Cola phones are too futuristic apparently.

Yeah have to say that they're holding back progress but its nothing new there were electric cars made AGES ago which just vanished over time.. its all about money really coke is cheaper than batteries so yeah too bad you lose :( would be awesome though just drinking a can of coke talking on the phone and being like "oops phones almost dead 2 secs" then just pouring some of your coke into the phone and bam you're done :D far more convenient :D

Such a shame....I would very much like to own a phone powered by cola. Think of the experimentation with other drinks. For example if cola can power the phone for a longer period of time than lithium batteries then what would happen if Red Bull or Monster were used?

So this got me thinking. Are companies actually holding back progress instead of helping it?
All the time.

A lot of companies buy up and sit on patents for years and years, other times its just wouldn't be profitable to produce certain tech even though it would greatly improve everyones quality of life.

Think about the cure for AIDS, is there actually any money in it? The citizens of African countries can barely afford simple drugs. No way in hell could the average African AIDS sufferer afford the price of an AIDs cure.

Besides drug companies make enough money treating western sufferers with the huge daily cocktails of drugs they need.

In business you only do something if it will turn a good profit within a reasonable timeframe. They're never interested in the technological progress of humanity.

They aren't evil for doing so, its just that the pursuit of pure profit is the only way they can continue to exist.
Or it could just be that absolutely no one knows how to cure a virus.

I'm tired of people thinking there isn't an AIDS cure because Africa is poor, there isn't an AIDS cure because we don't know how to make one.

Also, that phone looks awesome. This could really catch on because of the whole green movement. But on the flipside it will just further Coca Cola's plan for world domination...oh well

If it runs off Coke I'm sure it would run off Pepsi...

I'm obligated to call Nokia cowards for not making a prototype...

This is such a cool idea.
On the subject of buying new phones all the time, I have to regularly update my phone because they keep breaking, by being in my pocket when I fall over on a bender. I even buy the most basic bricks I can find cos I assume they're more hard wearing and I still get horrible cracks all over the screen. Does anyone know if you can get reinforced phones?

This is a good idea, but would it actually cost more money to buy enough coke to keep filling it up regularly than it would to just use a mains charger and its probably not much better for the environment than a normal phone, so it probably wouldn't catch on. Also, what happens if you spill coke on it while filling?

Well India was the only place I could find where that was a problem. You don't think your friend confused the two places? I just hate it when people confuse places. Oh well, call me a geography Nazi. ;)
It was my brother who told me, and he definatly said Africa, but he is no geography expert.
I also find it quite annoying when people have very little knowledge of the outside world due to their own laziness,I can be somewhat of a geography nazi myself.

Yes, of course they do.

If it's not (very) profitable in the next year-18 months companies are generally not interested in innovation. The exception seemingly being Apple, Steve Jobs seems to be willing to sink vast amounts of money into loss making products for years if he think it will fly eventually (see- Macs, Pixar, i-everything). Considering the success of Apple you think other companies would get it by now.

It's probably not some corporate conspiracy to hold back technology, just that it won't make money fast enough for Nokia.

So how long do the enzymes last? Will they biodegrade before a typical battery goes dead?
Well if there reducing Cola then that sucrose (common sugar) so it would be the enzyme Sucrase performing a dehydration reaction. Therefore the enzymes could last a long time as long as there kept within temperature and PH levels, most enzymes stop working because your body realises a inhibitor to stop production of what the enzyme digests.

I'd like to think that Coke isn't the only thing it would run off. If the idea takes off a substitute could be made, like some sort of complex sugar water or something.
Well the post said it ran of the sugar in the coke if that is true any diluted sugar solution should work as long as its not to acidic chances are she used coke for the display purpose because saying "Phone runs of sugar water" isnt a hard hitting as "Phone runs of coke"

Eugh...

You've just reminded me I need to do science revision.

OT: How can it be too futuristic if it was made now?

Purposely doing the wrong thing when you know it's wrong just for profit seems pretty evil to me.

I guess they do it for the money, and they have already designed different batteries that last just a little bit longer than the ones we use now. So, if they would sell tht kind of phone, they wouldn't be able to obtain money from all the designs they already have.

I don't think it is as simple as that. I've read about those sugar-power solutions first time months or a year ago and that's just a single news about a single student. I'm certain that Nokia has already got some development regarding this possibility. It sure would be a great invention. Hope it hits retail customers soon.
