Do you agree that cinema is on the out? Yes
And is gaming close to claiming the entertainment crown? Yes
Is it even right to compare the two? Not specific games/movies, but as a medium. Yes
Are Portal 2 and LA Noire as bloody marvellous as Charlie suggests? Wouldn't know, probably.
And is he right to suggest that 'challenging the mind instead of the thumbs' is 'richer' than finger-twitching Space Invaders-style? Yes
And is it actually a good thing that gaming is being pulled into the mainstream? Yes
I think gaming and TV are much better formats that cinema anyway. The writers have longer to tell the story and you can do them at home with friends.

[sub]Charlie. If you're not too busy we would like another episode of Gameswipe please :p[/sub]
Man... there's something about the way that guy writes that makes me want to physically assault him. The absurd overhyping of basically everything he writes about (either that, or he's genuinely shocked by pretty old technology despite being "a massive dweeb"), and paragraphs like this one
Consider two of the biggest video games of 2011 thus far. The first is Portal 2, a darkly humorous science fiction . . . what? Story? Puzzle? Game? "Experience" seems like the best word to use, even though typing that makes me feel like shoving my fist in my mouth to punch my brain from an unexpected angle. The game mechanics of Portal 2 are almost impossible to describe without diagrams
etc..

It reads like he thinks his readers are morons.

1: Yes, Cinema is unfortunately going down the drain, sure you still get the occasional bright spark but 60% of films today are marketed towards the frat boy demographic.
2: The two shouldn't be compared but more and more it seems they are trying to be like the other.
3: Can't speak for Portal 2 but just spent the last three dyas playing L.A. Noire - fucking amazing.
4: Of course, watch any Extra Credit videos and they confirm that games can teach people and not just be whizz bang shooty fun.
5: Not sure on this one, on one hand it allows games like L.A. Noire to be a reality but on the other, cinema was brought into the mainstream so far that it is now THE mainstream and look at it now. A wretched hive of sequels and remakes.

Must we really announce an apocalypse in every thread...

I see gaming going along side the movie industry quite nicely, and would actually love to see more overlaps like they used to do with C&C.
But I don't want either industry to kill the other because they are completely different and both very important.

Games have been topping the weak ass film industry for years in my mind. I will always take a quality game before I'll pick up a much cheaper quality movie.

I've actually found that I can't enjoy movies as much anymore because there are a lot of games which have really great storylines, characters, and presentation. Plus, a long movie lasts about 2 hours while a short game is (unless you count COD and Force Unleashed 2) at least 6-8 hours long.

But I don't think that games will take over anytime soon. Movies have been around longer, and there's more variety throughout the entire year of what you want to watch. Pretty much at any time, there's some kind of action movie, romance, comedy, drama, etc that is about to be released.
The main problem with video games is that usually you have about a zillion fps's coming out the entire time (and a lot of them tend to be bad) and if you want a decent RPG or Strategy game you have to wait for Fall or Winter.

Also, I don't think games like Heavy Rain and LA Noir are the right way to go for the gaming industry. Sure, they may have good story and presentation, but where's the interaction? I haven't played them, but I heard that the game takes control away from you so often you might as well be watching a movie.

But that's just my opinion.

And then they got Rebecca Mayes on instead because Yahtzee was busy?
I vaguely remembered a Yahtzee interview from a while back where he briefly discussed it, and I just did a search to find:

Yahtzee
"I've followed Charlie's work since he wrote for PC Zone, he could well be who first showed me the fun to be had in negative reviews. It's cheering to see how much success he's gained. He did contact me to put ZP on Gameswipe, but the copyright is owned by the Escapist and we couldn't work something out. Would still love to work with him on something, and I know he's a viewer. Hi Charlie."

Which is kinda sad, but I suppose it is understandable that the Escapist want to protect its own assets.

It's obvious that the man who was against video games was entirely too intoxicated by the good ol' Foxygen to have anything he said taken seriously. A debate is a formal presentation of arguments, not a carefully prearranged butchery of factual information and an exploitation of logical fallacies, to boot. FNC is as much to blame as the radio host for not moderating the debate or even rectifying the completely misleading statement made here.

Hooray for Charlie Brooker, I've been a long time fan of his. I loved his Gameswipe show, because it was pro-games without bein incredibly apologetic. It acknowledged that there are tastelessly violent video games and had people like Dara O'Brien complaining about stuff that gamers often complain about without feeling the need to constantly excuse them.

I won't say cinema is completely devoid of all prospect. Source Code was a really great movie.

But you'd be a fool to think that gaming wasn't clearly better than cinema. I mean, jut look at the metacritic ratings that seperate videogames and movies.

http://www.halolz.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/halolz-dot-com-movies-vs-videogames-reviewscores.jpg
I think that has more to do with the PR behind game reviewing (compared to movie reviewing) causing consumers to have different expectations, rather than intrinsic differences in quality between the two art forms.

Still, it's a nice graphic.
I think the scoring metacritic uses is a reflection on how often games get 90+ scores compared with other mediums. Also if I am sheling out £40/$60 for a game it better be fucking awesome.

Idiots are common. movies will always be more popular because of their general appeal.

I fail to see how and why there would exist signifigantl more PR for games than movies.
I didn't mean that there is more - I just meant that it's different. Lots of other posts have said it - it's all about getting the game a good review score, as PRs know the direct link between high scores and high sales. I don't think the same is true for movies.

I don't think Hollywood is on it's way out, declining yes, they are still making some good movies and right now it just seems like there a ton of horrible movies and sequels that shouldn't be.

I think gaming is getting closer and closer to it's crowning moment, with games like LA Noire it will get there.

Yes and no, yes they should be compared because their modus operandi is to entertain and give people a good time even though they are doing it through different mediums. But I also wanna say no because the video game industry is a little more hesitant to do new IPs than Hollywood, not all of it is good mind you, but Hollywood takes bigger chances, in my opinion.

I don't know I haven't played either yet, I'm broke, but from what I've read and from what videos I've seen of the games, I believe so. I'm going off of second hand knowledge, so I'm guessing here.

Maybe a little bit of both? I won't count sales because to me that's irrelevant, I will say that all games have some sort of strategy involved and makes the player think. Someone here mentioned Portal 2 and Mk, they both use that, with MK you have to know when to use certain moves against certain fighters, know your character's/enemy's strengths and weakness, and know the combos. Portal 2 is more obvious about it, but fighters, I think, are more concealed about this.

I believe so. That way more people will get involved and move the industry forward so companies can try new ideas and whatnot so they can take more risks, and show what the industry is really capable of.

Charlie Brooker is one of gaming's greatest champions. The Escapist should get an article from him. :)
Seconded. Charlie Brooker is awesome and the Escapist should consider getting him.
Charlie had his own show (You have been watching) and was co-presenting 10 o'clock live, that (unfortunately) puts him out of the Escapists league (and budget). Still would be awesome though ... . I did like how he said in the 10 o'clock live after the Royal Wedding how he stayed home during it playing Portal 2 ^_^
