Chernobyl to become tourist attraction.

Yes you read the thread title right, Ukraine is planning to open the Chernobyl explosion site to tourists early 2011. Here's the link.

This seems like a really bad idea to me as the site is as far as I know still highly irradiated. It says in the article that they have experts developing routes that are medically safe to view the site on but any idiot or curious child could easly wander off the path and be exposed to radiation.

So what are your thoughts on this everyone?

As far as I've heard, the dose is not enough to do any real harm. You'd need to be there for weeks to get something not so good going on because of it.

I wonder how many flight equivalents a single trip to Chernobyl would be o.0 I have no idea how much we understand the actual damage of radiation exposure, how much is over the top fear, and how much we still havn't fully studied.

So yeah, would be interested (not just to see that CoD4 level in person >.>) but would be too afraided of them radiations :O

The rad levels aren't that dangerous in most places but caution is still advised.
And the people who are only interested cause of a game had this one lv there, you need to re-evaluate somethings in your life.

It's already been open to tourism for a while, but it's just gotten more poplar recently. Apparently, you need to sign an agreement that you will not sue the travel agency if there are any repercussions after visiting the place.


Oh and don't wear sandals, those are fucking deadly in a radioactive area.


If you do get radiation poisoning, take it like a man and pop some Radaway.

Anyone who would bring a child to Chernobyl probably shouldn't have (grand)children, to be fair.

Would be really interesting to see in my opinion. Based on the chills (and nightmares!) I got from visiting Auschwitz however I think Chernobyl/Pirpyat might be a tad too much, but would force myself to see it at least once.

Many parts of it aren't dangerous. However, people coming back to it would reverse the ecological development that's come there since humans abandoned it.

I know people who have gone on guided tours around Prypiat, most of whom are interested in Urbex, and it's something I plan on doing myself. There are areas of relative safety you can venture through (Excluding woodland, areas of buried material such as graphite or even fuel) but overall it's not going to cause you any harm if you are only visiting briefly and have a good guide.
