did do something to my friend. Made me feel bad that my friend and spy was killed off.

Master Li. That was so satisfying, after all that he put me through, finding him and after finding him. I came back from the dead to kill the prick and it was worth every single second.

Well, Terranigma managed to pull off a really touching ending considering how lightly it was written (not to mention translated). It's a SNES game and hardly ahead of it's time in that aspect, but
it's just really tragic to see Ark leave home (which is in a sort of an underworld) to not just save the world like a normal RPG hero, but actually restore it piece by piece after the destruction has already happened, when his only rewarded is finally returning to his home village and friends... And only have one day to live there. Same goes for everyone else in the village, although they don't know it.

And you have to end the game by going to sleep yourself at the end of the day (i.e. when you have you feel like you've explored the village enough and talked to everyone you want).

No one ever knows what he did, even though your exposition fairy does tell him as a goodbye that what he did pretty much makes him worthy of being called "God".

It was just so painfully obvious that the only reason to kill her off randomly was to have an excuse for excessive amounts of melodrama. It really just annoyed me, but so did every other scene where the game tried to be deeply dramatic.

The Boss at the end of MGS 3. Making the player pull the trigger was just cruel. Especially when you're told at the end she wasn't really a traitor. (It's been out for years, I assume the Spoiler effect has worn off).

Anyone in Heavy Rain. Suprisingly I even care about the characters I dislike.

Anyone in The Path. I know I tend to jump to that game for everything, but I love it.
