Oh, eastern Asia, and your crazy, self destructive, socially degrading ideas of pride and nationalism, which more often than not crosses the border from xenophobia to racism...<.<

Hey, watch yourself, I take offence to the uncapitalised E.

wow. Riots. Riots everywhere.

Also, major respect to the guy throwing the tear-gas back at the police. He's got spirit.
Spirit is not a suitable substitute for blood or an intact cranium.

Tell that to the Tibetans who they invaded in 1956, the Indians who they attacked in 1962, the Russians who they attacked in 1969 and the Vietnamese who they attacked in 1979.

to the Chinese Tibet is part of China. it only existed as an independent state for 30 years of its entire history. "old maps" as i said before.

the rest were cold war border conflicts that resulted in next to no territorial change and directly led to the Sino-Soviet split and China becoming a US ally in the cold war. if you want to frame those as Chinese "imperialist" aggression you simply are making a mockery of far more complicated history involved.

and by my "logic" nothing. my or your supposed "logic" and your desire for the world to adhere to it while throwing around false equivalences doesn't shape the world. but the Chinese Confuciust view of China does shape their world and maybe just maybe you should find out what the hell that is before you go trying to label them the next overly simplistic "big bad" on the world stage simply because for your own world view to work you've got to have one.

this ? this a an argument about a rock in the sea akin to multitudes of others some of which almost certainly involve your own country ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_territorial_disputes ) and as such it doesn't particularly mark China down as anything.
Over the last 100 years, Chinese regimes have killed enough of their own citizens to make Hitler look like a small time player.
The Germans were motivated by long-standing cultural ideals and influences, too. That didn't in any way justify their actions, and it doesn't justify China's actions, either.
China is not the next big bad. They are a very old and well-established big bad.

I find it hard to believe this is happening in the 21st century. Why the hell would the whole of China lose its shit over a couple of little islands which they haven't owned for ages? I thought the human race was past the whole land-grabbing obsession. Empires are built through businesses now, not occupation of land. These kind of acts just look barbaric nowadays. Or perhaps this is just about the oil?

Then again I guess it wasn't so long ago that the whole Falklands War thing went down. Maybe we're not past this kind of things after all.
It's not about the islands themselves, per se, it's about the resources that are in the ocean shelf around the islands. This is, ultimately, about business. If Japan owns the islands, under the Truman Declaration, then no one else can harvest resources there. It's no different than why people care about the Middle East, or Alaska. The resources there are exceptionally valuable and worth a great deal to the people who can claim them.

What is it with Asian countries and hating each other so much? They're getting to be almost as bad as differing religious sects that will murder each other at the drop of a hat.
Because America has been known for being a peace loving country that trusts its fellow Europeans and Canadians and Mexicans, and Russians, and- oh wait.

It's all in the link. The cardboard sign says "CAR SMASHINGS AHEAD, JAPANESE CAR OWNERS SHOULD TURN BACK NOW", while the store sign reads "pattad firmly defends China's right to the Diaoyu Islands. / We will give a 15% discount to customers who yell THE DIAOYU ISLANDS BELONG TO CHINA! in the store / We will give a 20% discount to customers who yell JAPAN ALSO BELONGS TO CHINA!"

They've committed one of the classic blunders: Never get involved in a land war in Asia.

Ok, there's no way that all of this is just a considence, there has to be a connection between this and what's going on in the middle east, and I doubt that a movie did all of it.

Aside from the resources that can be gained from owning these islands (gas deposits and oil, I believe), the biggest motivation for this conflict is "face"... a concept many in the West have difficulty understanding.
Not really we've had wars with heavy routes in similar concepts to face, how it looks etc throughout our histories here in Europe. They are bubbling near the surface. Governments often continue with policies they know aren't working to avoid losing face.

We like to think we're better than this but the idea of going to war mainly to save face is still a real possibility here.

I wonder if you've had that moment, where you realize that everyone here knows what's going on, except you...<.<

Why? The reasons for rioting are mostly different.

The Chinese rioting are due to foreign encroachment onto what they feel is their territory by a hated enemy.

The Arabian and Persian Riots are mostly about their ow governments actions against them. (with a side show of being pissed off with a movie)

Quite... the riots are due to the fact that the Japanese made the purchase of formerly Chinese Islands, from a private company I believe... as petty as that sounds... But the Chinese really hate the Japanese...<.<
