The argument is flawed. And it's not even an issue of culture. First of all, Gal-games, Eroge, and AVNs are made by the japanese FOR the japanese. These products were not meant to be exported and sold to other countries. If people outside japan get hold of these materials, then it is not Japan's fault. If gamestores sell them stateside, who's at fault then? The developers who explicitly stated that the media is meant for use within Japan, or the distributors who imported said media?

What Japan does within its borders stay within their borders. Japan is country of discipline and honor. Despite the existence of these games, they are still morally upright, and can discern rights from wrongs. What we have here are self righteous feminists who target territories they have little understanding of. Women are not the only ones portrayed in hypothetical sexual harassment situations, ever heard of yaoi rape?

HAH. My two cents...
There sure are a lot of witty people here at The escapist...

A good modern example of Zenophobia in Japan is how all there video games servers are apart from the rest of the world
I won't go too much in depth on the stereotyped and misinformed dribble you wrote. I think most people here are intelligent/informed enough to recognize it's nature, but I must point out something:
The only AAA pay to play MMORPG out there to have worldwide servers (including an advanced autotranslator to make relationing between western gamers and japanese gamers easier) out there is Final Fantasy XI. A JAPANESE game with a full fledged Japanese community (and probably the best MMO experience I ever had) and run by a Japanese company.
It's successor (Final Fantasy XIV) will still have completely open worldwide and cross platform servers, completely debunking your theory.

Both the PSN and Xbox Live don't have separate Japanese servers. Games that have separate Japanese servers are normally NOT Japanese run, and have national servers in several other asian nations like Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea and so forth.

Misinformed post is misinformed.

Oh, and the term you're looking for would be "Xenophobia". Thanks :D

Now, if Japan's ability to properly prosecute and report incidents to the degree that America does, then yes, they have less crime.
Personally, I've never been to Japan, so I wouldn't know. However, it is something to consider.
Aren't you making a quite wild and unwarranted assumption here?
In Japan rape and sexual molestation is reported and punished just like anywhere else in the world, and since Nogami didn't provide data, let me tell you that their sexual crimes rate is twenty times lower than in the US. Do you really think that such an immense chasm could just be due to reporting differences?
Do you seriously think that, if such a reporting and prosecuting problem existed, the usually anti-japanese american media wouldn't dive on it like a flock of vultures instead of recurring to nitpicking on extremely niche, extremely old games?

Come on. A lil of realism wouldn't be bad.

When you consider the strong association many have with video games being a children's toy it's not hard to see that by the same hand people revile at video game violence, people revile at this sort of thing.

Yes, its stupid.

Then again, it sells. Is it the fault of a company making the game when people genuinely want to buy it? No.

Proper regulation is a must.

I love it when people try to bash an entire culture for something like porn. It's hilarious that CNN and women's rights groups think they will change anything in another country. Good job Nogami, I tip my hat to you. If someone has a fetish then let them have it, and as long as they aren't going out and raping people then I'm 100% ok with it.

CNN's response is of course going to be to release some hybrid of Jack Thompson and Michael Atkinson on the American public. It is pure evil.

Hes got a problem with his argument.

There are far fewer instances of rape in japan because the laws regarding rape are different. To simplify, no damage, no rape.

So as long as the rapist uses lube, no crime.
While that's a good point the letter still brings to light the fact that there are real problems with (sexual) violence within the US and that they have no real right to take the moral high ground with regard to potentially harmless adult media in other countries.

Mr. Nogami made a very good argument, and I am completely on his side.
but what in the hell is with the Japanese game developers? isn't this the same country that gave the world hentai porno? really sits strangely with me that the country that boasts the least amount of violent crime and rape is also the one that is famous for having young schoolgirls being sexually assaulted by octupi. more power to them for not forcing people to adhere to some rule or law about what is appropriate for their citizens, but at what point do people morally stand up and say "you know, we Japanese as a race would rather not be associated with everything that comes out of this country. maybe we should try and stop these things from being publicly accessible in the first place?"

or else I'm just getting to be an old fuddy-duddy in my advancing years.

There really is an element to people having a safe and relatively-speaking healthy release for the various fantasies they have which I think gets vastly underestimated by people. People can go to great length if they are starved of the psychological stimulations they desire.

Personally I find the game disgusting, BUT! if you want to play it, fine. I'm not going to, but if adults want to, then whatever. It is only a game. I doubt it is going to lead to someone raping someone in real life. I've never killed anyone, yet I play violent video games and listen to extreme death metal. In fact, I save lives. Games do not lead to real life problems, at least not in 99.99% of the population.
You're a paramedic?
Doctor?
Cop?

But on the topic of the game, I couldn't care less. As long as governments don't use this to create pointless and preposterous laws, bans and regulations, and people don't use this as a tool for crime sprees, I'm neutral on this one.
