What are your thoughts on this?

EDIT: Also remember that Chile is much more structurely sound than Haiti was.

I heard about the 8.8 earthquake. Hopefully the Hawaiians can get to safety if the Tsunami hits, they have more of a warning, but I hope for the best. Especially for Chile.

Holy fuck. Two massive quake in two months. Two separate snowstorms shut down the east coast. Glenn Beck is still on the air.

I think we have substantive proof that whoever is pulling the strings upstairs is a rage-a-holic.

What interests me, although obviously this is terrible and I feel awful for the poor Chileans, is that earthquake damage with all its splendour pales in comparison to disease. The Black Death killed half of Europe, taking almost 80% of the population of the Mediterranean nations with it. I wonder what's causing all the earthquakes right now? I guess they could be unrelated, but we should hope that is the case and that these aren't being triggered by something.

Hmm. I wonder if we're just going to get worse and bigger natural disasters, climaxing with zombies in 2012.

There is a few people from Hawaii on the Escapist and I think I saw one from Chile as well. Damn, nature just doesn't relent does it. I hope it the tsunami doesn't reach Hawaii.

First all of our celebrities die off, and now Mother Nature is throwing natural disasters at our third-world countries!

I see a trend. A wrathful, violent trend.

God help us all.

Cue R.E.M! Its the end of the world!

But in all seriousness-I do hope that the Tsunami will not reach its destination. Let us hope for the best.

Well, it's not just Hawaii which in danger. Almost every country around the Pacific have issued tsunami warnings (which is roughly 58. I think they said it in the news).

Already, the incident is said to be 1,000 more powerful than what struck Haiti.
Really? I was taught that the Richter Scale was exponential base-10 something or other increases. Basically a 6.0 is 10 times worse than a 5.0 and a 7.0 is 10 times worse than a 6.0 and so on. Wouldn't an 8.8 be around 70 or 80 times greater than a 7.0, not 1000?

Oh well, enough about math. I hope that the people of Chili recover from this and that Hawaii can brace itself well enough.

Each number up on the scale equals a tenfold increase in ground motion and 32 fold increase in energy released. So 1000 is about right.

Except the Richter scale isn't used any more.

The Moment Magnitude Scale [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_magnitude_scale] which is a logarithmic scale where from 7 to 9 the amount of ENERGY does go up 1000 fold (not quite in this case, the Mw is 8.8 not 9). However a logarithmic scale is used because of the nature of vibrations travelling through the ground 1000x more energy does not necessarily mean 1000x more destruction.

So in terms of "how bad", yeah, if Haiti was a 7 this was an 8.8, but the big issue is the infrastructure and how stable the country is to cope with the disaster.

That's horrible news.
Hopefully they'll get back on their feet. Two massive natural disasters so close together. It's a real shame.
