There was a stabbing outside my sixth form before I came but nothing even remotly violent has happened since, which is an achievment seeing as there are over 1000 people in my year. But I would have to agree with you that the year 7s were getting more and more cocky every year (dunno now I'm at sixth form).

Parents aren't allowed to punish their children any more, so children are turning into little shits that feel they are entitled to everything they want NOW and if they don't get it they'll cry to child services that mommy and daddy raised their voices.

Rough, I think kids are getting the crazies worse and worse.
Since we're talking about rough schools- Some kids found a dead body near my primary school. Drug overdose.
Fun place to grow up.

My father wasnt afraid to lift a hand to my hide if I needed it, it kept me in line and taught me the value of not doing stupid things.
My dad spanked me untill I was too old and then he'd just cuff me round the head, still doesn't make corporal punishment the answer. Before I started training I worked at a Pupil Referal Unit, the place kids with repeated expulsions end up, even then we had no issues with knives or weapons. Worst we had were a few issues with drugs and the odd fight. The fights were quickly resolved with some non-painful restraint.

People have been engaged in dumbassery such as stabbing eachother to death since the dawn of time. Kids are sharp, but they aren't exactly known for possessing towering wisdom and unshakable inhibitions.

It's hardly surprising to me to hear that this happened in a private school. They're oft run a bit understaffed because it saves money and they're under the radar enough to get away with it.

Someone got stabbed in the liver in our school once. Class was cancelled, the kid survived with no long-term affects to his health and sued the family for about £30,000. He had a bitching party to celebrate.

Year 9 was a crazy year.

This is why we need to bring back corporal punishment. Lil bastards would tow the line if the very real threat of being publicly flogged hung above their heads.
Seconded.
I've never understood how just a telling off is more effective than a good beating/whipping/caning.
I vote with you guys. Theres nothing wrong with a little corporal punishment.

I can't believe how society now regards smacking a child; theres nothing wrong with it if its done properly. Theres a big difference between the teacher giving the child the cane when he/she knows they're out of line and abuse.
I fourth this motion. Teach the little bastards some fear, this should keep their attitude in check and do away with that arrogance.

I don't recall any stabbings at my old school, so I guess we missed that "trend", although there was a small period of time when kids were smashing sharpners to get at the blades inside and slashing each others coats, so I guess we could have reached that stage had the headmaster not expelled a couple of kids for it.

I have not been to a school in many years, so I cannot speak of any changes in school stature or the such. The observation that children are becoming smaller is an optical illusion because you, yourself, are growing.

There was an incident a month ago where a young teen-year-old and his friend shot a female teen of roughly the same age on a busy intersection. Supposedly they were all friends and the reason for the subsequent murder was unknown. On a whim, I'm guessing.

Another incident, more recent, was of a child around the age of fourteen that shot his soon-to-be stepfather to death. He brought the gun to school and told his friends all about what he was planning to do. He even told his best friend to hide the gun in their locker in case someone 'told' and they did a search. No one had the common sense to bring it up to an adult or tell anyone. Later that day he shot and killed his stepfather in the head. His excuse was that this person was beating him and his mother, and that he had to protect his mother. But the mother had no freaking clue about this. The kid is being tried as an adult and seems surprised that he is in trouble and going to jail over this.

There have been repeated threats of school shootings or bombings in the area. None of it happened. On the news a few years ago a kid was shot by a gang outside of his school, in the parking lot. That set the news ablaze in a frenzy of melodrama and media panic. Now I hear that metal detectors are all the rage to prevent such things.

edit - edited in information on the stepfather shooting.

there were lots of fights at one of the schools I attended
usually devoted to something stupid
blood was shed, bones broken, little repercussion
some one shot bullets into the ceiling in the hallway before giving up the gun one time as well
I usually stayed out unless provoked.

One week last year, an ambulance would come to our school to take people to the hospital.

My high school was connected to the middle school, so we had to deal with them. The worst thing that happened was a few 8th grade girls overdosing on arthritis pain meds. Both schools were locked down shortly before school ended on a hot Friday afternoon. No one could leave even if they were able to drive. I'm glad that happened during my senior year so I wouldn't have to deal with those assholes.

I was bullied throughout Middle School for having long hair, I never had any urges to beat the shit out of anyone. Unfortunately their parents were the "My child wouldn't hurt a fly" type. Parents really need to stop believing that their children are so damn innocent, and stop with saying that self esteem is so important. That's just making them think that they don't have to do any real work, and that the world owes them for existing.

The worst I remember happened at my old school, it was the following year I graduated and our old Senior Co-oridinator recieved death threats graffitied all over the walls of the school. Lots of a damage later and indefinite leave due to stress for the co-ordinator, but I haven't heard of anything else like that happening.

Ass-hattery seems to be common with every year group in my school except for the year 7's.

Like yesterday, it was our photo day and every senoir had to wear the button up shirts'n'ties in accordance with the new school rules.
As me and a friend left the photographers, a pair of year 8 kids callled us fags for overdressing for the photos.
