I should just like to add a little bit of developmental psychology based on my own observations and having spent a lot of time with 'chavs' (I was going out with a a girl that would be called a chav these days, it was 'townie' where I was from back then, for the best part of 8 years) and other people on the bottom rung of the financial ladder.
You dont like walking through a council estate? Think what it would be like to actually live there. No escape, you cant run off home, you are home. There are a lot of predators out there, and they are good at what they do, they sense 'weakness' and prey on it. Not to mention alot of them hunt in packs, you're either with the pack or you're prey.
So to stop that you have to put on a mask and pretend your the same. Sometimes some clever fucker will manage to work their way through and see that you arent, you get fucked over and so you put your mask on even tighter. Eventually it gets to the point where you've been doing it so long you're not actually pretending anymore.
