Acceptable responses to chav insults are:

"Go away or I'll get my butler to crush you with my wallet"
"Cease this mindless effrontery before I buy your family"
"You have no prospect of success at any point in your pitiful life. Leave."

All of these should be succeeded by a small volley of spare change.
These just made me laugh so much. You sir have made my yesterday (it's too early in the morning now).

I might have to practice those against this guy.

I live near Newcastle so a he'll of a lot over here. Actually the term Chav is derived from the Geordie term Charva (sp?) which is what they go by here. There is actually a difference between Charvas and Wiggers as while they both try to emulate black culture Charvas are more dickish.

I'm in Cambridge U.K. so obviously there are a lot of chavs, we're only an hours drive from London.

What's interesting is that a good portion of the chavs are Polish.

I'm very curious to know if they adopted the chav culture when they moved here or if it's something that's already common in Poland.

Of course they don't talk to me except to hurl insults as I walk by,so I'll probably never know.

In the U.S. they tend to gather in the cities. I used to live in Chicago, and they were everywhere.

Overhear we call them "wannabe gangsters", or "posers" for short.

They are very, very annoying.

Someone tell me what a chav is, please. I live in a cultural isolation tank.
Your profile says you're American, so from my extensive knowledge of U.S. culture from watching lots of TV; you'd probably call them white-trash, wannabe gangster wiggers. Or, just scumbags for short.

I believe you lovely Americans (apologies, I dated an American once and she was gorgeous) have 'White Trash' which is similar to a female chav, or am I mistaken?
If chav means fat ex-prom queen who has nine kids who lives in a trailer park then yes.

Wannabe gangster wiggers: ????
Scumbags: Too broad a description.
White trash: Ooooh, them. They can be annoying.

"White trash" is actually a derogatory term for any poor Caucasian person in the US. It isn't gender-specific, and it doesn't necessarily imply violence, just a money-bereft outcast from society who happens to be white.

I described the typical chav to a few people in Australia when I was over there - they apparently call them "douchebags".
Douchebag is actually an international term (or at least I don't think it's specific to one country) describing someone (usually male) with way too much self-confidence. As in, being arrogant, annoying and obnoxious, but without malicious intent. The fact that they don't intend to be annoying doesn't make them any less so.

Scuts, scumbags, knackers, wackers, pavvies, wahs, skangers... we've lots of names for them in Ireland.
Knackers being the most common. They call chavs Norries in some places in Cork.

Well we have bogans here in Australia, but there are two types of bogans and only one of them comes close and even then they are not quite what you describe. But we do get the odd couple who are what you would call 'chavs'. But they are vary rare and don't really bother people.
