Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake, Tsunami headed towards Hawaii

What interests me, although obviously this is terrible and I feel awful for the poor Chileans, is that earthquake damage with all its splendour pales in comparison to disease. The Black Death killed half of Europe, taking almost 80% of the population of the Mediterranean nations with it. I wonder what's causing all the earthquakes right now? I guess they could be unrelated, but we should hope that is the case and that these aren't being triggered by something.

Well, it's not just Hawaii which in danger. Almost every country around the Pacific have issued tsunami warnings (which is roughly 58. I think they said it in the news).

Each number up on the scale equals a tenfold increase in ground motion and 32 fold increase in energy released. So 1000 is about right.

Except the Richter scale isn't used any more.

The Moment Magnitude Scale [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_magnitude_scale] which is a logarithmic scale where from 7 to 9 the amount of ENERGY does go up 1000 fold (not quite in this case, the Mw is 8.8 not 9). However a logarithmic scale is used because of the nature of vibrations travelling through the ground 1000x more energy does not necessarily mean 1000x more destruction.

So in terms of "how bad", yeah, if Haiti was a 7 this was an 8.8, but the big issue is the infrastructure and how stable the country is to cope with the disaster.
