No one that played Suikoden 3 seemed to have liked Hugo, calling him a stereotypical inexperienced young hero that was unrelateable, but I thought he was a strong protagonist. He went through a lot and had a right to his angst and sure he was a stubborn/reckless character, but he was thrown from one kind of society into another.

Light Yagami from Death Note
Second. Although the first L, Ryuzaki, was better.

As for Raiden, I liked him, especially when he got the HF blade. It was rose I couldn't stand.

I've heard people disrespecting Olga from MGS2, and I thought she was effing great, the only character who seemed human. especially her last words: "Live. You have to " shot in the head.

Tails from Sonic adventure. As soon as they gave him an voice, I considered giving him a beating!

Sounded like you'd taken a small child out with you for the day and they're calling you back every 5 minutes to make sure you don't have fun.

I don't hate tails in the other games, just this one because of how whiny he is. I haven't played any of the sonic games POST Dreamcast (tbh).

Zelda in some the games is just plain artarded. She's not so useless and annoying in OOT and TP but the other few she's in, she's pretty useless. She just gets kidnapped whilst carrying out the most simplest of tasks, like showering, or going into the market and buying tampons.

Brucie. i didnt even know he was hated. i loved the character
"What are we about, boy" he has so many memorable quotes!
"Do you think my balls are funny"
"Fucking ALPHA"
"Were winners, man. FUCKING WINNERS"
"We should bomb this city. But a sexy bomb, that only affects blondes, with tan and D.cups"
"Bitches, the Boss..."
I could go on, you know.

I thought Raiden from mgs was pretty cool, but everyone seem hate konami for not making mgs 2 entirely about snake. And I always thought rayman was a cool character, but many of my friends find him annoying for some reason.

Brucie is definitely a master of comic relief, it's FUCKING INTENSE!

The Arbiter and Elites in General.
Going by the games alone the Arbiter is definitely the best character (although I've stated before with the books it becomes Truth). Elites are among the most awesome aliens ever. I don't get why killing something makes people hate it.

Lots of people hate the Master Chief. I don't know why. Well, I do, but I think it's a stupid reason. "Not enough character" or "Steryotypical super-soldier". Well, I like being a steryotypical super soldier, and will continue to play the Halo series.

Oh, and I know it sounds like a stupid and nerdy argument, but if you read the Halo novels, you'll discover that the Chief is actually quite interesting. Just so you know...
Master Chief is hated???
Weird isn't it? I don't see why he gets more flak than Goron Freeman, at least the Chief talks.

Do they think that just because Gordon has a face, last name, and degree from MIT he is a better developed character?

I love Half-Life 2 by the way, don't misinterpret me.

Dude, the Jack and Rose stuff (though justified--if I am not mistaken in the game--) did not help the player like those two characters. As a matter of fact...I spent the next 20 minutes of game time killing Raiden until I could get the cuteness meter down.

Brucie and Manny from GTA IV.

Terrible characters. I hope they bring back Brucie in the inevitable GTA V just so he can fall down a well.

I liked Little Jacob, even though I had absolutely no idea what he was saying 95% of the time.
I feel bad for you guys, I am the whitest meat you can find.. And I knew everything he said. It was in the context clues. Badman though...

Jack Carver from Far Cry. Supposedly he isn't in FC2 because playtesters didn't find him memorable and interesting or something (when has that stopped game companies?). I don't think he was that bad.

Fargoth. Hating him started as a joke and then it got out of hand.

Jar Jar Binks. Okay, I didn't like him, but he's not the worst thing ever created.

Most people I know hated him because they couldn't understand what he was talking about. I had to translate for some of them when they played XD. .
You guys realise that GTA has a subtitle option right? Not knowing any serbian (whatever language that was) it helps immensely,it also helps with Jacob and Badman, for some reason its easier to understand what they say if you read it aloud.

e.g "fa di dreaded bredren" "I an' I wanna play some pool n' ting?"

As for my pick I liked makoto from enchanted arms even though most people hate him for being a complete stereotype of a gay person hes a great character. Especially as it doesn't say hes gay it says hes in love with Toya (a guy pretty much all the guys and girls in the game are in love with) and a "mans man" (actual quotes) neither of which suggest he is gay to me. Meaning the character is a dig not at the gay community but the people who hold that stereotype.

Raiden was originally a girl character which explains a lot really, his girlfriend on the other hand now she can get pretty annoying. As for other characters I can think of, cream and big in the sonic games since they have no purpose beyond filler, navi "hey! listen!" from ocarina of time and 90% of the voice actors in the dynasty warriors games.

Raiden from MGS2.
I think he's a pretty good character, I think if people just looked beyond the hair, and accepted that he's not Snake then we would be problem free.

On a further note about FF protagonists, I don't understand what's with the whole "they're all emo" thing. I can't really think of any of them as being whiny or anything.
If you look at Cloud (the main offender), he's actually a super soldier gone wrong who's trying to deal with that without really knowing what's happening to him, as well as dealing with a load of terrible events in his past. If anyone has a right to whine it's him, and he doesn't.
Then the next in line, Tidus. He is the most whiny of the lot but again he's got some good reasons. His mother died when he was young, he was neglected by his father, he's trapped 1000 years into the future, everyone seems to think he's either crazy or a heretic, or both. And then he discovers soom pretty shocking revelations later. Despite all the this he hardly ever gets upset about his whole situation, quite rarely whines and is actually pretty happy most of the time.
Finally the new target of hate, Vaan. This one I really don't understand. He's poor, as far as I can tell homeless, living in an oppressed country and gets caught up in a political situation which he doesn't understand at all. And yet he's the most upbeat protagonist in a FF game?!?!

So I fail to see how you can call them emo?
I agree wholeheartedly on both points especially on final fantasy protaganists it would seem that whenever a charachter shows any emotion other than rage & bloodlust people lable them as "emo" though I think the one who gets the worst flak for it is Squall and I've never been able to figure out why, the only thing I can think of is that he wears black.

As far as I'm concerned he is the anti emo for the simple fact he almost never vocally comlains about his feelings.
He just doesn't get on with people and wears black does that automatically make you emo?
I say no.

I think in the case of squall they are confusing "aloof" with "emo" as he is definately pulling the apathetic "whatever" look at the start of the game.
